In the past seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a lot of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.
Yet the problem, by almost any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.
That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said “distracted driving was still increasing, unfortunately.”
“Big change requires big ideas,” he said in a speech, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. To try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving.
An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York’s hands-free driving laws.
“We need something on the books that can change people’s behavior,” said Félix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state’s 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, “people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone.”
47. What is happening to road accidents now?
A. They are falling slowly. B. They are rising sharply.
C. They remain the same. D. They are controlled well.
48. According to the passage, what can the Textalyzer do at a crash scene?
A. Fix the drivers’ broken phones.
B. Record the drivers’ conversations.
C. Check the phone’s recent operating activities.
D. Connect the phone to the police system.
49. The phrase “on the books” in Félix W. Ortiz’s words most likely means ________.
A. written into official laws B. printed in a book
C. stored in a phone D. discussed in public
50. What can we infer from Mark Rosekind’s remark?
A. More people are driving than before.
B. Distracted driving is the only cause of accidents.
C. Public service campaigns are completely useless.
D. Existing measures haven’t reduced distracted driving.
51. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to design a new device for drivers.
B. The reasons why road accidents are rising.
C. Efforts to solve the problem of distracted driving.
D. The history of banning hand-held devices while driving.

Give yourself a test. Can you tell which way the wind is blowing, or count the wildflowers by your door? A sharp sense of awareness makes these questions easy to answer.
Most of us noticed far more keenly as children than we do as adults. Childhood days are full of fascination and wonder. Curiosity gave us a natural awareness of the world. But as we grow up, those sharp distinctions fade away, and we become numb (麻木的) to new stimulation (刺激) and ideas. Relearning to truly see the world around us is simple, though it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step to awaken our senses is to stop predicting what we will see or feel before it happens. This only blocks awareness. For example, on a chilly Rocky Mountains hike, my students complained about crossing a freezing stream, only to find it was a hot spring, yet they still claimed to have felt cold water at first.
Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, “A ruby-crowned kinglet” and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing. Additionally, the pressures of time and destinations distract us. Many hikers rush toward a distant campsite before dark, barely noticing the birds and scenery along the way, just too focused on reaching their goal.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. So, next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open up a new dimension to your life.
52. According to the passage, what is the first step to reawaken senses?
A. To practice observing new things daily.
B. To stop making predictions before experiences.
C. To break all the bad habits in daily life.
D. To focus on the destination when doing activities.
53. What can we infer from the students’ experience in the Rocky Mountains?
A. The stream was actually very cold.
B. Students are more sensitive to temperature changes.
C. Hiking in the mountains is always unpleasant.
D. Predicting feelings blocks true awareness.
54. Why do the bird watchers fail to learn about the bird’s behavior?
A. Because they are not interested in birds at all.
B. Because the field guide has no information about the bird’s actions.
C. Because their obsession with naming the bird distracts them from observing.
D. Because they have to leave quickly to reach their next destination.
55. Which of the following behaviors would the writer most likely support?
A. A walker pausing to listen to the sounds of leaves in the wind.
B. A photographer taking photos of wild flowers quickly.
C. A traveler rushing to a scenic spot to take photos quickly.
D. A hiker planning every step to reach the camp before sunset.
56. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain why adults lose their childhood curiosity.
B. To compare different ways of observing nature.
C. To encourage readers to rediscover awareness of the world.
D. To introduce the benefits of outdoor activities.

Environmental protection has become one of the most important and urgent topics globally as global warming, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss continue to threaten the planet’s ecological balance. Many people think that protecting the environment requires large-scale projects or government action, such as building renewable energy power plants or formulating environmental protection laws. But in fact, small daily acts of every individual can make a huge difference in slowing down environmental degradation.
First, reducing plastic use is a simple yet effective way. Instead of using single-use plastic bags and bottles, we can choose reusable alternatives like cloth bags for shopping and stainless-steel water bottles for daily drinking. This not only cuts down the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans but also reduces the pollution caused by plastic production and disposal, which releases harmful chemicals into the air and water.
Second, saving energy plays a vital role in reducing carbon footprints. Turning off lights and electronic devices when leaving rooms, using energy-saving bulbs that consume less electricity, and choosing public transportation, cycling, or carpooling instead of driving private cars alone can lower carbon emissions significantly, thus alleviating global warming.
Third, planting trees is beneficial to both the environment and humans. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, and release oxygen, improving air quality. They also provide habitats for wildlife, helping to protect biodiversity.
However, some people still ignore environmental protection due to laziness or lack of awareness. It is crucial for everyone to realize that environmental protection is not a burden but a shared responsibility. Only when everyone takes consistent action can we build a greener, healthier, and more sustainable planet for future generations.
Small Acts, Big Changes
Common Misunderstanding
People believe environmental protection needs large-scale projects or ____59____ action.
Effective Small Acts

My Views on Community Service for Students
Today, many schools encourage students to do community service. Some even include it in the comprehensive assessment of students.
Students often help the elderly, clean parks, guide at museums, or organize library books. This practice teaches them to care about others and their community. Besides, students can learn practical skills and gain valuable life experience outside the classroom.
However, there are also problems. If students do service only to get a good record, it may become a mere formality. It can also add more pressure to their study.
In my opinion, community service is important, which can help students develop a sense of social responsibility.
