三、阅读
第一节(共16小题;每小题2.5分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,并做每篇后面的题目。从四个选项中,选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案。
A
William Butler Yeats was born into a wealthy, artistic Irish family in Dublin in 1865. It was his father’s career as an artist that took the family to London for four years during Yeats’ boyhood. His mother was from Sligo. It was she who introduced William to the Irish folktales which permeated (渗透)his early poetry. Yeats attended art school in Dublin, but he soon left to concentrate on poetry. It was apparent that his medium was not the brush but the pen. He first began writing poetry at the age of seventeen, and two short works were published in The Dublin University Review in 1885.
Yeats’s childhood and young manhood were spent between London, Sligo and Dublin, and each of these places contributed something to his poetic development. His devotion to Ireland was so intense that he returned to live in the wildest of its counties, to integrate himself with the problems of his own land, and express a life that had never been given full expression. From the countryside around Sligo he got something much more earthly — a knowledge of the life of the peasantry and of their folklore (民俗).
Heavily influenced by the works of Shelley, he wrote in a conventional fashion about what every seventeen-year-old boy worries about. But as he matured as a poet, he turned to the writings on the Irish folkloric subjects that he would become the most famous for. He explored history and community through a complex blend (融合)of landscape and fantasy that inspired the next generation of Modernist poets.
He learned to see his poetry as a contribution to a rejuvenated Irish culture. With the cooperation of a few others, Yeats helped to establish not only the Gaelic League but also the Irish Literary Theater. He also re-created folklore and perfected a poetry of music.
Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, and remains to this day one of Ireland’s best-selling and most recognized poetic figures.
31. What can be inferred about Yeats from the first paragraph?
A. He showed an interest in poetry. B. He was left out of the art school.
C. He majored in literature at college. D. He was homeschooled by his mother.
32. Why did Yeats return to the Irish countryside?
A. To get closer to nature. B. To gather writing materials.
C. To experience peasants’ life. D. To recall the days of his youth.
33. Yeats became best-known as a poet for the writing of ________.
A. his worries as a teenager B. Shelley’s influence on him
C. the Irish folklore subjects D. his desire for a fantasy world
34. What is the text mainly about?
A. An established Irish poet. B. The features of Irish folklore.
C. The rejuvenation of Irish poetry. D. A brief introduction to Irish literature.

In 1922 British geologist Robert Sherlock put forth what is now considered to be the central argument for recognizing the Anthropocene (人类世) as a new geological era: the scale and character of human activities have become so great as to compete with natural forces. About one hundred years later, geologists have broadly accepted Sherlock’s core idea, and the Anthropocene Working Group has proposed Crawford Lake in Canada as the official site for marking the Anthropocene.
The proposal attracted a great deal of press, much of it focused on a misguided controversy over how narrowly to define the Anthropocene. Amid this debate, observers may have been left to wonder why defining this chapter in Earth’s history should matter to ordinary people at all.
Sherlock was not a lone wolf. He built on the work of others. One was an American scholar George Marsh, who had called attention to deforestation and the role of humans as “disturbing agents”. In addition to revisiting deforestation, Sherlock described the changed courses of rivers through dams and canals; and the huge quantities of stuff people move while mining the raw materials of modern civilization. Human impacts were becoming so manifest, Sherlock argued, that the distinction between “natural” and “artificial” was becoming difficult to sustain. We needed a new term to study the effects of human activities on Earth. Scientists of later generations followed his footsteps. And in 2000 Eugene F. Stormer and Paul J. Crutzen formally proposed the word “Anthropocene” in a paper.
But science is conservative in nature — the burden of proof is always on those making a novel claim — and the social and economic consequences of recognizing the adverse effects of burning fossil fuels have led to enormous resistance beyond scientific community.
The definition of the Anthropocene matters for at least two reasons. First, it is a way for scientists to declare that the shifts going on around us are no small issue. Anthropogenic climate change is a profound change in the conditions of life on Earth. In countless ways, the past may no longer be a reliable guide to the future. We must rethink core assumptions about how we build our economies and our infrastructures, how we travel, and even how we eat.
Second, the definition of the Anthropocene extends the conversation beyond climate change. What geologists can now see in rocks — from the subtle to the gross — points to the widespread and lasting impact of human activities on Earth.
It is common for people to say that as climate change proceeds, we can “just adapt”. Some wealthy people even think that, if necessary, they will move to higher ground or lower latitudes. No doubt some people will become climate refugees, either voluntarily or under force. But the definition of the Anthropocene reminds us that the challenge we face is geological in scale. It affects the whole Earth. It reminds us that as this new era unfolds, there won’t be anywhere to hide.
35. What can we learn about the Anthropocene?
A. It is driven by dramatic climate change. B. It is approved as a definite geological era.
C. It highlights the impact of human activities. D. It marks the unique features of Crawford Lake.
36. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. A shift in mindset of responsibility is in great need.
B. Geological changes in rocks remain to be uncovered.
C. The proof of new claims makes science conservative.
D. The press focuses on the significance of the Anthropocene.
37. What does the word “manifest” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Direct. B. Diverse. C. Negative. D. Striking.
38. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Does the Anthropocene Matter? B. What Does the Anthropocene Tell Us?
C. Can Humans Adapt to the Anthropocene? D. How Can Humans Reduce Anthropogenic Impact?
C
Cities worldwide are witnessing a transformation in urban environments. Wildlife populations in cities are not only surviving but often surpassing those in rural areas. Urban bird populations in cities like Berlin have increased by over 40% in the past two decades. These aren’t just typical pigeons and sparrows, but hawks and owls, and even non-native species that have found urban environments surprisingly pleasant.
The urban heat island effect, often seen as a negative consequence of city development, creates micro climates many species find irresistible. Warmer temperatures extend growing seasons, provide frost-free zones, and create diverse micro habitats within a single city block. Urban environments also offer abundant food resource. Raccoon in Toronto have learned some techniques to open garbage cans. The constant availability of food waste and reduced animal hunters in nature create what ecologists call “urban ecological release.”
Urban wildlife’s boom (繁荣) not only reshapes ecosystems but brings health benefits to humans. Studies show people in areas with higher biodiversity experience lower rates of autoimmune diseases. Mental health benefits are equally impressive: urban residents who encounter wildlife report lower stress and improved mood. Yet this boom isn’t all positive. Urban animals are developing behaviour changes — increased aggression and interrupted migration routes. Disease spread is also critical as populations grow more crowded, threatening humans and animals alike.
Forward-thinking cities are pioneering architectural innovations. Green roofs in Copenhagen aren’t just for beauty — they’re functioning ecosystems supporting plants, insects, and birds, cutting energy costs by up to 30%while providing paths for wildlife to move. Wildlife bridges like Ecoduct de Woeste Hoeve let over 5,000 deer cross highways safely, reducing wildlife-vehicle accidents by 80%.
The future of urban wildlife coexistence is promising, driven by tech advances and public awareness — smart tech enables wildlife monitoring, and innovative designs create shared livable spaces. Emerging biotech may revolutionize management: genetic tools help study urban animal adaptation, aiding threatened species. The key is reimagining cities as integrated ecosystems. As urbanization grows, coexistence lessons grow more valuable. The question isn’t whether we can live alongside urban wildlife — it’s whether we dare to embrace the possibilities this partnership offers.
39. What can we know about urban wildlife from Paragraph 1?
A. They have grown in diversity. B. They are mainly from rural areas.
C. They have adapted to urban pollution. D. They tend to avoid human contact.
40. Why is “urban ecological release” mentioned?
A. To present a new ecological concept. B. To stress the constant city development.
C. To show the wildlife-friendliness of cities. D. To explain the reduced ecological harm.
41. What can the urban wildlife boom bring?
A. Lowered rates of disease spread. B. An improved sense of well-being.
C. Impressive migration routes of wildlife. D. Positive behavioural changes in wildlife.
42. What is crucial for urban wildlife coexistence?
A. A slower pace of urbanization. B. Adjustment to existing ecosystems.
C. Advanced biological technologies. D. An adaptive mindset of coexistence.

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。第1-3题每题答案不超过5词,第4题答案不超过20词。
In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others. Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, honking (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At that moment, I decided to do something I had never done in 24 years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to the other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.
47. What does the writer’s weakness bring out in people?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
48. How did drivers show understanding after seeing the flashlights?

49. Why does the writer oppose pretending to be strong?

50. What message does the author want to convey through his experience?

四、写作
第一节 概要写作(共1题;满分10分)
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main poin(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Noise-Cancelling Headphones: A Double-Edged Sword for Hearing?
They are prized for making the daily trip more bearable and creating a barrier against the noise of daily life. But some specialists suspect that overusing the noise-cancelling headphones which constantly blocking out background noise may have unintended consequences.
Renee Almeida, an adult audiology clinical lead at Imperial College healthcare NHS trust, has seen an increase in adults coming to her clinic with hearing issues only for tests to suggest their hearing is fine. The problem is with their brain, not their ears. They might fail to locate where a sound is coming from, or struggle to follow a conversation on the train, in a bar or at a restaurant. The condition, known as auditory processing disorder, is often diagnosed in children, so the rise in adults with similar issues struck Almeida as odd. Almeida suspects prolonged headphone use, which limits the brain’s exposure to multiple sounds, might be responsible.
“Normally, our brains sort thousands of sounds and prioritize important ones,” Almeida explains.” But noise-cancelling headphones deliver only one sound source — music or podcasts — depriving the brain of practice in distinguishing speech from background noise.”
However, for Harvey Dillon, a professor of auditory science at the University of Manchester, Almeida’s idea is an assumption yet to be tested.” There is no research investigating the link between the use of noise-cancelling headphones and reduced auditory processing ability,” he says. He cautions that loud music can damage neurons (神经元) in the auditory system. “It may be that listening to loud music is the cause of the auditory processing problem, not the noise-cancelling feature,” he says.” If so, noise cancelling could be a good feature, as it allows one to listen to music without interference from background noise.”
While theories about headphone-related harm remain unproven, experts agree on one point: understanding how modern listening habits reshape auditory processing requires urgent scientific attention.

【答案】
Recently, our School English Newsletter conducted a survey on what matters most when students choose their college majors. The results reveal that personal interest ranks first, with 46% of students placing it at the top, indicating a growing desire for self-realization. Meanwhile, 30% value advice from parents and teachers, showing continued respect for experience and guidance. By contrast, only 22% regard career prospects as the decisive factor, while other considerations play a minimal role.
In my view, personal interest deserves priority, for it fuels long-term motivation and sustained effort. Nevertheless, interest should not be pursued blindly. Only when passion is combined with a clear understanding of social needs and career realities can students make choices that are both meaningful and forward-looking. (121 words)
