“Dana, how are you feeling today?” I ask, my eyes clocking her dirty uniform and the dark circles under her eyes.
“OK,” Dana mumbles (嘟囔).
“Have you eaten today?”
She nods. Another lie.
“Can I get you anything?” But what could I possibly get her? A bedroom of her own? A family with love?
“No, thanks.”
Her repeated absence (缺席) from school recently has worn out teachers’ patience. But I don’t want to send her back to class. What use is it knowing all the square numbers and all the grammatical rules when she has to work out how to wash, cook and decide between feeding herself or her younger sister?
“A biscuit?” I offer. It works and Dana takes the biscuit I hand her.
I remember the first time I met Dana, the day after she locked herself in the house when her mum left the family. I remember thinking how young she was to have built such a high wall around herself and how on earth I could possibly break through. As a social worker, it is my job to knock down such walls no matter how hard.
I know it would take more than a biscuit to ease out one of her bricks. But I will try.
“How are you feeling?” I push slightly, hoping the biscuit might have softened her.
“OK,” she shrugs (耸肩). I’m about to change topics when her eyes rest on my arm.
“How does that feel, Mia?” Dana stares at me. The sleeve of my blouse has rolled up, evidence of how deep I had put it into the biscuit can. A deep scar along my arm is obvious against my fair skin.
I roll my sleeve back down, “It’s from a fire. It hurt. But everything will be OK when you think it’s OK.”
Dana pauses and picks up another biscuit. In that instant, I know something has changed in the room and we might actually be OK.
39. Why is Dana often absent from school?
A. Because she can’t sleep well.
B. Because her teachers are impatient.
C. Because she is going through a hard time with life.
D. Because she thinks going to school is meaningless.
40. What do we know about Mia?

B. Mia gains a better understanding of Dana.
C. Troubled teens require more care and support.
D. A strong connection is developing between Mia and Dana.
42. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. OK B. A high wall C. A white lie D. A deep scar

Research has found that teachers who sound strict are not as good at encouraging students in class as those who are kind. A new important psychological (心理学的) study from the University of Essex showed that “voices that sound controlling” didn’t make 10-16-year-olds cooperate (合作).
The study found that when kids had a strict teacher, they were more likely to fight against the teacher’s requests (请求). Their happiness was influenced, and they were less willing to talk about their problems—like being bullied. This is because students felt they couldn’t share their thoughts when the teacher used a more controlling tone. But a voice that sounds supportive made students feel connected to the teacher, and this made them more willing to cooperate.
People often think about what teachers say to their students but seldom talk about how they say it. But the tone of voice teachers use is really important and the way we adjust our voice can have great influences on listeners.
The study, which was published in the British Journal of Educational Psychology, explored teachers’ tone of voice in children’s education. Pre-recorded teachers’ voices were played to 250 children who were then asked to judge how the tone influenced them. They also judged how the tone would influence things like how good they thought they were, their feelings, and how much they trusted the teacher and whether they wanted to cooperate. Children reacted much better to supportive voices while controlling tones made them feel less good about themselves, and the teachers’ voices were seen as less trustworthy.
The research is hoped to influence teacher training and help improve classroom results. Future studies may head out of the lab and into schools to see where improvements can be made.
Professor Weinstein, Head of the Department of Psychology at Essex said: “Tone of voice is a powerful way to show teachers’ caring, understanding, or openness. It’s easy to forget when we are stressed or tired, but teachers can provide a positive learning environment when they are thoughtful in how they use their tone of voice.”
43. What seems to be the problem with strict-sounding teachers?
A. They can’t control their voices.
B. They never encourage their students.
C. They are less likely to encourage cooperation.
D. They don’t care about the happiness of children.
44. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. An introduction to the research process.
B. Supporting facts for the research results.
C. A question about the research methods.
D. Possible use of the research findings.
45. What is the importance of the study?
A. It improves teachers’ teaching results.
B. It explains where improvements can be made.
C. Further studies will be conducted in the schools.
D. Its finding can greatly help to train better teachers.
46. What does Professor Weinstein suggest teachers do?
A. They should show their emotions in a thoughtful way.
B. They should be careful about how they use their tone of voice.
C. They should make the classroom’s environment better directly.
D. They should keep working even when they feel stressed or tired.
D
Anyone can be late a handful of times, but being the one who’s always late—that’s an art, an annoying one. Or, a result of your personality, scientists have found.
So what makes some people keep missing trains, get to weddings just after the bride arrives, and often annoy their friends? And why is it so hard to fix? “There are all kinds of punishments for being late, but we still show up late even when those punishments and results exist,” said Justin Kruger, a social psychologist at New York University.
One of the most common reasons why people are often late is that they fail to correctly judge how long a task will take—this is called the planning fallacy. Studies show that on average, people underestimate (低估) the time to finish a task by a significant 40 percent.
Besides, forever-late-comers are more likely to be multitaskers. A 2023 study found that out of 181 subway workers in New York City, those who liked doing more than one task at a time were more often late for their job. This is because multitasking makes it harder to notice what you’re doing. Researchers also found a link between personality type and being late. Highly nervous people who care a lot about success (Type A) are more likely to be on time. But Type B people, who are calmer and more relaxed, are more likely to be late.
It’s true that knowing this might not help fix the problem. But scientists are starting to find ways to slowly make us more punctual (准时的). For people who always underestimate the time to finish a task, breaking down an activity into small, detailed steps can help them judge how long something will take more correctly. As for personality type, unluckily, you can’t change that much. But accepting that you need to try hard to be on time might help. After all, accepting the problem is the first step to change.
47. What does the underlined word “fallacy” mean in paragraph 3?
A. A mistaken belief.
B. A sound point of view.
C. A logical idea.
D. A reasonable expectation.
48. What is true about forever-late-comers?
A. They aim for more achievement.
B. They plan to spend longer time on a task.
C. They suffer from concentration difficulties.
D. They deal with more than one task at a time.
49. What is a possible way to help those who are always late?
A. Learning to accept who you are.
B. Changing your personality type.
C. Dividing a task into smaller ones.
D. Keeping to the timetable exactly.
50. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Accepting your personality helps you be on time.
B. The habit of being late is related to personality.
C. Managing time well helps people succeed.
D. Late comers should be seriously punished.

(1)描述 Jack 现状与自身过往经历:一般现在时(如 “You feel lonely”)和一般过去时(如 “I felt nervous too”);
(2)给出建议与展望未来:一般将来时(如 “You will make friends soon”)和情态动词(如 “You can join a club”)。
2. 语态选择:以主动语态为主(如 “You can start a conversation with your deskmate”),增强建议的直接性;表达理解时可使用被动语态(如 “Such feelings are totally normal”),使表述更客观温和。

I’m sorry to hear you’re having a hard time in your new high school. It’s completely normal to feel nervous when you face a new environment and miss old friends. I actually felt the same way when I first started high school, so I really understand how you’re feeling.
Here are some suggestions that might help. First, sign up for a club based on your hobbies. This way, you’ll meet people with similar interests, which makes it easier to start conversations. Second, don’t hesitate to talk to your classmates, especially those sitting next to you. A simple question like “Could you lend me a pen?” can be a great ice-breaker. Third, keep in touch with your old friends through video calls or messages. This can ease your loneliness while you’re in a new environment and find it challenging to make new friends.
Everything will get better soon. I believe you’ll adapt to the new school and make many friends.
