The shopper was an old woman. I couldn’t even begin to describe to you how sad this woman looked. I stood there for a second and quickly realized that the cashier was taking items off the bill to cut down the payment.
I walked quickly over to the cash register, pointed to the items that she was about to put behind her and then pointed at my bag, showing that I would pay for them. She understood. After putting those items back in the bag at the register, she again went to help the woman with her card, but it still didn’t work. I looked at the screen to see the number, took some cash out of my bag, handed it to the cashier and then quickly walked away.
The old woman was a bit nervous about her card and didn’t notice me at all. When the cashier told her that she didn’t have to pay a cent, she was confused(茫然的).
I didn’t walk back into the supermarket, but I felt so proud. I was really happy that I was able to help the old woman out and hopefully bring some joy and happiness into her life.

"Why do we have to do this tea ceremony every year? And why do you always say that drinking tea is part of your DNA?"Julie asked her mother.
"Well, the DNA thing is a figure of speech (比喻),"Julie's mother replied. She walked to the book hell, and pulled out a yellow and red book The Classic of Tea: Origins & Rituals(茶经:起源与仪式), written by Lu Yu."This book is all about how tea is grown, how the leaves are processed (处理), and things like that. I advise you read this instead of wasting your time with all that TV."
"I watch nothing but Tea TV," Julie joked.
"Right. Well, in the book, Yu describes the lea trees in South China. Back in those days, they would compress (压缩) tea leaves in to little cakes---not like a birthday cake, just a little brick of leaves. They'd add hot water to make the drink we know as tea, and the Chinese call…"
"Cha," Julie smiled. Cha was one of a few Chinese words Julie learnt. "Then what about the ceremonies?"
''Well, Chinese tea ceremony is not just drinking of tea, but a way for families to connect. It's also about peace and enjoyment.'

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare (野兔) and the tortoise (乌龟). In the end I said, "Son, remember: Be steady(镇定的), and that will help you win the race(比赛).Don't you think there's something to learn from the tortoise?"
Sonny opened his eyes wide, "Do you mean next time when I'm entering for the 60-metre race, I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?"
I was surprised, "But the tortoise didn't wish that the hare would fall asleep!"
"He must have wished that,"Sonny said. "Otherwise, how could he be so foolish(愚蠢的) to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran faster than he himself did."
"He didn't have such a wish," I insisted(坚持)."He won the race by perseverance(毅力), by pushing on steadily."
Sonny thought for a while. "That's a lie," he said. "He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn't happened to (碰巧) fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he'd never have won the race."
I gave up. Today's children are not like what we used to be.
64. Who were Billy, Tony and Sandy?

65. Why did the tortoise beat (打败) the hare in the race according to the passage?

【解析】
64. 由文中Sonny提到“next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race, I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway”可知,Billy、Tony和Sandy是Sonny参加60米比赛的对手,结合语境可判断他们是Sonny的同学。
65. 文中Sonny指出“If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race”,说明根据文章内容,乌龟打败兔子是因为兔子在比赛中睡觉了。
66. 作者一开始对Sonny说“Be steady, and that will help you win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”,结合后文作者强调的“perseverance(毅力)”,可知作者想让儿子学习保持镇定且永不放弃的品质。

Birds are amazing animals, and their most amazing skill is their sense of direction(方向). Some migrate(迁徙) from far away places. They know exactly where to fly, without a compass!
Migrating birds often fly thousands of kilometers. They find their way back to the same place year after year. Even young birds that have not migrated before seem to know which way to go.
