Children need to learn how to spend money smartly. Here are some tips from Dr. Mara Harvey, a money expert.
Learn to make money. Ask parents or neighbors if you can do chores to make pocket money. These could be washing a car or taking the dog for a walk. In this way, you can also improve (提高) your living skills.
Help your money grow. Money can’t grow if it’s in a piggy bank. Put your money in the bank and you can get interest (利息). Years later you may feel excited to know how much money you have.
Make a plan. If a holiday is coming and you need to spend more of your pocket money, try making a plan for spending and saving. Write down how much money you have and what you are spending on. Then it will help you manage your money.
Spend your money wisely. Spend your money on what you need. Then try to cut down on spending. For example, instead of (而不是) eating out, you can choose to cook at home.

At an early age, we start learning how to manage money by watching our parents’ spending habits. Don’t worry if we haven’t learned well how to save or spend money. The following life lessons about money can help us form good spending habits.
Money doesn’t grow on trees. As kids, we don’t often think about where money comes from. We need to know that our parents work hard to make money, and that it may be used up one day. Going to their workplaces to watch how they work is a great way to understand money is not that easy to make.
We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget (预算). In other words, we need to think about how much money we have and what we really want to spend it on. Realizing that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How? Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satisfy us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account (账户) is? If not, communicate with our parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
Without doubt, we should treat money in a right way. Actually, learning about money isn’t a hard job. From these lessons, we can get a sense of money management and right money values step by step!

It’s fun to buy a huge ice cream or to go shopping with friends, but saving money can be even more exciting, because it creates chances and opens the door to all kinds of adventures.
The key to saving successfully is setting a goal (目标). Get a pen and paper, and write down how much you can save each week and how soon you will reach your goal. Some weeks later, you might decide to save a little more than you planned so that you can reach your goals even faster.
To avoid accidentally spending your savings, just keep them separate from the rest of your money. For example, you could do this by using a money box or a savings account (账户).
When you save your money in a savings account, you can get interest (利息). This is the money paid to you by a bank when you keep money in an account there, and the longer you leave your money in a savings account, the more interest you can get.
If you’re new to saving, start off by thinking of some fun goals, like taking a holiday or going to a concert. Every penny you save brings you one step closer to reaching your goal—and what could be more exciting than that?

Long ago, people lived off wild animals, fruits and other plants and they didn’t need to use money. As time passed, people had more products than they needed, such as animals and crops, so they wanted to trade with others. They began to use money to make it convenient. However, it was not like the money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt or large stones.
During the 600s BC, people began using coins as money. Because they were easier to carry than goods. And countries began to make coins as their money.
The Chinese were the first to use paper money, as early as the 11th century. An Italian traveller, Marco Polo, saw the Chinese use paper money when he visited China in the 1200s. After his travel, he told the western people what he saw. But European countries started using paper money six centuries later than China.

Money makes the world go around, yet the best things in life are free. A penny saved is a penny earned, but you get what you pay for. You probably have your own ideas about spending money. Now is a great time to learn how to spend money wisely.
When you are considering buying something you want, run through this checklist first.
How much do you really want it?
Seeing a $25 gum ball (口香糖球) machine, Ben wanted it. But after thinking about it, he decided that it would be exciting only for a day or two. “Besides, it’s not possible for me to chew that much gum,” he said wisely.
Do you still want it a week later?
If the thing passes the “really wanting-it” test, try to wait for some time to see how strong the desire (欲望) is. This strategy works for grown-ups, too!
How will you pay for it?
After the first two steps, Ben found he really wanted a toy pirate ship (海盗船), but it cost $50. He had $22 in his pocket and gets $1.50 a week to spend. His mother helped him work out how many weeks he would need to save to get the ship: 19.
Are there ways to earn the money?
Ben agreed to wash the downstairs windows at a dollar each. So he got $10 for himself and sparkling (闪亮的) sunlight for the rest of the family.
Can you get it cheaper?
After deciding to buy it, it is necessary for you to look for less expensive ways to buy it: search for what you want on the internet or in shops and flea markets (跳蚤市场). Sometimes you can find the same thing at a much lower price. If these suggestions work well, they can save you a lot of money. You will be a really smart shopper.

How much pocket money do you get from your parents every month? What do you often do with your money?
We asked three British middle school students for their opinions on pocket money.
Ruth Sawyers:
I get 5 pounds every week from my parents. I usually save 1.5 pounds and spend the rest.
The two things I usually like to buy with my pocket money are story books and Lego Blocks (乐高). I don’t really think about getting more pocket money. And I even don’t talk about pocket money with my friends at school. If some people’s parents give them too much pocket money, other children might get jealous (嫉妒). It’s important not to show off what you’ve got.
Maya Varsani:
I get 6 pounds from my mum and 8 pounds from my dad every month. I try to save and buy presents for my family. Last year, I bought my mum a lipstick (口红) for Mother’s Day, which cost 9.5 pounds.
Jimmy Segalow:
My mum gives me 10 pounds a week. She says I can either spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she will make me a packed lunch, then I can spend the 10 pounds on whatever I want.
I like Nike trainers. If they cost 50 pounds and I only have 40 pounds, my mum might give me an extra (额外的) 10 pounds. But I have to do some housework instead.
I know that some parents can’t afford to give their children much pocket money. So I try not to talk about my pocket money at school.

I am Peter. My elder brother is Hywel. Last year, our dad gave us $300 each, “Well, it’s not your pocket money,” he said. “Don’t spend it on sweets or anything like that. You should try to make more money with that $300. And before you have the money, you should tell me and your mom what you’re going to do with it.”
Hywel moved first with a good idea. He bought some drones (无人机) and resold them online. He invested (投资) the full $300. Within six months, he made a profit (利润) of $260—that’s a lot of money.
“I also spent some of my profit,” Hywel admitted (承认), smiling from ear to ear. “I like both investing and spending! I bought clothes and stuff for myself!”
What should I do? I thought it would be a good idea to follow the example of a winner. I first invested $100 of my money in my brother’s drone business. Of course, he could keep a small part of my profit. “But I’m best at money,” I remembered telling my dad. Therefore, I made plans to invest the rest in currencies (货币). I’m not going to tell you any more, because how I made money is a top secret.
Dad has been teaching us important financial lessons ever since. He always tells us, “it’s really important to learn how to manage your money, or your money ends up managing you.” But it’s not something that we can learn at school. The news says that a quarter of young people in the U. K. leave secondary school (at around 16) without basic financial knowledge. I think we need to change that.

Today we have many ways to pay for things. We can use coins, paper money, cards and mobile phones. Some prefer to pay by mobile phone. That’s because paying with a mobile phone is easier and safer than carrying a lot of “real” money.
