Passage A
Animals can move from place to place, but plants cannot. When an animal is in danger, it can run away or fight back. Plants certainly cannot run away, and they have no teeth or feet. However, plants can still protect themselves in both physical and chemical ways.
Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of hollies (冬青树) have sharp prickles (刺) that discourage herbivores (食草动物). The leaves on lower places have more prickles than leaves on upper places. This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach.
Some plants, such as oak trees, have thick and hard leaves that are difficult for animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material, so eating such grasses wears down the animals’ teeth.
Many plants also have chemical materials. Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant feeling. Some plants may protect themselves by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a worm bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical smell.
Many plants depend on both physical and chemical ways. A kind of plant in China, for instance, has prickly leaves, and each prickle has poisonous water. Only one experience with this kind of plant will teach an animal to stay away from it in the future.

On a sunny Saturday morning, Mia was in her backyard with a bright smile. Today was perfect for trying out her latest invention — the Flower Watering Robot. She was excited to see if it could really water the garden by itself. She turned the robot on and watched as it started moving among the flowers. It was working!
Just then, a group of kids from her school walked by and saw her invention. Frank, the tallest among them, stepped forward and turned the robot off.
“What is this?” he asked.
“It’s my Flower Watering Robot. It helps water plants by itself,” Mia explained.
The kids laughed “Who needs a robot to water plants?” Frank picked up the robot and set it aside rudely before they all walked away.
Mia felt sad as she picked up her robot. “Maybe Frank is right ... Who would really use this?” she wondered, feeling discouraged (沮丧的).
Suddenly she heard a voice. “Hey, are you okay?” It was Mr. Jackson, her neighbor. He noticed the robot and asked, “What’s this interesting thing?”
Mia brightened up a bit. “It’s my Flower Watering Robot. I built it myself to help with gardening ...”
Mr. Jackson was amazed. “That’s amazing! You’re so creative. Don’t let those kids get you down. Keep inventing, and you’ll make something wonderful!”
“And guess what? I run a local science fair (展览会),” he continued. “I think your robot is great. I can see it winning a prize!”

Working as a team is a good thing, but sometimes it may bring you some trouble. If people on your team are not good at communicating, you may often feel terrible. To create a successful team, good communication is the most necessary part for both team members and leaders. Here are some helpful suggestions.
Don’t criticize (批评) other people often. When your team members do something wrong, don’t criticize them often. You can help them find out reasons and then help them solve the problem. Criticizing your team members too often may make them keep away from you. As a result, you may feel lonely.
Think about other people’s ideas carefully. When someone tells you about his idea, you should think about it carefully, no matter how silly it may seem. This shows you are interested in his idea, and it can make him feel good.
Listen to other people actively. When someone is speaking to you, you need to listen to him actively. If you’re unclear about something, you should ask him about it. By doing this you can clear up your confusion (困惑) before moving on.
Share your ideas with other people. When you have a new idea, talk about it with your team members. This helps to improve the idea. Moreover, it also helps to improve the relationships between you and your team members.
