Everybody in this world is different from one another But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?
As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life.
Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage the finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great influence on the way we look after our money.
According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are the ant, the cricket and the snail.
•The ant — work first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.
•The cricket — fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people nearly have no savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.
•The snail — living under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take out big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take out big loans even though they are not sure if they can afford them. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.
1. According to the author ________.
A. we spend money because we have earned it
B. spending money is a wiser way to manage money
C. saving money is a good way to manage money
D. your way of managing money is a reflection of your value or belief
2. The crickets borrow money because ________.
A. they want to buy insurance B. they would like to enjoy everything now
C. they plan to invest for their own future D. they need to do something urgent
3. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To state that we are the same as animals.
B. To make fun of the three kinds of foolish people.
C. To make us understand our differences and manage our money better.
D. To make us understand we should spend our own money.
B
Life is pretty unpredictable. One can never know what is in store for them unless it is unexpectedly thrown at them. Some people are lost in sorrows and incapable of moving on while others learn from it and come out even stronger. Similar was the case with Jordan.
Since childhood, Jordan has been a dedicated sports enthusiast who never missed out on practices and rose quickly to excellence. Determined to pursue a sports career, he earned a Master’s degree in Biomechanics and began coaching at school. Unluckily, his professional career ended when he was at his peak. He was one of the strongest and most competitive players on his team, but an injury was all it took to bring him down. He suffered from a severe injury in his lower back, due to which he could never return to professional playing.
Instead of sitting back and going into an episode of shock and depression as most athletes do, Jordan made it an opportunity to grow in a new field. With his career being ended unexpectedly, he promised himself to educate athletes on moving properly and taking care of themselves. He would also push the body to physical and mental extremes. According to Jordan, “I have long thought a coach should be an expert in all aspects of life, and that is what I’ve set out to do.” He motivates his trainees to follow his motto, that is, “Do what you do... with all your might.”
Although this 35-year-old professional went through the phase of ending his career early, he is always driven by the passion for training and developing healthy life routines for youth athletes. He aims to help them grow and reach their potential to the fullest and do not repeat the same mistake he made that ended his career. With high-spirited individuals like Jordan, ambitious athletes have an excellent source to get inspiration from.
4. Why did Jordan end his career as a professional player?
A. He was determined to explore a new career. B. He made a promise to coach young athletes.
C. He was not enthusiastic about sports anymore. D. He was attacked by unexpected physical damage.
5. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Guiding young athletes. B. Recovering from the injury.
C. Ending his sports career. D. Returning to professional playing.
6. Which of the following can best describe Jordan?
A. Inspiring and tough. B. Professional and proud.
C. Talented and considerate. D. Ambitious and creative.
7. What life lessons can we learn from the passage?
A. Health is wealth. B. Prevention is better than cure.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. When one door closes, another opens.
C
When I zipped through elementary school way back in the 1950s, in English class we were encouraged to express ourselves through creative writing, public speaking or perhaps taking part in some form of drama. And as we shared our creativity we were improving our communication skills. The emphasis here was how best to convey our thoughts and talents as clearly as possible. Yet it seemed that all spoken word exercises were being taught only from the speaker’s point of view, with little or no time spent teaching the fine art of listening.
And that was a missed opportunity because young children are remarkable listeners. They take in words, ideas and speech patterns, quite often without our awareness. Yet somewhere along the way, we teach them to stop listening. Perhaps they would benefit from lessons in selective silence, concentration, while focusing on knowing how to process all incoming information. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, no such programs are offered.
We seem to allocate less time to actually listening to one another. There is no question that we are a nation of bad listeners. One reason might be the fact that we have become a much more visual society as result of exposure to television, the Internet and all manner of hand-held wireless devices. We tend to be more self-absorbed and primarily focused on hearing ourselves talk rather than listening to others.
I attended a small family gathering a few years ago and almost everyone except my 86-year-old aunt was constantly texting or checking email on their iPhone. It made me wonder why we had bothered get together in the first place as we were paying so little attention to one another. We could just as easily have had an online get-together.
Listening is indeed a rare and special talent. And one that takes a lot of practice. But once you have gotten comfortable with the technique, you might find your next tete-a-tete a whole lot more meaningful. Simply listening for nuances in conversation will provide so much more context and substance for the words you are hearing. Remember, in order to be interesting, you must first be interested. And in conversation, you are supposed to be listening, not waiting to talk.
8 What is the author’s attitude toward the English class in the 1950s?
A. Carefree. B. Tolerant. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
9. What might be a reason that makes us bad listeners according to the author?
A. We have less time to communicate. B. We have a sense of self-importance.
C. The rapid development of technology. D. The lack of care and understanding for others.
10. What can we learn about the author’s family gathering a few years ago?
A. His aunt wasn’t good at listening.
B. His aunt didn’t like attending family gatherings.
C. His family members were engaged in hot discussions.
D. His family members showed little interest in one another.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To lead discussions. B. To give suggestions.
C. To create expectations. D. To make comparisons.
D
Is there a link between social media and depression? Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health? It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspecting that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌) , screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed? Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression? It turns out there are several warnings.
12. Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram?
A. They lack contact with old friends. B. They can travel nowhere.
C. They don’t look perfect. D. They feel unbalanced.
13. Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned?
A. To comment. B. To prove. C. To suggest. D. To explore.
14. Which may agree with the findings of the study?
A. Depression is related to social media use.
B. Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
C. It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D. Social media contributes to physical health.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
A. How to reduce depression? B. Does social media cause depression?
C. Shall people reduce screen time? D. Why is it time to give up social media?

How to Boost Focus for Effective Studying
In an era filled with distractions — from phone notifications or social media to noisy classrooms or — staying focused while studying has become a major challenge for many students. ____16____ Here are some tips to help you stay concentrated and make your study time more productive.
Initially, create a dedicated study space. Having a specific area for studying, like a desk in your room or a quiet corner in the library, helps train your brain to associate that space with “work mode”. Ensure this area is well- lit, free of a mess, and has all your necessary materials at hand. ____17____
Next, use proven techniques to manage your time effectively. A popular time- management method, called Pomodoro Technique, involves working in short, focused bursts followed by short breaks. To put it into practice, start by setting a timer for 25 minutes, called a “Pomodoro”. ____18____ After that, take a5- minute break to relax and once you have completed four such Pomodoros, take a longer 15-30 minute break to rest your brain.
____19____ Many students think they can “save time” by doing multiple things at once, but the fact is far from this. Multitasking actually makes you less efficient and leads to lower- quality work. Our brains aren’t designed to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Instead, focus on one task at a time, and finish it before moving on to the next.
Finally, never underestimate the connection between physical health and mental focus. ____20____ Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise are not just good for your body — they are fundamental to maintaining sharp mental clarity. If you’re tired or hungry, it will be much harder to stay concentrated.
A. Then, work on the task till the time is up.
B. Furthermore, avoid doing several things at a time.
C. Focus is closely linked to your overall physical well- being.
D. Afterwards, set clear and achievable goals for each study session.
E. The good news is that it is a skill you can develop with practice.
F. Therefore, it is crucial to keep your study area tidy and well- organized.
G. The instant you sit down there, your brain will automatically start to shift into a focused state.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This Friday brought a mix of emotions—both excitement and disappointment — all because of a flyer from school. When I got home, Mum saw the flyer in my hand and asked, “What’s this?”
“A flyer for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can’t go.”
“Would you like to attend?”Mum asked. “You’ve always loved art.” Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier: “Tessa, you’re the real artist. My brother thought the roses I painted were rocket ships.” I sighed. Mum patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year.”
“Maybe,” I echoed. Then I told Mum I wanted to go outside to draw the Westons’ pine tree (松树). She nodded with an encouraging smile.
As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. I wished I felt a little bit braver. Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat tossed in a heavy storm when I was surrounded by strangers... By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp.
I began by drawing the pine tree’s strong and straight trunk, and then added the beautiful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently towards the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr. Weston speak up, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled, glancing up.
As I drew the needles to the branches, Mr. Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. Their roots grow out, not down—to get enough water and grow tall.
“You have a good eye, Tessa.”With these words, Mr. Weston nodded goodbye.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】His words made me pause and think. As I reflected on his wisdom, I realized that I had been burying my own roots too deep, suffocating my growth and potential, no matter how often I was told about my talent in drawing. I had always unknowingly turned a deaf ear, forgetting to spread my roots outward, to seek nourishment and reach for the sky. Encouraged by Mr. Weston’ s words, I decided to reassess my approach to life and started branching out .
The next Monday, I signed up for the camp. Once I was there, I discovered that I didn’t have to be like Emily, jumping into some unfamiliar faces around to prove I was a real artist. From landscapes to portraits, and water color to oil painting, each brushstroke on the canvas was proof and brought me a lot of attention I had never experienced before.
