Are you scared about moving up to senior high school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
You’re not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help
If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything, then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you’ve got an older brother or sister at the school, then ask them for advice. Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally. Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!
26. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A. Other students have to learn boating with you.
B. Other students have similar feelings to yours.
C. Other students will help you solve your problems.
D. Other students will teach you politeness and new rules.
27. The new students turn to teachers first when having problems because __________.
A. teachers won’t blame them as parents do B. teachers are good at helping solve problems
C. teachers are equal to every student D. parents are too busy to help them
28. How many of the followings are the author’s advice for a new senior high school student?
① keeping a homework diary ② keeping a copy of school timetable
③ getting yourself organized ④ going to classrooms half an hour before the classes
A. 2 B. 4 C. 1 D. 3
29. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. You must focus on dressing properly. B. You should go to bed early enough.
C. You may ask your older brother for advice. D. You can act in a natural way.
30. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell students the importance of learning.
B. To help new students to get used to life in senior high.
C. To make a difference when moving up to senior high.
D. To warn students not to ignore friendship in senior high.
B
Originally from a town in Michigan, my grandmother welcomed me to stay with my grandparents each summer during my early years.
I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond (关系) with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts (被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.
A few years ago, when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell (告别) to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st a birthday.
I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorfully pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow (枕头). It was small and hard. I moved it to the seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝) it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I had collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble.
What a wonderful birthday that was!

We have long been aware that living near major roads can be harmful to people, mainly because of prolonged exposure to air pollution. However, road traffic noise is also a widespread problem in cities whose impact on children’s health remains poorly understood. A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students.
The study included 3760 children between 6 and 11 years of age. To assess the possible impact of traffic noise on their cognitive (认知的) development, the researchers focused on two abilities that develop rapidly during preadolescence (青春期前) and are essential for learning and school attainment: attention and working memory.
The fieldwork for the study was carried out over a 12-month period in 2022 and 2023, during which the participants completed the cognitive tests four times. The aim of these tests was not only to assess their working memory and attention but also to study their evolution over time. Over the same period, noise measurements were taken in front of the 38 participating schools, as well as in the playground s and inside classrooms.
In the analysis of outdoor noise levels of schools, higher average noise levels and greater fluctuation (波动) in noise levels were both associated with poorer student performance on all tests. Inside the classroom, greater fluctuation in noise levels was also associated with slower progress over the course of the year on all cognitive tests. However, children exposed to higher average classroom noise levels over the course of the year performed worse than students in quieter classrooms only on the attention test, but not on the working memory test.
The researchers used the 2022 road traffic noise map of the city of Barcelona to estimate the average noise level at each participant’s home. In this case, however, no association was observed between residential noise and cognitive development.
“This could be because noise exposure at schools is more harmful as it affects concentration and learning processes,” commented Maria Forester. “On the other hand, although noise measurements were taken at the schools, noise levels at the children’s homes were estimated using a noise map that may be less accurate and, in any case, only reflected outdoor noise. This, too, may have influenced the results.”
36. What problem does Paragraph 1 highlight?
A. Negative effects of living in big cities.
B. The obstacle to improving working memory and attention.
C. The harm of air pollution to children’s health.
D. Impacts of traffic noise on children.
37. The word “evolution” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to __________.
A. progression B. transformation C. influence D. challenge
38. According to Paragraph 4, what can we learn from the research on noise levels and student performance?
A. Higher average outdoor noise levels only affect students’ attention test results.
B. Greater Indoor noise fluctuation has negative impacts on students’ cognitive progress.
C. Higher average classroom noise levels influence students’ working memory.
D. Lower outdoor noise fluctuation leads to poorer performance on all tests.
39. What is Maria Forester trying to explain in the last paragraph?
A. The major research directions of future studies.
B. The reasons for taking noise measurements at schools.
C. The factors influencing the findings of research on residential noise.
D. The effects of residential noise levels on children’s concentration.
40. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?
A. The Impact of Traffic Noise on Children’s Cognitive Development
B. A Study Comparing Noise Levels in Schools and Residential Areas
C. How Air Pollution and Noise Affect Students’ Learning Ability
D. Barcelona’s Efforts to Reduce Traffic Noise in Urban Areas

Chen Xingrong won five medals, including a gold, at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 8th National Special Olympics Games.
Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic (自闭的), his parents were worried. In 2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath under water, which greatly boosted his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions.
As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. To help the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding, he once organized about 500 people to watch an autism-themed film.
Thanks to his father’s endless efforts, Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food in the market in their neighborhood.

27. The new students turn to teachers first when having problems because __________.
A. teachers won’t blame them as parents do B. teachers are good at helping solve problems

【答案】36. D 37. A 38. B 39. C 40. A

This, too, may have influenced the results.’
故选A。

It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions.
