Middle-school aged children who use the Internet, social media or video games for more than an hour each day during the school week have significantly lower grades and test scores, according to a study at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
Researchers say the findings give parents and children a threshold for using entertainment-related technology-no more than one hour daily on school days and four hours a day on weekends.
“Interactive technology is widely used to improve children’s educational access and achievement,” said lead author Vivien. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, technology is important for remote learning. But there’s a growing concern that too much technology use, particularly for entertainment, may affect children’s educational development by holding them back from learning activities.”
In the research, about 10,000 first-year middle school students were surveyed and followed. Their average age was 13.5 years. The results showed that children who used the Internet for entertainment four or more hours daily were four times more likely to skip school than those who didn’t. Boys used interactive technology for entertainment more than girls. Boys also performed worse and showed lower school engagement levels than girls.
“Such findings are important, particularly in the recent online learning in countries throughout the world,” said Vivien. “In a learning environment mixed with the Internet, it is easy for children to move across educational and entertainment platforms during learning to other activities.”
Vivien said children in study who used a bit of technology experienced less boredom at school, potentially due to the positive effects of participation in social media for students’ relationship building and advancing children’s cognitive (认知的) development.
The findings suggest that parents place time limits on their children’s interactive technology use, and that parents and teachers should help children to develop effective time management and self-regulation skills to reduce their dependence on technology.
4. What’s the finding of the study?
A. The Internet is important for children’s learning.
B. More than an hour online a day hurts the learning.
C. School kids should keep away from the Internet.
D. Staying online does more harm to boys than girls.
5. What does the underlined word “threshold” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Punishment. B. Reward. C. Guideline. D. Target.
6. What conclusion did Vivien draw from the study?
A. Children under 13 should be kept from online. B. Schools have the duty to limit online lessons.
C. Online learning helps children manage time. D. A bit use of technology is helpful to children.
7. Where is this text most likely from?
A. An educational journal. B. An entertainment magazine.
C. A technology report. D. A tour guidebook.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to create things we need very quickly and easily using 3D printers. But can you imagine printing food?
Some scientists are trying to revolutionize the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will be as common as the microwave oven or blender.
Scientists say that it’ll be quite easy: you simply have to select a recipe and put the raw food “inks” into the printer. You can also modify the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient. For example, alternative ingredients(原料) such as proteins from algae, beetroot leaves and insects could be converted into tasty products.
Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite foods so that they would not have trouble in swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D food printing would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those from growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. Also, there are concerns about the nutritional value of printed food: is it really possible to be get the nutrients we need from food-based inks and gels(凝胶)?
What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pleasure of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.
8. Which of the following best describes 3D food printing?
A. Quick and popular. B. Easy and efficient.
C. Nutritious and tasty. D. Soft and convenient.
9. Why do some think that 3D food printing would be a disaster?
A. Traditional food would disappear.
B. Many people could lose their jobs.
C. It would affect the people’s health.
D. We could all eat the same food.
10. What can we infer from the passage?
A. 3D food printing will replace traditional cooking.
B. 3D printing food can treat dysphasia.
C. It would hurt our tradition of food culture.
D. 3D food printing would be a failure.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. 3D food “printing”: coming to the kitchen.
B. Can 3D printing create everything?
C. 3D printing food will be in fashion!
D. The disadvantage of 3D food printing.
D
Greenhouse gas emissions would rise if all farms in England and Wales went organic. Though the emissions of each farm would go down, much more food would have to be imported, as the amount they would produce would decrease greatly.
“The key message from my perspective is that you can’t really have your cake and eat it,” says Laurence Smith, now at the Royal Agricultural University in the UK, who was part of the team that ran the numbers. Smith is a supporter of organic farming and says “there are a lot of merits of the organic approach”, but his analysis shows that organic farming has downsides too.
Farming and changes in land use, such as cutting down forests, are responsible for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. That means reducing farming emissions and the land needed for farming is required to limit further global warming.
Smith and his colleagues found that emissions per unit of food are, on average, 20 per cent lower for organic crops and 4 per cent lower for organic animal products. However, organic harvests per hectare (公顷) are also lower on average. For wheat and barley, for instance, harvests are just half of those of conventional farms. This means 1. 5times as much land would be needed to grow the same amount of these foods.
The estimated increase in emissions varies greatly, depending on where the extra farmland comes from. If only half comes from turning grassland into farms, the increase could be as low as 20 per cent. If grassland that would otherwise have been reforested is turned into farmland, emissions could nearly double.
This doesn’t necessarily mean people should stop eating organic produce, says Smith. People might choose organic food for other reasons, such as to reduce their pesticide exposure (though contrary to popular belief, organic farmers do use pesticides) or for the sake of wildlife.
Going 100 per cent organic could also harm global biodiversity. The extra land used for farming would mean the land available for wildlife would be smaller and more fragmented (碎片化的) .
Smith says the best option may be to use some organic and conventional farming methods at the same time.
12. Why may greenhouse gas emissions increase if a country goes organic?
A. Organic farms take longer to build.
B. The agricultural output will increase greatly.
C. The emissions of each farm unit will increase.
D. Greater demand for imported food will be created.
13. What does the underlined word “merits” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Changes. B. Challenges. C. Advantages. D. Differences.
14. What did Smith and his colleagues find?
A. Organic harvests per unit are greater than traditional harvests.
B. Organic farming needs more farmland to feed a country.
C. Global warming could be brought under control.
D. Land was not used in a responsible way.
15. What is Smith’s proposal?
A. Stopping using pesticides. B. Eating less organic produce.
C. Going back to traditional farming. D. Adopting mixed farming methods.

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。.
It was a cool fall morning, and the sun was just starting to rise, casting a warm light to the quit neighborhood. For Alex, the high school junior with a deep passion for science, was filled with both excitement and nervousness. Today marked the final presentation of his science project, which he had been working on for months. The topic was renewable energy, and Alex had built a model of a solar-powered car. He hoped it would help him win the regional science fair.
Alex checked his bag one last time: notes, sides, and the model car. Just as he was about to leave, his younger brother Ax came into the room with big, sorry-looking eyes. In his hand, he held a broken piece of the car's solar panel. “I'm really sorry, Alex!” Ax said in a very quiet voice, his head down because he felt guilty. “I was just so curious. I wanted to see how it worked, and I didn't mean to break it.”
Alex's eyes opened wide in shock, and his heart felt like it dropped to the bottom of his stomach. The presentation was in a few hours, and there wasn't time to fix it. He thought about explaining what happened, but he was worried it would sound like an excuse and make him less likely to win. He could put a battery in the car and act like nothing was wrong. But when he thought about it, he felt uncomfortable. He was proud of being honest, and the idea of cheating, even a little bit, made him feel sick.
As he walked to school, his steps were slow and heavy. He thought about all the late-night hours he spent working at his work bench, how frustrated he was when the circuits didn't work, and how happy he was when the car finally moved using solar power. His dreams of winning the competition and being recognized for his hard work seemed to be going away. But then he remembered the talks at the dinner table a long time ago, when his parents told him how important it was to be honest, responsible, and keep trying. Their words kept playing in his mind. By the time he got to the school gates, a determined look was on his face. He knew exactly what he had to do.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Tom,
You wrote to ask for advice on how to get rid of your nervousness right before the Academic Proficiency Test. What you should keep in mind is that most students feel nervous like you. Just take it easy. Here are some suggestions which I think may be helpful.
First, you should be well prepared. The harder you study, the less nervous you will be. Besides, look on your nervousness as a positive thing which can give you the energy to take the Academic Proficiency Test in an emotive way. Last but not least, as the old saying goes, confidence is the first secret of success. So do have faith in yourself.
Hope these can benefit you. May you succeed in the test!
Yours,
Lihua
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Alex stood in front of the class and judges, feeling nervous. He took a deep breath and began his presentation. “Today, I'd like to talk about my project on a solar-powered car. However, before coming here, an accident happened. My little brother broke a part of the solar panel. I was so shocked and disappointed at first. But then I realized that honesty is more important than winning. So, what you see now is a damaged model. But the knowledge and effort behind it are real.” He then went on to explain the theory and his process of building the car. The audience listened attentively, some nodding in understanding.
Later that day, Alex received an email from the science fair organization. His heart raced as he opened it. To his surprise, he had won an honorary mention. The email praised his honesty and his in-depth understanding of the project. It said that although his model was damaged, his integrity and the quality of his work impressed the judges. Alex felt a rush of joy and relief. He knew that his decision to be honest was the right one. This experience not only taught him the value of honesty but also made him more determined to pursue his love for science.
