Mia’s New Balance
Mia was a Grade 8 student who loved studying. She spent almost all her time reading books or doing homework—even during breaks, she refused to play with classmates. “Good grades are the most important thing,” she always told herself.
One day, Mia suddenly felt dizzy in math class. Her teacher sent her to the school nurse. She said, “You’re tired because you don’t rest or exercise enough. Your body and mind need balance.” Mia didn’t take it seriously. She went back to studying as soon as she got home.
A week later, Mia had a big exam. She stayed up late the night before, memorizing formulas (公式) and writing notes. But during the exam, she couldn’t focus— her head hurt, and her hands shook. She made many silly mistakes. When the results came out, Mia’s score was much lower than expected. She felt sad and confused.
Her mom noticed her unhappiness and said gently, “Mia, studying hard is good, but not at the cost of your health. Why not try going for a walk or playing badminton with friends after finishing homework?” Mia decided to give it a try.
Every afternoon, she played basketball with her classmates for 30 minutes. She also started going to bed early and listening to soft music before sleep. Little by little, Mia felt more energetic. She could focus better on class, and her mood became brighter. In the next exam, she got a great grade—even better than before!

Giant pandas are the superstars of the animal world. Whenever a panda is born or falls ill, the whole world seems to take notice. Why? Yes, they are incredibly cute. But the bigger reason is that there are so few of them left. In the 1980s, their population dropped to just about 1,110 worldwide. But here is some good news: the number of giant pandas is growing. Today, there are about 2,000 pandas living in the wild in China. How has China achieved this? Let’s take a look.
Eating Well
Although pandas sometimes eat small animals or fish, bamboo is their favorite food. And they are big eaters! An adult panda needs 10 to 38 kilograms of bamboo every day. China set up its first panda reserve (保护区) more than 50 years ago. Now there are many more reserves. People plant plenty of bamboo there to make sure pandas have enough fresh food.
Gentle Care
Baby pandas are only about 15 cm long-about the size of a pencil! They are born blind and open their eyes only six to eight weeks after birth. Therefore, researchers carefully look after them in special centers. When the pandas are big and strong enough, researchers release (释放) them into the wild. But they try not to disturb (打扰) the lives of wild pandas. Sometimes, when getting close to wild pandas, researchers even wear panda costumes (扮演服).
Going Global
China has also welcomed international organizations to help study and protect pandas. The most famous visit was from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1979. Since the WWF’s logo (标志) is a panda, this has helped make pandas famous around the world. China also sends pandas to other countries as special “ambassadors (大使).” The fees that foreign zoos pay also support panda conservation (保护) work in China.
39.About how many giant pandas were living in the wild in China in the 1980s?
A.About 2,000. B.About 1,110.
C.About 1,979. D.About 1,980.

A.Small animals. B.Fish.
C.Bamboo. D.Fruits and leaves.
41.Why do researchers sometimes wear panda costumes when getting close to wild pandas?
A.To make the pandas laugh. B.To keep themselves warm.
C.To avoid disturbing the pandas’ natural life. D.To attract more tourists.
42.What is the main purpose of this article?
A.To explain why pandas are cute.
B.To describe how China feeds pandas.

It seems like everyone plays video games today. Kids play, parents play, even grandparents play. In fact, more than half of the families in the United States today play video games.
However, video games haven’t been around for a long time. People created the first computer game in 1958. At that time, few people had computers at their homes. Computer programmers (程序员), or people working on the computers in labs (实验室), made games for fun and to show off their skills.
Later, a programmer named Ralph Bear began to think about how to play video games at home. He created a home game console (游戏机) that let people play video games on TVs. After that, many people began designing home game consoles. In the late 1980s, handheld games also became popular.
As technology developed and more people had computers, the number of games grew. People played sports games, puzzle games (益智游戏) and role-playing games. Then people started playing games online. In online games, lots of people in different places could play a game together.
Besides having fun, people can also use video games in other ways. You may have played games that help you remember English words. Some games also help you learn maths or geography. Doctors can even use games to treat children with brain injuries (脑损伤).

根据“Mum always had a warm smile, but Dad always seemed cold. He was busy with his work every day.”
根据“I spent several weeks making a model ship.”
根据“Fix it Please!”
根据“You should be more careful.”
根据“I thought he didn’t care about my feelings at all.”
根据“I thought he didn’t care about my feelings at all.”
根据“Even when I grew up, I still remembered that heartbroken moment.”
根据“Several years ago…my son was making a model plane, he broke one of the wings.”
根据“…my son was making a model plane, he broke one of the wings.”
根据“Fix it yourself.”

Hi everyone! It’s my honor to stand here and share my story of becoming a better myself.
In the past, I often felt nervous about my looks and didn’t get on well with my classmates. Also, I failed to balance study and hobbies. To solve these problems, I started doing sports regularly, which made me healthier and more confident. I also had a heart-to-heart talk with my friends, and we understood each other better.
