On April 26, 2022, Italian traveler Vienna Cammarota set off from Venice. The 72-year-old then planned to go to China on foot. This meant she would travel about 22,000 kilometers and walk through 15 countries. The journey would be full of challenges, but she wasn’t afraid.
The traveler carried only a bag. “I also have a lot of interests with me,” she said. On August 29, 2024, she finally set foot on China’s land.
Cammarota’s trip was encouraged by Marco Polo. The Italian explorer traveled to China along the ancient Silk Road more than 700 years ago. For her, the journey was more than following Marco Polo’s footsteps. She wanted to see what China’s Belt and Road Initiative (“一带一路”倡议) had brought to the land. By sharing her experiences, she now hopes her travels will help people in the West see the true beauty of China.
Cammarota’s interest in China began more than 20 years ago. A Chinese student stayed in her home and told her a lot about the country’s rich cultural heritage (文化遗产).
Cammarota plans to spend two years in China. She will visit key stops along the ancient Silk Road: first Kashgar (喀什), Dunhuang, and then the historic city of Xi’an. After that she’ll visit Suzhou, the city described as the “Venice of the East” by Marco Polo. She plans to end her trip in Beijing to mark the 750th anniversary of Marco Polo’s arrival to China.
Cammarota calls herself an ambassador (大使) of cultural exchange and a modern-day Marco Polo. “I want people to know about the Silk Road,” she said. “I also want to send a message to women my age: It’s never too late to go for your dreams.”

Beep! Beep! Beep! Cody woke up. The alarm? It was Saturday! Then he remembered. It was their first day of training. Cody hurried to meet his friends at the park. He sat next to Michael, whose eyes were closed.
Ethan handed each of them a manual (使用手册). “Our first day of cross-country season is in two weeks. Make sure to read your running manual before that.”
Cody stared at the manual in his hands. “1001 Running Tips?”
“Who needs that many tips?” Michael asked.
“We do.” Ethan answered.
“Who made you our coach again?” Michael asked.
“Remember ‘rock, paper, scissors’?” Cody said. “Ethan won.”
Ethan went on. “OK, as I said, only two weeks to get ourselves in running shape.” Then, Ethan took out three heavy books and gave them each.
Michael raised his book. “Let me guess. You want us to read this too?”
“No.” Ethan placed a book on his own head. “Here’s our first exercise. Proper posture (姿势) is important.”
After walking around with books balanced on their heads, Cody said, “I think I’m warmed up. How about going for a run now?”
“Do you have enough energy?” Ethan asked. “Let’s have a little snack.”
After they ate them, Ethan asked, “Are you ready for push-ups?”
Cody watched a couple of guys from their school run past. “We’re trying out for cross-country. Don’t you think we should, uh, run?” he asked.
Ethan shook his head. “We have to think about our running form. For example, over striding (步幅过大) could cause much pain.”
“I don’t even know what that means,” Cody said.
Ethan smiled and pointed to the manual. “Check out number 12 of 1001 Training Tips.”
Michael begged. “Please, let’s just get going.”
“We still need sunscreen and to drink some water,” Ethan said.
When they’d all put on sunscreen and drunk some water, Cody said, “You’ve thought of everything, Ethan.”
“Yep. Let’s go,” Michael said, running in place.
“I’m not sure we’re ready,” said Ethan.
“We won’t know until we try,” Michael said.
“Ethan takes the lead,” said Cody.
“Good idea.” Ethan said.
Cody continued, “But I’ll decide when to start.”
Michael smiled widely. “Ready, set…”
“Wait,” said Ethan. “Do you think we need to…”
Cody clapped his hands. “Go!”

You sit in front of the TV to “watch just one programme”. Or you open TikTok for a quick scroll (滚动) through short videos…Well, you know how the story ends—you may spend hours on useless information. Then your brain becomes lazy and slow.
There’s a word for it. That’s “brain rot” and it was chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year. In fact, brain rot isn’t a new word. It first appeared in Henry David Thoreau’s book Walden more than a century ago. He thought that brain rot happened when people stopped being interested in learning new things or didn’t think deeply. From then on, “brain rot” was used.
In 2024, the use of “brain rot” increased by 230%. It shows people’s worry about social media scrolling. Today, you easily spend too much time on the screen. You’re fed a large amount of unimportant and unchallenging information according to what you’ve visited online. As a result, you hardly do things to boost your brain abilities. Over time, you may have brain rot.
Then, ________? Kids and teenagers’ brains are still growing. If they get too much screen time and have brain rot, they will have a lifetime of poorer thinking ability. “Kids are still learning how to focus, control their actions and manage their feelings,” says Leventhal, an expert in brain studies. “Brain rot might make it harder for them to learn these important skills.”
To avoid brain rot, you can start by controlling your screen time and connecting with people offline. Choose to watch or read useful information when you use social media. Also, try to develop hobbies, like playing table tennis and painting. There is a huge world out of your screen! Be the master of your own mind!
12. How does the writer start the text?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples. C. By describing pictures. D. By asking questions.
13 What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. study B. check C. learn D. improve
14. Which of the following can be put into ________ in Paragraph 4?
A. who is influenced most by brain rot? B. why are kids crazy about the screen?
C. how does brain rot happen in your daily life? D. what to do to avoid losing thinking abilities?
15. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the history of “brain rot”.
B. To share an experience of having “brain rot”.
C. To teach a new word in Oxford’s Word of the Year.
D. To ask people to reduce meaningless screen time.

Beep! Beep!

A. who is influenced most by brain rot? B. why are kids crazy about the screen?
C. how does brain rot happen in your daily life? D. what to do to avoid losing thinking abilities?
15 What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the history of “brain rot”.
B. To share an experience of having “brain rot”.
C. To teach a new word in Oxford’s Word of the Year.
D. To ask people to reduce meaningless screen time.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. D

This way, I can finish all my homework efficiently without staying up late. Second, I always take notes while doing homework. When I meet difficult points or new words, I write them down and review them later. It not only deepens my understanding but also builds a useful knowledge bank for exams.
