A. Siren GPS Mobile. B. First Aid by American Red Cross. C. Red Panic Button. D. Life360. B     For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.     Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. "I ask my parents whether something is nice or bad," Julian says.     Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.      Have you ever had to enter a parent's e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety measure is there because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent's permission. This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smart phones. The nature of the way kids get online has changed, FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said.     When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under "personal information" to include videos, photographs, and services that give users location.      COPPA doesn't cover everything that can go wrong online. That is why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.     "There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe," says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. "It's important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it can also be dangerous if you are not careful." he adds. 24.Julian's parents check his web use to make sure ______. A. he doesn't watch too many videos B. he doesn't play computer games C. he controls his online time D. he stays safe on the Internet 25.What's one of the changes with COPPA? A. It broadens the concept of personal information. B. It prevents users from making their location public. C. It covers everything that goes wrong online. D. It says no to any kind of advertising. 26.People often hold the wrong idea that ______. A. formal websites are always safe B. the Internet is becoming safer and safer C. COPPA can ensure their complete safety D. daily checks prevent future online problems 27.Why does the author write the passage? A. To ask parents to look out for their kids. B. To talk about online safety for children. C. To introduce a new law. D. To sell an online product. C Some of the benefits of social media are unquestionable, such as the abilities to quickly connect with long-lost friends and keep in touch with family members from afar. However, according to a study conducted by the photo-sharing app Flashgap, millennials(千禧一代)are so addicted to social media that their real-time relationships are affected. The results have been confirmed by later studies. The study found that 87% of millennials are so busy surfing the Internet that they have completely missed out on face-to-face conversations. 54% worry that they will be left out if they donˈt check the Internet quite often. And 76% of females check their social media accounts at least 10 times while socialising with their friends. A study conducted earlier shows that 42% of those who use social media admit to feeling jealous(妒忌的)when their blog posts donˈt receive as many “likes” as their friendsˈ. Posts and reactions to them can also make people feel less confident. Earlier this year, a number of millennials came together and discussed the influence of social media on their lives. Tedi Gilmartin, one of them, reported feeling really sad about her life because she saw her friends travelling and thought she should be doing that too. But for all the negative effects on peopleˈs emotional well-being and relationships, there are some benefits. Gesell, for one, found that visiting social media sites inspired him to lose weight. All in all, different people have different views about social media. Some think theyˈre able to communicate with more people now than ever. Others think even with emojis, posts cannot convey some subtle(微妙的)non-verbal clues that can be found in face-to-face conversations. These misunderstandings can lead to negative reactions and even the end of some relationships. There is obviously a healthy balance, but as social media takes over more and more of our lives, its more negative effects may appear. 28.Why does the author mention Flashgap at the beginning of the text? A. To promote a kind of social software. B. To prove the popularity of social media. C. To stress the importance of social media. D. To present social mediaˈs negative effects. 29.What does the author aim to show by the figures in paragraph 2? A. Females like surfing the Internet more than males. B. Social media is making millennials less social. C. Millennials keep track of news updates every day. D. Chatting online is more convenient than chatting face to face. 30.What effect of social media is stressed in paragraph 3? A. Leading to negative emotions and mind. B. Enabling people to forget upsetting things. C. Recording interesting stories during journeys. D. Causing misunderstandings between friends. 31.Whatˈs the authorˈs attitude towards social media? A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Uncertain. D Scientists have developed a virtual brain network that can predict the behavior of individual neurons(神经元) in a living brain. This model is based on the visual system of a fruit fly, allowing scientists to quickly test ideas on a computer before conducting time-consuming experiments with actual flies or other lab animals. Srinivas Turaga, a group leader at the Janelia Research Campus, part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute(HHMI), explained, "Now, we can begin with an assumption about how the fruit fly brain might function before taking experimental measurements." Published in the journal Nature, this research also suggests that energy-intensive artificial intelligence (AI) systems could consume significantly less power by adopting computational strategies found in living brains. The fruit fly brain, with only around 100,000 neurons, is "small and energy-efficient", according to study co-author Jakob Macke, a professor at the University of Tübingen. Despite its size, the fruit fly can perform a range of complex tasks, including flying, walking, detecting predators(捕食者), and mating. In contrast, modern AI systems often rely on computers with billions of transistors(晶体管) and consume as much energy as a small country. Benjamin Cowley, a computational neuroscientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, believes that borrowing computational methods from the fruit fly brain could make AI systems more power-efficient. This virtual brain network was made possible by more than a decade of research on the structure of the fruit fly brain, largely supported by HHMI. Using detailed maps of the brainˈs neurons and connections, the research team created a model imitating the fruit flyˈs visual system. The virtual network, composed of 64 types of neurons, analyzed video clips of different types of movement, and an AI system was used to study the neuron responses. This model accurately predicted the activity of neurons in both the virtual and real fruit fly brains, offering a valuable tool for both neuroscience and AI research. Future versions of the model could extend beyond the visual system to include more complex tasks. 32.What is the basis of the virtual brain network model? A. The human nervous system. B. The fruit flyˈs visual system. C. Lab animalsˈ behavior. D. An advanced AI system. 33.Why is the fruit fly brain described as energy-efficient? A. It controls visual processes. B. It uses billions of transistors. C. It functions without consuming energy. D. It performs complex tasks with fewer neurons. 34.What can AI learn from the fruit fly brain? A. Increasing AI energy consumption. B. Predicting AI responses. C. Making AI systems more efficient. D. Improving AI accuracy. 35.What can be inferred about the future of the model? A.
