Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s Campus Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent. Let your imagination run wild and post your thoughts below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you get ready in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom, and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then, it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d be ready for school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 8
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humanity has changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8

At a family dinner, my mother was trying to remember an actor’s name. I took out my smartphone, searched for the movie which she was talking about and found the answer: Benedict Cumberbatch. This series of events seemed completely natural to me. My mom, however, felt surprised. “How could you know that?” she asked.
Later, it got me thinking. Today, we are using modern technologies in so many different aspects(方面)of our lives. And I think we students have benefited greatly from new technologies. Students used to study in libraries with lots of books. Now, apart from school libraries, we have many online libraries. A simple search for your chosen study topic can produce huge numbers of resources.
Another area that has benefited from modern technologies is student-teacher communication. We still have the attention of our teachers while we are in class. However, we now have email and social media. We can also communicate with our teachers at home or while we are on the bus. In lecture halls, laptops(笔记本电脑)are already very common. Students today can have up-to-date learning materials.
And it’s not just in education that students are benefiting from the latest technologies. These days, we have smartphone apps to sell old textbooks, to find bargains(减价品)and to use car sharing. The list could go on and on.
Technologies are changing fast. Who knows what is coming next? We should be ready to take advantage of each innovation(创新)as it occurs.
4. What can be inferred from the mother’s surprise?
A. She didn’t know how to use a smartphone. B. She seldom uses technology in daily life.
C. She was familiar with the actor’s name. D. She didn’t expect technology to be so useful.
5. Why does the author mention student-teacher communication?
A. To show technology has improved education in many ways.
B. To prove teachers are more accessible than before.
C. To explain why laptops are popular in lecture halls.
D. To compare traditional and modern teaching methods.
6. What attitude does the author hold towards new technologies?
A. Careful. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Critical.
7. Which of the following can be inferred about the author?
A. He likes to read paper books in the library.
B. He often uses apps to make life more convenient.
C. He thinks technology will solve all study problems.
D. He communicates with teachers mainly through social media.

It was October 10, 2013. Torbjorn Pedersen left his job and family behind to set out on a long journey. The Dane (丹麦人) wanted to visit every country in the world. But to make the experience more “special”, he set himself a couple of rules. First, he would not take planes. Second, he would spend at least 24 hours in each nation. And he would not return home until he had achieved his goals.
Pedersen planned carefully but still found some small nations hard to get to. Among them was Equatorial Guinea, one of the world’s most difficult countries to get to. After four months and many failed efforts, Pedersen finally got his visa (签证). A stranger he had met once earlier happened to work in Equatorial Guinea. He showed Pedersen around the African country.
At first, Pedersen thought it would take four years to finish his journey, but the world had other plans. During his years on the road, he faced months-long visa delays (延误) in places like Syria. He suffered from malaria (疟疾) while in Ghana. And while crossing the Atlantic from Iceland to Canada, he was caught in a terrible storm.
On May 24, 2023, the “big day” finally arrived. After nearly ten years of travelling, Pedersen visited his final country, the Maldives. From start to finish, the traveller covered 223,000 miles. That’s about fifteen round-trip flights from Shanghai to New York.
But Pedersen says it’s not the numbers that matter the most. Instead, it’s the kindness of people. “I set out on this journey with a motto, ‘A stranger is a friend you’ve never met before,’” he says. “And I have been shown time and time again that this is true.”
8. What can we infer about Pedersen’s journey to Equatorial Guinea?
A. He got the visa easily. B. The stranger helped him out of kindness.
C. He spent less than 24 hours there. D. It was the first country he visited.
9. How much longer did Pedersen’s journey take than he had planned at first?
A. About four years. B. About six years. C. About eight years. D. About ten years.
10. What can we infer from the underlined sentence “the world had other plans” in Paragraph 3?
A. Pedersen failed to visit some small countries due to visa problems.
B. Pedersen’s journey was filled with unexpected challenges and delays.
C. Pedersen changed the original route to avoid the challenges on the road.
D. Pedersen’s original path was blocked and he had to find a new way to continue.
11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Pedersen will continue to travel around the world
B. Pedersen values human connections more than achievements
C. Most people supported Pedersen’s journey
D. Plane travel is the fastest way to visit all countries
D
Around the world, governments are trying to get rid of plastic straws and bags. More and more businesses are using paper products instead of plastic ones. A lot of people think paper is better than plastic, but paper is also bad for the environment.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation.
Secondly, the production of paper items requires more energy and water. About 10 per cent more energy and four times as much water are used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say we can use recycled paper to save energy and water. It seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand-new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environmentally friendly solution is to avoid single-use items altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
12. The underlined word “deforestation” in Paragraph 2 probably means “the act of ________”.
A. planting trees B. climbing trees C. protecting trees D. cutting down trees
13. Why does the author mention “recycled paper” in Paragraph 3?
A. To show it’s the best solution for environmental problems.
B. To prove that paper products are better than plastic ones.
C. To explain why paper production is harmful.
D. To argue against the idea that recycled paper can save energy and water.
14. What can be inferred about businesses that change to paper products?
A. They save money in the long run.
B. They care more about the environment than profits.
C. They may face higher costs.
D. They will attract more environmentally conscious customers.
15. Which of the following can best express the author’s attitude towards paper and plastic products?
A. Paper products are much better than plastic ones for the environment.
B. Plastic products are more harmful to the environment than paper ones.
C. Neither paper nor plastic products are good choices for the environment.
D. Both paper and plastic products are environmentally friendly in daily use.

Are Zoos Good or Bad?
Humans have been catching and displaying (展示) animals for thousands of years. The earliest known wild animal collections date back to ancient Egypt in 3500 B.C. These ancient Egyptian “zoos” were, however, built only to entertain the kings. They were not open to citizens. Modern zoos didn’t become a thing until the early 1800s. Today, zoos are one of the most visited tourist attractions worldwide. Almost every major city has a zoo. By visiting a zoo, you get to be up close and personal with some amazing animals.
Clearly, in terms of entertaining people, zoos are great. But their big goal is to educate the public about wildlife and what we can do to protect it. Zoos also help with scientific research. The word “zoo” is short for zoological garden. Zoology is the scientific study of animal biology and behaviour. Zoos work hard to save animals in danger. They can breed these animals in captivity (圈养) and then reintroduce (放归自然) them into the wild.
But zoos do have their problems. Not all zoos are created equal. While some are clean and well-staffed, others aren’t. Keeping animals captive can be terrible for their physical and psychological health. And while zoos have been trying to save animals in danger, this doesn’t always work out. For example, most large carnivores (食肉动物) that are bred in zoos die when sent back into the wild. It turns out that they haven’t learned how to take care of themselves. In recent years, many people have been against zoos. They think zoos shouldn’t exist at all.
41. Why were ancient Egyptian zoos built at first?

42. When did modern zoos become popular?
