Steve Mann’s lab at the University of Toronto shows what he loves most. There are old computers and other electronics (电器) in every corner. Boxes of books and tools reach almost to the top of the walls.
Mann chooses to keep his lab this way. “Since childhood, I’ve been interested in how things work,” he says. “I’ve always filled my space with all kinds of cool, techy things.”
In fact, Mann, now 63, has always had a sense of curiosity about technology. When he was four, his grandfather taught him to weld (焊接). Young Mann found that the small window of the helmet (头盔) made it hard to see. Mann kept this “problem” in mind for years. Finally, in 1993, he had an idea: HDR (High Dynamic Range), a technology that makes pictures clearer.
As a teenager, Mann helped at a workshop, and he built his first wearable computer, the WearComp. It worked. But weighing 36 kilograms, it was too heavy and hard to use.
Over time, Mann made it smaller, lighter and more useful. With HDR, he made the EyeTap. It might be the world’s first pair of smart glasses. And it fully solved the welding problem. Many people thought it was strange, but Mann was so proud that he wore it almost all the time.
Mann also created a smartwatch videophone. “A lot of what I do seems ahead of its time,” he says. “Most of my ideas come to me in dreams. Somehow, they walk into the future.”
3. What is Steve Mann’s lab at the University of Toronto like?
A. It is tidy and clean. B. It is small and dirty.
C. It is full of books and tools. D. It is filled with useless things.
4. Which of the following things solved Mann’s welding problem best?
A. The helmet. B. The EyeTap.
C. The WearComp. D. The smartwatch videophone.
5. What can we know about Mann from the passage?
A. He only works on things that others understand.
B. He does not really like technology or electronics.
C. He is careful, honest, and always making strange dreams.
D. He is curious, creative, and often thinks ahead of his time.

Last Friday, I took a crowded subway to work, feeling a little low. As the doors closed, a cheerful voice came from the train speaker (广播), “Good morning. Welcome to this train! Wish you a happy journey!” It was such a lovely voice that I looked up and caught the eye of another passenger.
I smiled, and the woman smiled back. Then we did something that people hardly do on a crowded subway—we started talking.
“Oh, I love this voice!” said my eye-contact (眼神交流) friend.
“Cheerful and warm!” I replied.
When I got off the train, I felt lighter. And the good feeling stayed with me all day.
What happened? Could the cheerful voice and the short talk with a stranger have changed my feelings? “Yes,” say researchers. In their research, Gillian Sandstrom and Elizabeth Dunn suggest that talking to people you don’t know well — people with “weak ties (联系)” — can make you happier.
To test this idea, they asked students to count how many times they talked with classmates in person. The students who had more face-to-face conversations — even small ones with people they never knew—said they felt happier.
Next, Sandstrom and Dunn asked students to write down all their social talks for three days. They used two notebooks: one for “strong-tie” talks and one for “weak-tie” talks. The results showed that people who had more “weak-tie” talks felt happier than others.
So, just say hello to the policeman on the corner, the kid with the cute dog, or the new neighbor. It might make you feel better than you expect.
6. How does the writer lead in the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By sharing an experience. B. By introducing an idea.
C. By asking some questions. D. By showing some numbers.
7. According to the passage, what did the researchers find about “weak-tie” talks?
A. “Weak-tie” talks made people more popular.
B. “Weak-tie” talks had no effect on people’s feelings.
C. People having more “weak-tie” talks became less friendly.
D. People having more “weak-tie” talks felt happier than others.
8. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Tips for Riding the Subway B. Research on Classroom Talks
C. A Day on the Crowded Subway D. Talking to A Stranger Made My Day

D
Floods happen when too much water covers the land. They often come from heavy rain, rivers that rise too high, or big waves from the sea. Floods are very dangerous—every year, many people lose their lives.
Floods also bring other problems. In 2024, more than 19 million people had to leave their homes because of floods. Floods can wash away roads, bridges, and schools. In 2023, floods in Slovenia made the country lose about 16% of the money it makes in a year. In the United States, floods cost billions of dollars every year. After a flood, clean food and drinking water are hard to find, and dirty water can make people sick.
Floods are happening more often than before. One reason is that the Earth is getting warmer. Warm air holds more water, so rain becomes heavier and storms become stronger. Also, very dry ground cannot absorb much water, so rain quickly fills streets and low places.
Another problem is rising sea levels. Higher seas mean worse floods near the coast (海岸). Big waves push more water onto the land. Scientists say that by 2100, very large floods may happen every year, not just once every 100 years.
So, what can we do? Early warning systems (系统) can tell people before floods come, so they have time to get to safe places. Sea walls can help stop floodwater. Some cities are becoming “sponge cities”—they build parks and special roads to take in rainwater. In some places, moving people away from flood areas may be the best choice.
Floods are a big challenge. But with good planning and teamwork, we can protect our homes and stay safe.
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What problems floods can bring.
B. How people leave their homes.
C. Why floods are happening more often.
D. When and where floods usually happen.
10. What does the underlined word “absorb” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. stop B. take in C. clean D. wash away
11. Why may moving away be the best choice for people in some places?
A. Because floods can happen there again and again.
B. Because those places are too far away from the sea.
C. Because more and more people want to live in big cities.
D. Because people there don’t want to build “sponge cities”.
A 10. B 11. A
第二段首句“Floods also bring other problems.” 故选A。
根据第三段“very dry ground cannot absorb much water, so rain quickly fills streets and low places.”
根据第五段“In some places, moving people away from flood areas may be the best choice.” 故选A。

Over time Mann made it smaller, lighter and more useful.
C
7. According to the passage what did the researchers find about “weak-tie” talks?
