Passage A
Over the last century, engineers all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China serves as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

Passage B
Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
21. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Words have a great effect on us.
B. Encouraging words give us confidence.
C Negative words may let us down.
D. Words will hurt us.
22. Why is there no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves?
A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves.
B. Talking to ourselves can have positive effect on us.
C. Talking to ourselves always gives us courage.
D It does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.
23. The “self-talk” helps us a lot except _________
A. motivate ourselves B. solve problems
C. calm ourselves down D. increase stress
24. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 3?
A. Make ourselves relaxed. B. Remind ourselves.
C. Praise ourselves. D. Give ourselves happiness.
25. What can we learn from the text?
A. We don’t need to care about what we will say.
B. Negative words may inspire us to make more progress.
C. It is better to think twice before talking to others.
D. People tend to remember friendly words.
Passage C
A dog’s superior sense of smell can be critical to finding survivors (幸存者) buried under fallen buildings. However, a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’re just as trainable as dogs,” she said. “Their size is an advantage because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”
At the moment, the rats are wearing backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment, and location trackers (追踪系统), and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris (模拟的废墟) sites. Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to those people buried in the ruins. “When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is,” Kean said. “We have the potential to speak to victims.”
Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually expand in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.
26. What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A. They are easier to train. B. They have a better sense of smell.
C. They are more flexible with a smaller size. D. They adapt to new environments more quickly.
27. What function is expected of the backpacks?
A. To guide rats to find survivors. B. To protect rats from being injured.
C. To provide some food for trapped people. D. To help rescuers communicate with victims.
28. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of training the rats. B. The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C. The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites. D. The importance of the research environment.
29. What will researchers plan to do next?
A. Use rats for rescue work on a large scale. B. Send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C. Conduct further study on disaster prevention. D. Develop the tracking technology to assist GEA.
30. What’s Dr. Kean’s attitude towards the project?
A. Uncaring. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
Passage D
As we know, in 2016, Shennongjia made it on to the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there are so many important places not yet on this list. So you might ask: why Shennongjia?
UNESCO awarded Shennongjia this status because it meets two criteria (标准) required by the list. It contains a naturally-balanced environment that allows the many and various species to live and prosper. It is also one of the rare locations in the world where scientists can observe in real time the ecological and biological processes that occur as the plants and animals develop and evolve.
For the first criterion, Shennongjia is obviously one of the most “complete” natural areas in the world. The region rises from about 400 metres to over 3,000 metres above sea level, giving it the name the “Roof of Central China”.
For the second criterion, we can see that Shennongjia has incredible biodiversity. Look at this slide. According to official statistics, over 3,000 plant species have been recorded there. This represents more than ten percent of China’s total floral richness.
It is a challenge to look after so many species. In winter, scientists brave heavy snow and freezing temperatures to supply food to the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. Thanks to their efforts, the monkey’s population has doubled since the 1980s. Their number reached over 1,300 in 2015 and continues to grow.
But the most impressive aspect of Shennongjia is the local people, who take things from nature without causing damage. I visited a local village which is known for its home-made honey. What is special about the honey is that it is produced by the earliest species of Chinese bee. All of this explains why Shennongjia earned—and deserves—its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as highlighting how understanding, awareness and hard work have contributed towards protecting a unique and wonderful part of our natural world.
31. Why is Shennongjia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List?
A. Because its forests stretch on and on like great green seas.
B. Because it is the legendary father of Chinese herbal medicine.
C. Because it satisfies the two criteria.
D. Because it has the mysterious creature called “Yeren”.
32. Shennongjia is also called the “_________”.
A. Roof of Central China B. Roof of Northern China
C. Roof of Eastern China D. Roof of Southern China
33. According to the passage, the number of the China’s total floral richness is ________.
A. over 3,000 B. below 3,000 C. over 30,000 D. below 30,000
34. How does the author think of the scientists in Shennongjia?
A. Patient B. Careful. C. Confident. D. Hard-working.
35. Why does the author mention the local people of Shennongjia?
A. Because they make natural honey.
B. Because they live and work in harmony with nature.
C. Because they like to eat honey.
D. Because they supply bees with honey.

21 What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Words have a great effect on us.
B. Encouraging words give us confidence.
C. Negative words may let us down.
D. Words will hurt us.
22. Why is there no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves?
A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves.
B. Talking to ourselves can have positive effect on us.
C. Talking to ourselves always gives us courage.
D. It does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.
23. The “self-talk” helps us a lot except _________
A. motivate ourselves B. solve problems
C. calm ourselves down D. increase stress
24. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 3?
A. Make ourselves relaxed. B. Remind ourselves.
C. Praise ourselves. D. Give ourselves happiness.
25. What can we learn from the text?
A. We don’t need to care about what we will say.
B. Negative words may inspire us to make more progress.
C. It is better to think twice before talking to others.
D. People tend to remember friendly words.
【答案】21. A 22. B 23. D 24. C 25. C

【答案】31. C 32. A 33. D 34. D 35. B

What’s more, I’ll take part in volunteer activities organized by the community to help those in need. I’ll also keep fit by jogging in the morning or doing simple fitness exercises every day.
How about your plan? Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
