B As one of modern biology’s most influential scientists, David Baltimore left an enduring scientific legacy in the era of molecular biology from its birth to the emergence of cellular engineering and genome (基因组) editing. Born in New York City in 1938, and raised in Great Neck, David traced the origins of his interest in biology to a particularly inspiring high school summer that his mother organized for him at the Jackson Laboratories (Bar Harbour, Maine). There, he first encountered Howard Temin, with whom David would later share the Nobel Prize. After earning his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1960, David dived into the emerging field of molecular biology, specifically concentrating on viral reproduction. David’s fascination with viral reproduction strategies led him to explore RNA tumor (肿瘤) viruses, which in turn laid the foundation for his groundbreaking discovery of the enzyme reverse transcriptase (RT). This breakthrough was announced in 1970 in a Nature article alongside Howard Temin’s report, which both reported RT copied RNA into DNA, a feature that defined the novel class of retroviruses. For his revolutionary discovery concerning “the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic material of the cell,” David shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine at the astonishingly tender age of 37. Beyond his scientific excellence, David was also an exceptional leader of scientific institutions. I, like many former trainees, can recount colorful stories of David’s wisdom, and influence. I vividly recall my interview for a position in David’s lab as a graduate student while David was already a towering scientific celebrity. As I entered his office, David rose from his desk and walked toward me with his hand outstretched. “Hello, I’m David Baltimore.” And we then engaged in a far-ranging conversation about life, science, and graduate school. While David warned me that his large lab would require considerable independence, his warmth and genuine interest convinced me that even rare moments with him would be enriching. I was so fortunate to visit David during his last days and receive his constructive and encouraging feedback from him, a scientist true to his lifelong role. 24. What excited David Baltimore’s interest in biology? A. A summer science camp during high school. B. The patient guidance from his mother at home. C. A discussion with Howard Temin at a conference. D. His chemistry studies during undergraduate years. 25. For what was David Baltimore awarded the Nobel Prize? A. His exploration of RNA tumor viruses. B. Inventing a new method of genome editing. C. His leadership in major research institutions. D. Discovering that RT copied RNA into DNA. 26. What was the author’s first impression of David Baltimore? A. Serious and distant. B. Hesitant and cautious. C. Learned and approachable. D. Authoritative and demanding. 27. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To memorize a great scientist. B. To stress cooperation in science. C. To announce a major achievement. D. To encourage youth to pursue a career. C You experience a sleepless night, and the next day you find yourself in a meeting, reaching for an answer to a question from your supervisor that you failed to hear. Or you’re driving home and realize that the exit you were supposed to take from the highway is 30 seconds behind you. They’re called “attentional failures,” and they’re far more likely to occur when we have insufficient sleep. And because of the inconvenience and embarrassment that result from these failures, our typical response to them is annoyance at how our brains fail to keep our attention. According to a recent study at MIT and Boston University, however, such annoyance is misguided. Far from being the result of our brain’s “neglect” in failing to keep us alert, the lapses (失效) of attention that we experience after a sleepless night are actually a sign that our brains are working hard to prevent damage that lost sleep — whether voluntary or otherwise — might bring about. Building on earlier research revealing that, while we sleep, the brain removes potentially harmful waste products that build up during the day with a rhythmical flow of cerebrospinal fluid (脑脊液), the study explored what happens to the waking brain when it is short of sleep. Twenty-six participants completed two sessions in which they performed sustained attention tasks: one after a full night of sleep, and the other after pulling an all-nighter. Surprisingly, immediately after each lapse began, a pulse of cerebrospinal fluid flowed outward from the brain, and just as the lapse ended, the process was reversed, and the fluid flowed back into the brain — a flow pattern that strongly resembled the cleaning process the brain undergoes while we are sleeping. The most obvious solution to attentional lapses due to sleep loss is, of course, to get more sleep. A growing body of research suggests numerous ways in which a good night’s sleep benefits the brain, so even if staying more alert during the day is our primary motivation for turning off the TV or computer and sliding under the covers, a secondary result of turning in early is a healthier brain, so prioritizing adequate sleep in our schedule is a win-win. 28. What may happen to people after a sleepless night? A. They are late for a meeting. B. They suffer a loss of hearing. C. They miss the intended highway exit. D. They fail to answer the supervisor’s question. 29. What is the reason for attentional failures after staying up late? A. Our brains fail to keep us alert. B. Our brains are trying to protect us. C. Sleep loss results in negative feelings. D. Harmful products build up in our brains. 30. What does the underlined word “was reversed” mean in paragraph 5? A. Paused for a while. B. Speeded up rapidly. C. Was repeated again. D. Changed in direction. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Attentional Failures: A Source of Annoyance. B. Sleep Loss: A Threat to Focus and Brain Health. C. Unable to Concentrate: A Protective Brain Mechanism. D. Cerebrospinal Fluid: A Key to Brain’s Nightly Cleaning. D Quantities of papers have been published on the cognitive advantages of multilingualism (多语言). Beyond the conversational doors it can open, multilingualism is supposed to improve “executive function”, a loose concept that includes the ability to ignore distractions, plan complex tasks and update beliefs as new information arrives. Most striking, numerous studies have even shown that bilinguals undergo a later onset of dementia (痴呆), perhaps of around four years, on average. But some of these studies have failed to reproduce, leaving experts wondering whether the effect is real. The good news is that it is never too late to start learning a new language, if you want your brain to benefit. A study from 2019 showed although a moderate amount of language learning in adults does not boost things like executive function, it does alleviate age-related decline. The biggest benefits seem to come to those who master their second languages fully. That is usually because they speak the two as natives, or at least have spoken them on a near-daily basis for a long time. A bit of university French does not, unfortunately, convey the same advantages as deep knowledge and long experience. Switching languages frequently in the course of a day or conversation may be particularly important. Studies of interpreters and translators have provided some of the strongest evidence for a bilingual advantage. For example, they are faster at repeatedly jumping back and forth between simple addition and subtraction problems than monolinguals, suggesting generally better cognitive control. Ellen Bialystok of York University, in Canada, the godmother of the field, has compared the cognitive protection bilingualism offers to the coverage of a piece of bread afforded by a slice of holey Swiss cheese. Doing other things that are good for the brain, such as exercise, is like piling the slices. Their holes occur in different places, and thus collectively offer greater protection. But all related studies take for granted the uncontroversial mental superpower that you get from language study: being able to talk to people you could not have spoken to, or understood, otherwise. Even if you cannot pick your parents and be fluent from babyhood, that should be more than enough reason to give it a go. 32. What is the most noticeable cognitive advantage of multilingualism? A. Opening doors to conversations. B. Improving powers of concentration. C. Delaying the beginning of dementia. D. Boosting information processing ability. 33. Why are interpreters and translators mentioned? A. To highlight the importance of learning more languages. B. To prove cognitive benefit of proficiency in bilingualism. C. To make a comparison between bilinguals and monolinguals. D. To suggest the direct link between math and language learning. 34. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Learning foreign languages gives full protection to cognition. B. Exercise can provide greater cognitive protection for the brain. C. The holes of bilingualism cannot be filled by any other practice. D. Bilingualism plus multiple activities relieves cognitive decline. 35. What is the author’s intention in writing the passage? A. To justify previous studies. B. To raise a controversial topic. C. To encourage people to learn languages. D. To speak highly of bilingualism. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Change for Good Life itself is changing. Your body seems solid, yet it is built on change. ____37____ What’s the most solid and stable part? Your bones, which are replaced every three months. Every other organ is also in a state of renewal and destruction. Your skin renews monthly, and stomach lining renews every five days. Change is unavoidable, yet we fear it. ____38____ How many times have people said to you in a critical way, “You’ve changed” Similarly, “changing your mind” is seen as a sign of weakness, although it could more properly be seen as evidence of strength. Ms. Woodall!” It was Saturday. My daughter and I were touring a model home in a new development where she and her husband had just purchased a lot. She was showing me something in the backyard— the kind of landscaping she was envisioning — when I heard that familiar call out my name. I turned around. Standing in the yard was a little boy, brown-haired and dusted with a fine layer of dirt. “William!” I cried in surprise. “What are you doing here?” “I’m helping my daddy lay sod (草皮),” he answered proudly, sticking his chest out. William’s father owned a lawn sodding company. Now that I looked around, I could see him in the yard next door, working hard. “I’m sure he appreciates that,” I said. “This is William,” I told my daughter. “One of my students. He’s a joy to have in class.” It was true. Little William was a delight. He adored plants and animals. And even though he struggled with his reading, he never once complained. There was a brightness he brought with him wherever he went. I’d never forget the day in class when another student was having trouble understanding the lesson. “Don’t worry,” William had told her, eyes wide and sincere. “Sometimes, second grade is really hard.” He was a gentle soul, wise beyond his years. “See you Monday, Ms. Woodall” he said, running to his father’s side. My daughter and I waved, but William stayed on my mind for the rest of the weekend. Back at school, William’s grades showed no sign of improvement. Until we studied the life cycle of plants, William excelled. I’d never seen him so invested in the classroom. As a class project, each child planted a sunflower seed in the garden. I did this every year, with varying results. Planting the seeds was exciting for many of the students, the growing part much less so. It took too long to see results from a daily watering, and most kids had little patience for it. They lost interest and forgot to care for their sunflowers-to-be. But not William. He planted 20 sunflower seeds with great care. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Every afternoon, William went to the garden. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ About a month into the summer vacation, I saw William’s beautiful sunflowers. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高三英语 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 How much is the shirt? Last week, students donated their used books and labeled them with reading notes. We set up a sharing corner in the library, where everyone could pick books for free. The activity was a big hit. It not only gave old books a new life but also promoted the joy of sharing knowledge. We all hope more such meaningful activities will be held. 第二节(满分25分) 【67题答案】 【答案】Possible version: Every afternoon, William went to the garden. These seeds, seemingly not much significant for other children became the center of his world for every tiny seed represented a promise of life waiting to unfold. With great patience and care, William observed the soil every day to see if there was sign of life and watered those seeds to give them enough moisture to awake. When tiny green shoots came out of soil one after another, William became more dedicated to caring for them, making sure they got plenty of sunshine and water. He would also remove the weeds that popped around them and applied organic fertilizer when necessary. As time moving on, the shoots grew taller and stronger. About a month into the summer vacation, I saw William’s beautiful sunflowers. Definitely, for William, caring for seeds was a rewarding experience. The sight of those blossoms was truly breathtaking. Growth didn’t happen overnight. It took time, effort and a lot of waiting. From a tiny seed to a fully-grown plant with flowers, it was a remarkable transformation. Every living thing had the potential to grow and blossom if given the right conditions and care. It was true of William — the joy to have and the angel to give brightness. Looking at those sunflowers all facing the sun, I saw the special seed planted inside William.
