At the end of the class, Ss will be able to:
1) understand the following new words and phrases: despite, factor, symbol(n.), major(adj), means(n.), classic, regard(n.), calligraphy, carve, specific, ups and downs, Chinese characters, global affairs.

3) have a good understanding of the development of Chinese writing system and the function of it.
4) learn the characteristics of the structure of the expository passage.

Part I Reading (33 minutes)
Pre-reading (5 minutes)
Activity 1: lead-in (4 minutes)
Teacher will present photos of Oracle Bone Inscriptions and ask students to identify them and talk about the characteristics of it. Teacher will show some ancient Chinese characters and students have a guess. Then students will watch a video of the evolution of the writing of “person” to lead in the topic: the development of Chinese writing.
Q1: Do you know the earliest Chinese characters?
Q2: What can you see on these animal bones and shells?
Q3: How did ancient people write them down these symbols?
Can you recognize these Chinese characters?
Q4: Do you know how they turned into today’s writing? Let’s watch the video together.
(Purpose: To arouse students’ interest in the development of Chinese characters and lead in the topic of the class. To be familiar with the topic vocabulary: Chinese character, symbol, bone, shell, carve, picture-based, ancient time)
Activity 2: Prediction (1 minute)
Look at the title and picture. Predict what the text will be.
Q1: What may be the topic of the passage?
(Purpose: To stimulate students’ curiosity and guide students to predict and to prepare for reading.)
While-reading (27 minutes)
Step 1: Skimming (6 minutes)
Activity 1: Read the text quickly to find the main idea of the passage. (2 minutes)
Q1: Is your prediction right?
Q2: So what’s the main idea of the passage after reading?
Suggested answer: This passage is about the development and function of the Chinese writing system.
(Purpose: To verify the prediction and get the main idea of the text by skimming.)
Activity 2: Divide the passage into 3 parts and find the main idea of each part. (4 minutes)
Part 1 (para.1) Topic introduction
Part 2 (para.2、3、4) The development of Chinese writing system
Part 3 (para.5、6) The function of written Chinese
(Purpose: To analyse the structure of the text and get the main idea of each part.)
Step 2: Scanning (21 minutes)
Activity 1: Read part 1 and finish the true or false questions. (4 minutes)
1. There are many rises and falls in the course of Chinese history.
2. Chinese civilization was lost for a short time because of natural disasters in ancient times.
3. Only Chinese writing system makes a great contribution to the inheritance of Chinese civilization.
(Purpose: To scan for detailed information and stress the central idea.)
Activity 2: Read part 2 and find out how the author developed this part. (8 minutes)
The author developed it in time order.
Q1: Could you scan para 2-4 and find out the time order?
(Purpose: To identify time phrases.)
Q2: What happened at each of these important times?
(Purpose: To train reading technique: scanning; understand the development of Chinese writing system)
Activity 3: Read part 3 and find the sentences showing the function of Chinese writing system. (9 minutes)

Activity 1: What kind of role does Chinese writing system play in making civilization continue all the way? (5 minutes)
Q1: Why is the function of connection is stressed so much?
Q2: Can you find all the expressions of “importance”?
Teacher will guide students to interpret these sentences to realize the central idea: importance.

Discuss with partners: Chinese will become an international language in the future? Are you for or against? Give your reasons.

Teacher will ask three pairs to show their ideas.
(Purpose: To communicate and cooperate with each other to build up the sense of national pride)
