Xenia Sidorenko, a Russian designer, now lives with her husband in their apartment on Changing Road, Shanghai. The couple moved into the apartment on the first day of 2023. “Although it is not very large, it’s quite convenient to live here. Nearby are gyms, an outdoor living area, supermarkets and more,” Sidorenko says.
Moving into the 35- square- meter apartment marks the couple’s choice for a more minimalist (极简派的) lifestyle. They have to choose each piece of furniture (家具) carefully to make sure it doesn’t take up too much space. The living, dining and working area, fitting into 16 square meters, requires every object to be useful.
Sidorenko is good at turning unused products into useful ones. “Protecting the environment is an important value I bring to everything I do. If I need to find a piece of furniture, I first consider searching in secondhand stores. Whether it’s a gift, a coat or anything else, I prefer things with a story to new ones,” she says.
For example, the dining table in front of the open kitchen used to be an old door. Sidorenko found it in a place filled with old things that were collected from around China. She adjusted the height of the table to make it suitable for standing working. “People would be surprised at how many old furniture pieces I collected. I fix them, repair them and give them a new life in my own way,” she says.
For Sidorenko, home is a place where she can feel safe and comfortable. She hopes the minimalist lifestyle can bring them more peace and freedom.
26. What does Sidorenko think of the new apartment?
A. It is old and large. B. It is a little crowded.
C. It’s in a convenient area. D. It’s in a very noisy area.
27. What factors will the couple consider when choosing furniture?
A. Size and Usefulness. B. Price and Quality. C. Material and Color. D. Style and Flexibility.
28. Why does Sidorenko prefer to buy old things?
A. She wants to save money. B. Her husband loves old things.
C. Most new things aren’t creative enough. D. She’s more interested in the stories behind them.
29. Sidorenko’s dining table was made from ________.
A. an old refrigerator B. an old door C. an old cupboard D. an old chair
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Live in Russia B. Use Secondhand Furniture
C. Have a Minimalist Life D. Protect Environment in a New Way

High-speed rail has been an effective means of travel for long journeys as it allows people to travel around easily and comfortably. The world’s fastest high-speed train is on the way. On December 29, China brought to light a prototype (雏形) of the train. It marks the new time for China’s high-speed rail.
The newest model is called the CR450. CR stands for China Railway. The CR450 is able to run at 450 kilometers per hour in tests. When it enters service, its speed is expected to reach 400kilometers per hour. It’s much faster than the CR400 model. The CR400 came out in 2017. It operates at 350 kilometers per hour.
The CR450 does well not just in speed. According to its developers, the train has shorter braking (刹车) distances. It is also designed with greater stability (稳定性). All these help to ensure the safety of passengers.
In addition, the CR450 offers a quieter ride. The noise levels inside the train have been reduced. Meanwhile, seat spaces have been increased so that passengers can enjoy more comfortable rides.
The new train has been tested across several high-speed rail lines in China. It is not yet ready for commercial (商业的) use though. Further tests are needed, said the China State Railway Group. All tests are set to be finished within two years.
China is now the world leader in railway development. It has built the world’s largest railway network. The network covers almost all corners of the country. The total length of rail lines has reached over 160 000 kilometers. More than 46 000 kilometers are high-speed rail lines. The aim is to have 60 000 kilometers of high-speed rail lines by 2030.
31. What does the underlined phrase “brought to light” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Changed. B. Criticized. C. Improved. D. Showed.
32. How does the writer describe the CR450 in Paragraph 2?
A. By showing statistics. B. By making comparisons.
C. By asking questions. D. By explaining reasons.
33. What else advantages does the CR450 have?
①Shorter braking distances. ②Better stability.
③A quieter rider. ④More comfortable seats. ⑤Lower price.
A. ①②③④ B. ①②③⑤ C. ①③④⑤ D. ②③④⑤
34. Why isn’t the CR450 in commercial use yet?
A. Because it is dangerous. B. Because it needs further tests.
C. Because it has less stability. D. Because it is designed purely for experimental purpose.
35. What will the writer probably discuss after the last paragraph?
A. The history of the CR450. B. The advantages of the CR450.

Dear editor,
There has been a heated discussion on the Spring Festival Gala among the public. Some people support holding the Spring Festival Gala, while others hold the opposite view.
Those in favor believe that the Gala is the most popular TV program during Spring Festival. What’s more, it brings families together on the couch, laughing and chatting while watching the show. Over the years, it has become a necessary tradition, just like Jiaozi or red envelopes.
Meanwhile, others take the huge cost on the Gala’s preparation into consideration. Besides, some feel that the recent Galas are not as wonderful as the earlier ones. They also point out that nowadays there are many other activities to choose from, such as fantastic programme, interesting apps, and streaming platforms.
In my opinion, the Spring Festival Gala is still meaningful because it creates a shared moment for families. Maybe it doesn’t have to be canceled, but it should try to present in a creative way.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
