I went to London first to find a job at the age of 20 by myself. After 21 days in London, I moved to Leicester. I didn’t know anybody there. It was hard for me to be happy, because I found myself homeless. Luckily, I made many new friends there and they came to help me out. Not only did they offer me a sofa to sleep on now and then, they also guided me towards the Red Cross. The Red Cross helped me through the hard time so that I could get back on my feet.
My situation improved gradually with the help of the Red Cross, and I got a chance to study history and culture at college. I thought I must do something to thank the Red Cross, so I started volunteering for it. I did a lot to help, from money-raising to helping people in wheelchairs. I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼布被子). Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt belonged to my mother in the beginning. She once joined a weekly book club with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small room at a Children’s Home. I never saw my mother use it in the past. During one of my visits, I asked her why she kept it. She said it was a gift from Emily. I questioned more, as she was not so close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: “Because it was from Emily.”
After thinking this over for several days, I realized that the quilt’s value didn’t lie in its appearance or in its maker. It was special because it reminded my mom of being a good neighbor and caring for each other.
I kept the quilt more than ten years ago and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, and I hope she will keep it. Patchwork quilts carry stories. The tales we share about our experiences turn everyday things into something special.
63. Who made the small patchwork quilt for the mother?
A. Her own daughter. B. A member from the book club.
C. A neighbor from her new home. D. A friend from her childhood.
64. Why did the mother keep the quilt for years without using it?
A. Because it reminded her of family love.
B. Because she found it too beautiful to use.
C. Because she planned to give it to her friend.
D. Because it was a symbol of neighborly care.
65. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The quilt. B. The story. C. The patchwork. D. The experience.

If you were asked to introduce Lu You, how would you describe him? Perhaps as a famous poet who loved his country. But do you know he was also a “slashie” of his time? If he had a social media introduction, it might read: poet/ government official/ food expert/ cat person.
On Nov 13, people celebrated Lu’s 900th birthday. Born in the Southern Song Dynasty, he was one of China’s most famous poets—about 9,300 of his poems still remain. Many are filled with a wish to protect his homeland, making him a famous patriotic (爱国的) poet.
As a government official, Lu tried his best to advise the government. Back then, the Southern Song Dynasty was attacked by the northern Jin Dynasty. He disagreed with the way the government acted and called for fighting back, but was punished with a less important job because of his strong views.
Unhappy with official life, Lu found joy in hobbies. He loved flowers and food, writing a book on 65 peony (牡丹) types and over 100 poems about cooking. Many believe his healthy diet helped him live to be 85. He also loved cats, writing funny poems about them.
Lu showed us a full life can have many “slashes”—a great patriot who also valued life’s small joys!
67. What does the word “slashie” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. A person who writes some poems. B. A person with different life roles.

69. How did Lu You find happiness after being punished?

Sadness and happiness are often talked about by people in their free time. Most people want themselves to be happy forever, but few know how to find happiness. Others say if you own lots of money and success, you will be happy. However, money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. A famous Greek thinker, Aristotle, said, “Happiness depends on ourselves.” That’s to say, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future. For example, getting into college or getting a good job, which we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Finally, many people find happiness is helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping or help out with some things around the house for an elderly person.
If you do the above, you will be happy.
70. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Rich people are always happier. B. Helping others is helping ourselves.
C. Staying alone makes life happier. D. Worrying about future makes people fail.
71. What does the passage say about being active?
A. It is more useful for young people.
B. It helps people solve their problems better.
C. It lets people forget their problems for a while.
D. It makes people think about the future.
72. What’s the main idea of the passage?

“Hey, Ant, come sit with me,” said the grasshopper.

A few weeks later summer was almost at an end. The ant continued to take corn home every day, but the grasshopper just danced around.
“Come on, Ant!” said the grasshopper. “Dance with me!”

“But the winter is so far away! Your work looks so boring! Come with me!”
“No, thanks, Grasshopper. I’m going to continue with my boring work.”

I also went to Gloucestershire to give out food and other supplies (供给) when the earthquake hit the county in 2007.
After leaving college, the Red Cross offered me a job because of what I had done for it at college. The Red Cross helped me out. And now as a member of it, every day I can’t wait to help those who need help.

I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼布被子). Surprisingly however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.

69. How did Lu You find happiness after being punished?
A. By taking up some hobbies. B. By collecting more peony types.
C. By fighting against the Jin Dynasty. D. By continuing to advise the government.

A. Rich people are always happier. B. Helping others is helping ourselves.

71. What does the passage say about being active?
A. It is more useful for young people.
B. It helps people solve their problems better.

It was summertime. The ant and the grasshopper were in the farmer’s field. The ant was busy collecting corn. The grasshopper was relaxing in the sun.
“Hey, Ant, come sit with me,” said the grasshopper.
“No, thanks,” said the ant.” I have to take this corn home.”
A few weeks later, summer was almost at an end. The ant continued to take corn home every day, but the grasshopper just danced around.
“Come on, Ant!” said the grasshopper. “Dance with me!”
“No,” replied the ant. “I’m going to get more corn. Why don’t you join me? You should plan for the winter.”
“But the winter is so far away! Your work looks so boring! Come with me!”
“No, thanks, Grasshopper. I’m going to continue with my boring work.”
