When you want to ask your teacher a question during class, what do you do? Do you simply shout out your question as soon as it enters your mind? Or do you raise your hand and wait until the teacher calls your name?
If you politely raise your hand first, it’s probably because your teacher has a rule that regulates (规定) what you are allowed to do when you have a question. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone can simply talk whenever they want during class? Instead of a peaceful learning environment, a classroom without rules would be chaotic (混乱的)!
When you learn to drive, you’ll realize how many rules you have to follow. The rules for driving share a common purpose with many rules you must follow in your daily life to keep you safe. As an ancient Chinese saying goes, “No rules, no standards.” If you make a list of the rules you follow each day, you will quickly realize how many of them can keep you safe and make your life more enjoyable as a result.
Although sometimes you feel like a rule is unfair, don’t break it. Instead, decide what you can do to change the rule. Working within the rules to change the rules is what you need to do.

The Barbie doll is a famous toy in the West because of her long legs and blonde hair. But did you know that over 1,000 years ago in China, there were dolls just as beautiful and popular?
Beijing silk figurines (北京绢人) are made from thin silk, gauze (纱罗) and damask (锦缎). In 2021, the art of making these dolls was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Jiao Tianqi, 30, is an inheritor (传承人) of Beijing silk figurines. “For many, these silk figurines are just art pieces, but to me, they are like my children,” Jiao said.
Making a silk figurine takes many steps, like designing, painting and making clothes. Artists must make sure the doll’s head and body are the right size. “For a standing doll, the head should be 1/7 of the body. For a sitting doll, the head should be 1/5 of the body,” Jiao said.
Silk figurines are made to look like people from famous stories. The artists want to show what kind of person each character is. When making Wang Xifeng from Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》), Jiao studied her hairpin (发簪) look from the 1987 TV series to show she is an important person in the Jia family. “For Lin Daiyu, we made her look down shyly. This shows that she feels a little lonely,” Jiao said.
Since making silk figurines takes time and hard work, few carry on the art. To help with this problem, Jiao and
her team are using AI technology to make designing easier.
28. What can we infer about how Jiao Tianqi feel about Beijing silk figurines?
A. She sees them as just common art pieces.
B. She treats them with deep care and love.
C. She thinks they are less attractive than Barbie dolls.
D. She only values their commercial value.
29. When making Wang Xifeng’s silk figurine, Jiao studied the 1987 TV series to ______.
A. show Wang’s important position in the Jia family
B. copy the hairstyle of the TV character directly
C. prove the TV series is loyal to the novel
D. make the figurine look shy and lonely
30. Which of the following is NOT a reason why few people inherit the art of Beijing silk figurines?
A. It requires a lot of time.
B. It needs hard work.
C. The making process has too many steps.
D. AI technology has replaced traditional ways.
31. What’s the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain why Beijing silk figurines are cultural heritage.
B. To introduce how Jiao designs characters from stories.
C. To show efforts to protect the art of Beijing silk figurines.
D. To compare Beijing silk figurines with Barbie dolls.

A lot of people take up dancing as an after-school hobby. In fact, dancing has been considered one of the best exercises to fight bad feelings in recent years.
When you dance, you move your body to different kinds of music, which helps your body produce a lot of endorphins (内啡肽) that can make you feel relaxed and happy.
While simply listening to music or doing sports can cheer us up, mixing them gives better results. In a study, a group of German scientists tested some groups of patients under three conditions: dancing with music, listening to music, riding bikes without music. The results showed that the first group was the least depressed (沮丧的).
Dancing can bring people together, too. Whether it’s Tango or any other Latin dance, people need to move with others. This can improve their sense of social bonding (联系), according to IBSA, a Swiss scientific foundation.
Dancing also helps people let go of bad feelings. Studies have found that depression often has to do with sadness about the past or worries about the future. However, dancing helps people focus more on the present moment and free their mind for a while, as reported by Psych Central, a mental health news website.
Lauren Helper a social worker in Virginia, US, pointed out that if people enjoy music of any kind, dancing can be a helpful way to reduce stress. She also said that dancing can be done in many ways, whether it’s by moving around the house to a song or going out dancing with friends. “The important part of the movement is that it is fun,” she told Psych Central.
32. What can help you the most when you are sad according to the study?
A. Going to a concert B. Talking to a friend.
C. Dancing to music. D. Riding a bike.
33. What matters most when we move according to Lauren Helper?
A. The choice of music. B. The type of dance.
C. The connection to others. D. The feeling of fun.
34. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①②/③④⑤/⑥ B. ①②/③④⑤⑥ C. ①②③④⑤/⑥ D. ①/②③④⑤⑥
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Don’t forget to connect with others.
B. Get more endorphins in daily life.
C. Dance your way to happiness and health.
D. Relax yourself by singing and moving.

In China, students usually have summer and winter vacations and public holidays. But now, thanks to a government action plan introduced in March, many schools are adding extra (额外的) days off. The idea is that some primary and secondary schools could add spring and autumn breaks for students based on their own needs.
In Guangzhou, 310 students from Yuyan Middle School enjoyed a five-day spring break in March. They looked into history and science at sites (地点) like the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Zhuhai Aerospace Land (珠海太空中心). “While others are in classrooms, we’re out enjoying ourselves,” one of the students told Xinhua.
Yin Xianwen, a teacher from the school, sees it as a great way to learn. “Watching plants grow is a lesson in nature, visiting historical sites is a history lesson, and traveling together is a lesson in social skills,” Yin told People’s Daily. “It offers students the chance to get the most precious (宝贵的) growth experiences during the most beautiful season.”
Also, students can enjoy their spring break with families. It can help bring families closer together and reduce stress in studying, said Xinhua.
However, there are some challenges. Not all parents can take time off when their kids do, so some children may end up staying home and playing on their phones. Schools also need to find a way to fit all their lessons into the new schedule. To make these breaks work well, the government, schools, parents and communities need to work together, noted People’s Daily.

How do you enjoy yourself when you’re alone? According to a study by John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US, doing activities that need both concentration (注意力) and skill can help people deal with loneliness and enjoy being alone.
Dattilo explained that when people are absorbed in (全神贯注于) what they are doing, they get into a state called “flow”. People can achieve the state by doing what they love wholeheartedly and using their skills at the same time.
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance (平衡) between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. Also, if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you are a pianist or a painter, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people get into flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
Flow is a state that people get into when they ____50____ what they are doing. How do people achieve “flow”? They can do what they really love and use their skills at the same time. The task’s challenge should ____51____. If the task is too hard, people may feel stressed. If the task is too easy, they may feel bored. How do people feel in the state of “flow”?

B She treats them with deep care and love.
C. She thinks they are less attractive than Barbie dolls.
D She only values their commercial value.

Lauren Helper, a social worker in Virginia, US, pointed out that if people enjoy music of any kind, dancing can be a helpful way to reduce stress.

【答案】
例文
Recently, I made great progress in a basic life skill. I learned how to cook a simple dish—scrambled eggs with tomatoes.
At first, I just watched my mom do it. Then, I decided to try it myself. I found a recipe online and carefully followed the steps. It wasn’t easy. I failed a few times—the eggs were burnt or too salty. However, I didn’t give up. I kept practicing and asking my mom for tips after each try.
Now, I can make it perfectly. This progress makes me feel very proud and have confidence. It teaches me that with continuous effort and the courage to try, I can learn anything.
