“To me, it’s family. We are alive — that’s it,” Otoniel Gomez, a 67-year-old father, told NBC reporters.
A fire broke out on the first floor of a California home in the middle of the night. Captain Scan Doran of the Orange County Fire Authority explained what happened. He said that a woman first smelled smoke, and then woke up her husband, Gomez, who tried to open their door but couldn’t get out because of heavy smoke and heat. So he jumped from their bedroom window and then quickly found a ladder (梯子).
“The father, on the ladder, pounded (猛敲) on his son’s bedroom window, trying to wake him — but the boy was still fast asleep.” Doran noted. “With forced calm, he says, ‘Open the window. We’re going to have to jump. We’re going to get you out of here,’ over and over again.” With the window finally open, Gomez quickly guided his son down to safety. They successfully got out just moments before the fire completely burned down the house.

Even when things went wrong, he would always wear a smile.” She added, “as a child, I never felt uncertain or scared because of him.”
After the fire, Daisy Valdivia, one of Gomez’s kids, has started a GoFundMe (众筹) to help the family as they’ve lost everything in the fire. “My dad is facing one of the most difficult times of his life,” she wrote. “He is currently homeless, trying to care for his young child who is still in elementary school.”

We used to trust wildlife photography because it shows real events truthfully. The fun is in admiring the unexpected encounters and the skill of capturing the image. Even the difficulties photographers face make the images more attractive. In short, a real wildlife image makes sure what we see in a photograph is what really happened.
However, as AI becomes increasingly powerful, what does it mean for the wildlife images we see?
Some photographers believe the AI may become so good that we can’t tell real pictures from fake (虚假的) ones. Just as Tim Flach, a famous photographer, said, “when the line between real and fake starts to disappear, we will no longer know what to trust.” Indeed, outside of wildlife photography, they already are. In 2023, a German artist called Boris Eldagsen won the first prize at the Sony World Photography Awards with an image of two women he’d created entirely by AI, proving that even professionals can be tricked.
Although important photography competitions ask for original files (原稿) to prove a wildlife photo is real, this doesn’t stop many AI images on social media. The more such images appear the harder it is for people to trust wildlife photography.
The bigger danger, however, is on animal protection. What if AI is used to make pictures of animals that don’t exist, or to create exciting videos of things that never happened? It could start telling lies about how our natural world is doing. As Flach points out: “We already have big trouble getting people to understand the natural world, and AI might only make people feel more separate from it.” The danger is not just fake pictures, but that this technology might push us further away from the wildlife we are trying to understand and protect.
9. What is the value of a real wildlife photography?
A. Recording the truth of nature. B. Teaching photography skills.
C Showing endangered animals. D. Telling photographers’ stories.
10. Why does the author mention the 2023 award-winning AI image?
A. To compare different women images. B. To praise the artist’s creative skills.
C. To suggest AI works can fool experts. D. To indicate AI has been widely used.
11. What docs the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Animal protection. B. Technology.
C. The big trouble. D. The natural world.
12. What is the author’s attitude towards creating wildlife images with AI?
A. Curious. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.

I don’t mean any disrespect, but she was quite short, and her skin looked very dry and full of wrinkles (皱纹), like a grandmother from outer space. We called her Granny. She kept mostly to herself and would often be seen with a walking stick in hand carrying her body around our neighborhood.
Granny, a foreigner from Mexico, often found herself alone. And my mother would cook a little more food at suppertime and I would take it over to Granny’s house. Granny never came to the door although she might sometimes pull back a curtain and take a quick look through the window at us. So we learned to leave the meal on her doorstep and knock. Once we were a safe distance away, we’d see her hand reach out and pull the plate inside. The next morning we would hear a knock on our front door. By the time we got there Granny was gone, but she left behind a clean plate with some homemade tortillas (玉米粉圆饼) still warm from the pan. Although we never got a chance to thank her or even speak to her, she knew we loved her tortillas. And in her own silent way, she always showed us she was thankful.
One Christmas, while our family was sharing Christmas stories around the tree, I heard the doorbell ring. When I opened the door, there stood Granny.

根据第二段“He said that a woman first smelled smoke, and then woke up her husband, Gomez, who tried to open their door but couldn’t get out because of heavy smoke and heat.(他说,一名女子首先闻到了烟味,然后叫醒了丈夫Gomez。Gomez试图打开门,但由于浓烟和高温,无法出去)”可知,当Otoniel Gomez知道火灾发生时,他首先试图打开门。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“His eldest daughter, Amina, called him a hero. She said, “Growing up, I never saw him panic. I never saw him stressed out. Even when things went wrong, he would always wear a smile.”(他的大女儿Amina称他为英雄。她说:“在我的成长过程中,我从未见过他惊慌失措。我从未见过他压力过大。即使事情出了问题,他也总是面带微笑。”)”可知,Amina认为她的父亲冷静且积极乐观。故选B项。

【8题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,文章开头引用Otoniel Gomez的话“To me, it’s family. We are alive — that’s it (对我来说,是家人。我们还活着——这就够了)”奠定家庭与生命至上的基调。主体部分详细描述了他如何在火灾中“tried to open their door (试图开门)”,然后跳窗找到梯子,并“pounded (猛敲) on his son’s bedroom window (猛敲儿子的卧室窗户)”冷静引导他逃生,最终“successfully got out just moments before the fire completely burned down the house (在房屋被完全烧毁前成功逃出)”。 故选A项。

Some photographers believe the AI may become so good that we can’t tell real pictures from fake (虚假) ones.
C. Showing endangered animals.
A. Curious. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.
A 10. C 11. D 12. B
根据第一段“In short, a real wildlife image makes sure what we see in a photograph is what really happened.(简而言之,一幅真实的野生动物照片能够确保我们在照片中看到的景象就是实际发生的真实情况)”可知,真正的野生动物摄影的价值在于记录大自然的真实面貌。故选A。
根据第三段“In 2023, a German artist called Boris Eldagsen won the first prize at the Sony World Photography Awards with an image of two women he’d created entirely by AI, proving that even professionals can be tricked.(2023年,一位名叫鲍里斯·埃尔达格森的德国艺术家凭借一幅由人工智能完全创作的两名女性的图像,在索尼世界摄影奖评选中荣获一等奖,这证明即便是专业摄影师也可能被此类作品所“迷惑”)”可知,作者提及2023年获奖的那幅人工智能图像是为了表明人工智能作品能够骗过专家。
根据第五段“We already have big trouble getting people to understand the natural world, and AI might only make people feel more separate from it.(我们已经很难让人们理解自然世界了,而人工智能可能会让人们对它更加疏远)”可知,it通常指代前文最近的单数名词/核心概念。
根据最后一段“What if AI is used to make pictures of animals that don’t exist, or to create exciting videos of things that never happened? It could start telling lies about how our natural world is doing. As Flach points out: “We already have big trouble getting people to understand the natural world, and AI might only make people feel more separate from it.” The danger is not just fake pictures, but that this technology might push us further away from the wildlife we are trying to understand and protect.(倘若人工智能被用于绘制不存在的动物图像,或者制作出从未发生过的事件的精彩视频,那将会带来怎样的后果呢?

It’s your friend Kevin. Today we’re going to learn some useful sports-related expressions. In fact, many everyday idioms come from sports. Knowing them can make your English sound more natural. (大家好!我是你们的朋友凯文。今天我们将学习一些与体育相关的实用表达。事实上,许多日常习语都源自体育运动。了解它们能让你的英语听起来更自然)”是开场白,介绍了本次学习的内容和目的。B选项“Now, let’s begin by exploring some examples together. (现在,让我们一起通过探索一些例子来开始吧)”顺承上文,是典型的课程过渡语,宣布从引言部分进入具体例子的讲解,自然引出下文将要逐个介绍的三个习语(turn on a dime;not for the weak at heart;a test of one’s mettle)。
小标题“Expression 1: turn on a dime. (表达1:turn on a dime.)” 下文“I’m sure you’ve watched a sports match before, your team was winning, and then all of a sudden, the game “turned on a dime” and you were losing. (我相信你以前看过体育比赛,你的队伍本来领先,然后突然间,比赛“turn on a dime”了,你们就输了)”通过一个体育比赛场景的例子,展示了“turn on a dime”在语境中的具体运用,生动地体现了局势“瞬间反转”的感觉。D选项“It can be used to express how quickly unexpected things can happen. (它可以用来表达意想不到的事情能发生得多么快)”位于小标题之后、例子之前,直接给出了该习语的核心含义——描述某事(通常是意外的变化)发生得极快。这为理解下文的例子提供了清晰的语义指引。故选D项。
【15题详解】
上文“With endurance sports like cycling, it’s a test of one’s mettle to see who will come out on top. (对于像自行车这样的耐力运动,谁能胜出是对一个人勇气的考验)”将“a test of one’s mettle”这个习语与“耐力运动”联系起来,并点明了其意为“对勇气的考验”。C选项““Endurance sports” means sports events which last a long time. (“Endurance sports”是指持续时间很长的体育赛事)”插入其中,首先解释了什么叫做“endurance sports”,这有助于读者理解为何这类运动特别能“test one’s mettle”(因为时间长,考验的是持久力和意志力),使上下文的解释更加完整清晰。该选项提供了必要的背景知识。故选C项。

Her face shining with kindness, she took out a wrapped pack. She handed it to me with trembling hands, her eyes crinkling into a warm smile that softened her wrinkled face. I noticed the faint smell of cinnamon on her clothes, a sweet scent that lingered in the air as she moved. I carefully unwrapped it and found a hand-knitted scarf, its wool soft and warm. Before I could say “thank you”, she turned and slowly walked away with her walking stick. That Christmas, her silent gift wrapped us all in a warmth no fire could match, a reminder of the quiet love between us.
