B Most of us give very little thought to everyday household items, but San Francisco-based digital artist Eric Geusz turns kitchen tools, stationery, and other ordinary objects into magnificent spaceship designs. He clearly isn’t short on talent or imagination, but it can take time to visualize each unique spaceship. “Sometimes I can tell the object has a cool shape, but I have to look at it from many angles trying to find the best approach,” Geusz tells My Modern Met. When talking about the road to his creative work, Geusz reflects: “I have always had a huge passion for drawing and designing things since my childhood days of hot glue and legos. I have a degree in Computer Science with a minor in film and digital media and I have formal training in 3D, Animation and Compositing. Although I am a software engineer by day, by night I am a freelance digital artist, always working, and pushing myself to improve.” The talented digital artist finds inspiration in popular films about space as well as sci-fi comic book artists and illustrators. “I also love the early ‘50s and 60s’ era space tech,” Geusz shares. “I love photos of old Soviet rocket parts and those old futuristic concept paintings they used to do for the space program back then.” This retrofuturism (复古未来主义) influence shines through in each of Geusz’s spaceship artworks. In one piece, he reimagines salt and pepper shakers as cat space pods (太空舱), and in another, an eight-sided dice as a “D20 Surface Recon Lander.” With sharp eye and rich imagination, Geusz shapes everyday items into sci-fi masterpieces. Beyond showing creativity, his works inspire people to seek charm and wonder lying in the most common things in life. 5. What is a feature of Eric Geusz’s works? A. They support space research. B. They are easy to visualize. C. They are based on daily items. D. They express clear emotion. 6. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. Geusz’s famous works. B. Geusz’s professional background. C. Geusz’s childhood memories. D. Geusz’s academic achievement. 7. Where does Eric Geusz get inspiration for his works? A. Recent space technology. B. Modern Soviet space works. C. Sci-fi comic book illustrators. D. Worldwide space programs. 8. Which word best describes Eric Geusz? A. Innovative. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. Humorous. C Most Antarctic stations depend on diesel-powered (柴油驱动的) generators, but relying on diesel fuel has downsides: it is difficult and costly to transport heavy liquid fuel to such a remote location. And oil leaks also damage Antarctica’s ecosystem. “While other energy systems are designed to work above-30℃, the temperatures in Antarctic stations are often much lower,” Sun, a Chinese researcher, notes. To overcome those difficulties, Sun and his team developed a number of Antarctica-ready renewable energy systems. But perhaps the most significant step the team took was using hydrogen (氢) energy to help power the Qinling station through the long and dark winter. So how does that happen? A device called an electrolyzer is powered by wind and solar energy to break down water molecules (分子) into oxygen and hydrogen. Then the hydrogen is directed into an electrochemical device, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with only water and heat as by-products. While the water is recycled to use in further electrolysis (电解) , the heat is stored to warm up the electrolyzer when it becomes too cold to run. In this way, the system can keep the entire base working for around 48 hours. The renewable system can currently produce 60 percent of the overall supply of Qinling’s energy system when it’s running at full power, with the remaining 40 percent coming from diesel. But Sun and his team are determined to raise that percentage and to bring clean-energy systems to other Chinese polar bases as well. 9. What does the underlined word “downsides” mean? A. Disadvantages. B. Benefits. C. Mistakes. D. Doubts. 10. After the electricity is produced, the heat is stored to ______. A. help in further electrolysis B. keep the electrolyzer running C. increase the storage of hydrogen D. reduce the needs for wind and solar 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Diesel has fallen out of use currently. B. Developing other new energy is a must. C. Promoting the new system is expensive. D. The hydrogen system may see wider use. 12. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. The Working Principle of Electrolyzer. B. A Team’s Adventure in Antarctica. C. Clean Energy for Antarctic Stations. D. Problems of Traditional Energy. Everyone appreciates a good laugh, but not everyone knows how to develop a sense of humor that connects with others. ____13____. Luckily, years of hard work finally paid off. I stood on the podium as a national champion. That success was only the beginning. With the European Championship approaching, I was eager to push myself harder to see how far I could go. However, that drive gradually twisted into something else. The spark and joy I felt from kayaking started to fade away and my whole passion turned into pressure and became something I HAD to do, not something I CHOSE to do. Despite the pressure, preparing for the competition came first. So I was putting in more effort than ever, making no excuses and ignoring the signals from my body. Yet, something felt strange. I stopped progressing and found myself suffering from illness and injuries more often. As I poured all my energy into training, I grew more frustrated at not seeing the expected results. Still, I was stubborn (固执的). Believing it was a waste of time to rest and that more training was the only way to stay on top, I pushed myself even harder. As a result, my body finally gave up just before the European Championship. I fell ill twice in a row, forced to stay in bed while my champion dream slipped away. It was my coach who realized there was something wrong. He finally decided to adjust my training. So two weeks later, when I went back to practice, my coach sat me down. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My performance improved after I followed my coach’s advice, and he noticed it immediately. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 启用前★注意保密 贵阳市普通中学2025-2026学年度第一学期期末监测 高二英语 2026.1 本试卷分选择题和非选择题两部分,满分100分。 1.What will the woman probably do this afternoon? 9. A 10. B 11. D 12. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: So two weeks later, when I went back to practice, my coach sat me down. “When you push too hard on yourself, no extreme will hold long,” he said in a calm but firm voice. Seeing my puzzled look, he explained what I need was reducing my training frequency and learning to relax. To help me find my “spark” again, he then gave me a new plan which involved more rest and fewer sessions. I nodded slowly and decided to let go of the pressure and trust him. My performance improved after I followed my coach’s advice, and he noticed it immediately. He patted my back with a big smile. “You look much lighter on the water!” he praised. Feeling a sense of relief, I grinned from ear to ear. By resting more, my injuries healed and my energy returned. I finally learned that sometimes moving forward requires the courage to first slow down, listen, and breathe. Now, I’m looking forward to the next European Championship. 词汇激活 行为类 ①解释:explain/clarify/elucidate ②减少:reduce/decrease ③回来:return/come back ④需要:require/demand/call for 情绪类 ①平静的:calm/tranquil ②疑惑的:puzzled/confused 【点睛】[高分句型1] Seeing my puzzled look, he explained what I need was reducing my training frequency and learning to relax. (运用了现在分词Seeing作状语、that引导宾语从句并被省略、what引导主语从句) [高分句型2] To help me find my “spark” again, he then gave me a new plan which involved more rest and fewer sessions.
