If you were standing outside the Louvre in Paris on the morning of August 21, 1911, you might have noticed three men hurrying out of the museum. They seemed very tired, because they’d just spent the night in an art-supply container. And on that morning, with the Louvre still closed, they slipped out of their hiding place and lifted the painting, the Mona Lisa off the wall and headed to the Quai d’Orsay Station, where they boarded a 07:47 express train out of the city.
Twenty-eight hours passed when an artist, who felt he couldn’t work if the Mona Lisa wasn’t there, noticed the absence of the painting. But the artist wasn’t alarmed. At that time, there was a project under way to photograph the Louvre’s many works. Each piece had to be taken to the roof, since cameras did not work well inside in those days. So he persuaded a guard to check how long the photographers were going to have the painting. The guard came back and said, “The photographers say they don’t have it!”
After the Louvre announced the theft, newspapers all over the world ran headlines about the missing painting and it became an incredibly famous painting—literally overnight. Although critics began to consider the Mona Lisa, which was completed in 1507, as one of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpieces in the 1860s, it wasn’t even the most famous painting in its gallery, let alone in the Louvre.
The thieves turned out to be three Italians: two brothers, Vincenzo and Michele Lancelotti, and a handyman, Vincenzo Perugia, who had worked for the Louvre. They hoped to sell the painting. But the painting had received so much attention that it became too hot to hock. So they hid it in their Paris boardinghouse.
Twenty-eight months later, they finally decided to sell it to an art dealer in Florence, Italy. But the dealer reported to the police and they ended up in prison for eight months.
4. Why was the artist undisturbed when he found the painting missing?
A. He had already read about the theft. B. He knew it was moved to another gallery.
C. He didn’t like the painting very much. D. He thought it was with the photographers.
5. What can be learned about the Mona Lisa?
A. It was completed in the 1860s. B. It became a really hot painting in 1911.
C. It was an immediate success. D. It had many original copies in the Louvre.
6. Which best explains the underlined phrase “too hot to hock” in paragraph 4?
A. Too silly to steal. B. Too early to return.
C. Too famous to sell. D. Too expensive to buy.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Theft That Made the Mona Lisa Well-known
B. Three Italians Succeeded in Stealing Famous Paintings
C. An Art Lover Couldn’t Work Until He Saw the Mona Lisa
D. Leonardo da Vinci Was Ignored by Critics for a Long Time

The history of computers is a tale of relentless innovation, shrinking size, and exponential growth in capability. In the 1940s, the first electronic general-purpose computer, the ENIAC(Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), emerged as a behemoth — weighing 27 tons, occupying 1,800 square feet, and using 18,000 vacuum tubes. Its primary task was calculating artillery firing tables for the U.S. Army, a process that once took humans hours but ENIAC completed in minutes. However, it was far from user- friendly: programming required rewiring its circuits, and it consumed enough electricity to power a small neighborhood.
The 1950s and 1960s marked the transistor revolution, replacing fragile vacuum tubes with smaller, faster, and more reliable transistors. This shift birthed mainframe computers like IBM’s System/360, which dominated corporate and government sectors. Mainframes were still large and expensive, but they introduced batch processing and time-sharing, allowing multiple users to access the system simultaneously.
The 1970s brought another seismic shift; the microprocessor. Intel’s 4004 chip, released in 1971, integrated all the components of a central processing unit (CPU) onto a single silicon chip. This invention paved the way for personal computers (PCs). In 1975, the Altair 8800, a kit-based PC, ignited the home computing trend, followed by Apple’s Macintosh in 1984, which popularized the graphical user interface (GUI) and mouse — making computers accessible to non-technical users.
By the 2000s, mobile computing took center stage. Smartphones like the iPhone (2007) and Android devices packed computing power equivalent to 1990s supercomputers into pockets, with touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and app ecosystems. Today, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are redefining the field: users access vast computing resources remotely, and AI algorithms enable computers to learn, predict, and automate tasks once thought impossible.
From ENIAC’s clunky circuits to today’s AI-driven smartphones, computers have evolved from specialized tools to indispensable extensions of human capability, reshaping how we work, communicate, and live.
8. What was the primary function of the ENIAC?
A. To power mobile devices. B. To develop the first GUI.
C. To design microprocessors. D. To calculate artillery firing tables.
9. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. The rise of cloud computing.
B. The invention of the microprocessor.
C. The impact of smartphones on computing.
D. The transition from vacuum tubes to transistors and mainframes.
10. Which invention integrated a CPU onto a single silicon chip?
A. The ENIAC. B. The transistor.
C. The Intel 4004 microprocessor. D. The Apple Macintosh.
11. What can be inferred about the evolution of computers from the text?
A. Each technological breakthrough reduced size while increasing power.
B. AI has replaced the need for human interaction with computers.
C. The shift to mobile computing made computers less accessible.
D. Computers have become larger and more expensive over time.

Due to complex production processes and regional variations, it’s almost impossible to define lacquer ware (漆器) in simple words. Put simply, it refers to anything painted with lacquer on the surface.
Lacquer is a natural paint harvested from a poisonous tree that is only found in China, Japan and Korea. Once dried, it is remarkably resistant to water, acid, and, to a certain degree, heat. It is collected between June and October. A worker can generally handle 400-500 lacquer trees and gather up to 75kg in total per year.
After the milky liquid is collected, it is gently heated to remove water and impurities. Purified lacquer can then be applied to the surface of nearly any object made from wood, bamboo, cloth or metals. Once coated with a thin layer of lacquer, the object has to be placed in a warm place to dry. Usually, lacquer ware requires thirty or more coatings.
While items covered with lacquer have been found in China since the New Stone Age, lacquer ware with complex decoration made its first appearance during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
Since then, lacquer ware as an art form has developed along two distinct paths in China: surface decoration and lacquer carving. Surface decoration usually takes the form of painting. Carved lacquer ware, which combines the skills of painting and carving, is a unique Chinese achievement in lacquer art and is also lacquer art in its purest form.
During Tang Dynasty, lacquer decoration was introduced to Korea and Japan, where it took on a life of its own. In Korea, najeonchilgi became the dominant decorative technique and it has continued as such to the present day. Known for its beautiful changing lights, Korean lacquer ware is coated with lacquer mixed with shiny mother-of-pearl powder (珍珠母粉末). On the other hand, a technique called maki-e has developed to the highest degree in Japan, which either mixes gold and silver in powder to produce gold or silver lacquer, or spreads them over the lacquer surface to create a gold or silver effect.
12. What can we know about lacquer?
A. It can protect items coated with it. B. It is a newly invented paint.
C It can be found all around the globe. D. It has to be harvested in winter.
13. Which is considered as the unique form of lacquer art in China?
A. Maki-e. B. Lacquer carving.
C. Surface decoration. D. Najeonchilgi.
14. What is Korean lacquer ware best-known for?
A. Its artistic carving. B. Its gold or silver effect.
C. Its purest painting. D. Its changing shiny lights.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Politics. B. Technology. C. Culture. D. Advertisement.

People have to be very intentional about what their priorities are in life and create boundaries around what’s really meaningful. ____19____.
Be a tourist in your own town
Part of what makes a holiday so exciting is the novelty of a new place. ____20____. In short, do things that bring you joy and let you discover a destination. Our family love hockey(曲棍球) and we are huge fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I have watched them on television since I was a little kid. But the most exciting part of hockey for my family was travelling from our home in the country to Toronto to watch them play live at Maple Leaf Gardens!
My mom’s dad died when she was a teenager. My grandpa had season tickets to the Gardens. The tickets were given to my grandma and eventually they were passed on to my mom. Thanks to my grandpa’s legacy(遗赠), we have four first-row centre ice season tickets at Maple Leaf Gardens. For years, my dad, mom, twin sister Susan, and I cheered for the Leafs there—until my younger sister Aynsley was born, making our family five.
As she grew up, she also began to watch hockey and travel to Toronto to Maple Leaf Gardens. Because there were only four seats, many times my mom would stay at home as the four of us—my dad, two sisters and I—went to see the Leafs. We always wished it could have been the five of us going together.
Bad news struck when Maple Leaf Gardens announced its closure, with the last game on February 13, 1999, against the Chicago Blackhawks. Determined not to miss this historic night, we planned to change seats in turn through the three periods so everyone could attend. Susan volunteered to sit out the first part of the first period. Then I was set to change places with her so that she could see the game, too.
But after the national anthems(国歌) played, I was overcome with a feeling that my sister should be sitting up there and I left my seat to change places with her earlier than planned. As I walked downstairs, heading towards the gate, a Maple Leaf Gardens ticket collector asked me where I was going. I explained that I was going to let my sister watch the game.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“So you have a ticket?” he asked.

【答案】
“So you have a ticket?” he asked. I showed him my ticket, and he took a moment to look at it. Then, with a kind smile, he said, “You know what? You kids, are so sweet. I can tell you really love this game and your sister. Why don’t you both go up and watch the game together? I’ll find a way to make it work.” I was stunned. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Are you sure?” I asked, my eyes wide with surprise. He nodded firmly.
The man’s understanding and tolerance shocked me. I quickly ran back to get Susan. Together, we rushed back to the seats. Throughout the game, we cheered and shouted, fully enjoying the thrilling moments. I felt a deep sense of gratitude towards that kind ticket collector. His simple act of kindness not only made it possible for both of us to watch the game but also left a lasting impression on me. It was a night I would always remember, not just for the exciting hockey game, but for the unexpected kindness that made it even more special.
