David Austin, raised in Shropshire’s countryside, developed a passion (热情) for plants from childhood. His interest in flowers was started by a garden magazine in the school library, and a visit to a garden of his father’s friend James Baker left him amazed by new lupin (羽扇豆) kinds. It was at this time that the idea of developing new kinds of plants himself really started to take hold. Though his farming family didn’t support his focus on flowers, a rose book gifted by his sister on his 21st birthday made him fall in love with roses.
David took up rose growing as a hobby in his twenties, loving Old Roses but noticing modern Hybrid Teas has something Old Roses lacked: a much wider colour range and the ability to repeat flower. This was his light bulb moment. He began to create something entirely new — a rose with the beauty and pleasant smell of his much-loved Old Roses but with the benefits of modern roses.
His work started tough: his first plants died from a disease, and he had to start all over again the following year. However, with time and passion, he created his first rose Constance Spry in 1961. Many people among professional growers questioned its market potential. Not losing heart, he sold his roses to the public himself. By 1969, he created “English Roses”, a new kind mixing old and new roses, naming them to honor England’s deep cultural connection with roses.
With his wife Pat’s support, his roses gradually gained popularity. A huge success came in 1983 at the Chelsea Flower Show, where his Graham Thomas rose received an extremely positive response from the public and press. Later, he earned many gold medals and honors for his outstanding contributions to horticulture (园艺).
Apart from his passion for roses, David had a great love for literature and published several books and poems. A family-focused man, he stayed rooted in his Shropshire hometown even as his business grew, living with his family on the farm. He kept the business family-run, with his son and grandsons joining the team. David Austin Roses grew into a world-famous business, and he was called the Father of English Roses for his lifelong passion.
4. What does the first paragraph focus on?
A. The support from David’s family B. David’s love for garden magazines.
C. The great attraction of roses. D. David’s early interest in plants and roses.
5. What does the author mean by saying “This was his light bulb moment” in paragraph 2?
A. David slightly hesitated. B. David suddenly got inspired.
C. David publicly agreed. D. David finally got accepted.
6. What can we infer about David from the last paragraph?
A. He operated the business alone. B. He valued business over family.
C He ignored his interest in writing. D. He won world-wide recognition.
7. Which of the following best describes David?
A. Creative and devoted. B. Honest and gifted.
C. Courageous and sensitive. D. Clever and generous.

Have you ever heard of the term “the art of effortless action”? It describes a state where we join in activities simply for the love of doing them, without caring too much about the result.
In our modern world, this idea often seems to go against common sense. As a society, we are focused on results, metrics (指标), and achievement. We could call this the “goal-driven drive.” And the truth is, it does work — but only to a point, and always with a cost. Problems come up when we place so much pressure on the result that we lose focus on the doing. We begin to connect our self-worth completely to the result. We tell ourselves, “I will work really hard at school so that I can be a doctor someday and people will look up to me. If I don’t make it, I’m a failure.” This way of thinking also causes anxiety. The journey makes you feel terrible because every little thing that goes wrong feels like a big failure. When we are driven only by the finish line, we miss the joy of the race.
So, is it possible to find freedom in doing things without necessarily focusing on achievement?
History suggests the answer is yes. Consider Albert Einstein. When he was developing his theory of relativity (相对论), he was not a well-known scientist. He was just working at an office known by nobody. Einstein wasn’t driven by a metric or a need to become famous. Instead, he wanted to answer some of the deepest mysteries (奥秘) of our universe simply because he loved the question. His effortless action — driven by interest rather than pressure — changed the world.
If we look at a list of people who have achieved great success in the eyes of the world, we often find that their personal lives are in a mess. If we only focus on the finish line, we risk losing everything else along the way.
The art of effortless action asks us to reconsider success. It invites us to find joy in doing things every day, not just a future prize. When we do things without attaching so much importance to the result — simply because we love them — the pressure disappears.
8. What is the feature of “effortless action”?
A. Focusing on the result. B. Joining in activities to impress others.
C. Taking up activities out of interest. D. Achieving success with the least effort.
9. What will happen if you are too goal-driven?
A. You will face more challenges. B. You will stop working hard at school.
C. You will choose unsuitable jobs. D. You will lose the joy of an experience.
10. Why is Albert Einstein mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show that he made great achievements.
B. To explain that success requires hard work.
C. To stress that creative thinking is important.
D. To prove that effortless action makes a difference.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Goal-driven Drive: The Cost of Success
B. Goal-driven Drive: The Path to Achievement
C. Effortless Action: Finding Joy in the Journey
D. Effortless Action: Staying Focused under Pressure

Flavor (风味) isn’t just on your tongue; it’s also in your brain. New brain scans (扫描) have found a part of the brain that mixes taste and smell to make flavor. Smell and taste are very closely connected — the smell of your favorite food can make you think of its taste right away. Putu Agus Khorisantono, a scientist in Sweden, says these senses are connected the moment you bite into something. In our bodies, many food chemicals stick to receptors (受体) on the tongue for sweet, salty, sour or bitter tastes. Other compounds, called back-of-the-nose smells, travel through the roof of the mouth and stick to receptors at the back of the nose.
Scientists have long tried to find where in the brain taste and smell are connected. Khorisantono’s team did a study with 25 people. First, they trained these people to connect mixtures of smells and tastes with certain flavors. Then, they gave them tiny drops of drinks that activated either taste or back-of-the-nose smell receptors. While these people tried the drinks, the researchers scanned their brain activity. To analyze the scans, the team used machine learning. They trained computer programs on different parts of the brain and found the best program was trained on a part called the insula (脑岛).
Before, scientists thought the insula only reacted to taste. But later research found some insula cells respond to both taste and smell. In the new study, the scans of the insula looked almost the same whether these people got a flavor’s smell or taste. This means the insula likely understands these signals in a similar way. Other parts of the brain that worked well may get flavor signals from the insula.
The findings were published in Nature Communications on September 12. The insula is hard to study because it’s deep in the brain. Another scientist Ivan de Araujo says advanced methods like machine learning are changing that. He adds the findings could explain why people like some foods and dislike others. His team is now testing if front-of-the-nose smells, like those from bakeries, also cause the insula to respond.
12. What was the purpose of the study led by Khorisantono?
A. To create new flavors. B. To study how food tastes.
C. To explain the use of flavor. D. To find where flavor is created.
13. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
A. Research background. B. Research steps.
C. Research equipment. D. Research findings.
14. What is the role of the insula according to the text?
A. It connects taste and smell. B. It separates signals and responses.
C. It mixes feelings and experiences. D. It controls the sense of touch.
15. What could the findings explain according to the last paragraph?
A. The attraction of food. B. The function of human brains.
C. People’s food preferences. D. The importance of machine learning.

An Online Seminar (研讨会) on Environmental Protection
Last week, our school held an online seminar themed “Talking About Environmental Protection Together in the Cloud” with our UK sister school. Students from both sides actively took part in it.
During the seminar, participants shared various environmental practices. We introduced activities like campus recycling and tree-planting drives, while UK students talked about their efforts in reducing plastic use and promoting low-carbon travel.
The seminar was a great success. It not only enhanced mutual understanding but also inspired students to take more environmental actions. Everyone praised it as a meaningful and eye-opening event.
