B Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a rich family. From her early years, she exhibited an extraordinary tendency towards assisting others. In an era when society expected that a young woman of her status would marry into wealth and lead a comfortable and carefree life. Florence had a distinct vision. Nursing, during that period, was regarded as a lowly occupation, yet she was firmly convinced that her true calling lay in serving humanity through this very field. When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, the news reached Florence. Florence heard about the terrible situation of the wounded soldiers and decided to take action. She led a team of nurses to the front. As soon as they got there, they met many terrible challenges, but Florence was not afraid. There was a serious shortage of medical supplies and basic necessities were often in short supply. The hygienic (卫生的) conditions were extremely poor, posing a serious threat to the recovery of patients. Some officers were deeply influenced by traditional ideas that women had no ability to contribute in such a bad environment. Florence remained determined. She worked day and night to attend to the sick and wounded selflessly. Her efforts achieved a lot and the survival rate of soldiers was significantly improved. After the war, Florence’s work was far from finished. She was determined to revolutionize the nursing profession. She established some well-known nursing schools, where she could pass on her knowledge and values to future generations. She also wrote several influential books on nursing practices, which became essential resources in the field. Her remarkable achievements not only enhanced the status of nurses but also had a far-reaching and profound impact on the healthcare. Florence Nightingale passed away in 1910, but her memory as “the Lady with the Lamp” inspired countless nurses and healthcare workers to follow in her noble footsteps. 4. What can we learn about Florence Nightingale? A. She married into wealth. B. She was born into a poor family. C. She wanted to lead a relaxing life. D. She desired to serve humanity as a nurse. 5. How did Florence Nightingale face the challenges during the Crimean War? A. With her strong determination. B. With the help of some officers. C. With the support from her family. D. With the help of soldiers in war. 6. What was Florence’s main contribution after the Crimean War? A. She became a famous war hero. B. She was devoted to nursing innovation. C. She was invited to give lectures. D. She was engaged in medical research. 7. What is the passage mainly about? A. Nightingale’s education. B. Nightingale’s family. C. Nightingale’s achievements. D Nightingale’s books. C Picture this: you are in a position where your phone runs out of battery, but you don’t have anywhere to charge it. Well, what if the clothing you were wearing could help you out? It’s an option that isn’t as strange as you might think. Now the latest fashion breakthrough is taking “activewear” in an entirely new direction: researchers at Nottingham Trent University have developed a new fabric that can keep small devices juiced. The prototype (样品) includes 1,200 tiny solar panels, each measuring just 5 by 1.5 millimeters. It can generate 400 milliwatts (毫瓦特) of electrical energy, enough to charge electronic devices. “Until now very few people have considered their clothing products could be used for charging electronic devices,” explains Theodore Hughes-Riley, an associate professor of Electronic Textiles. “The material which we have developed appears and behaves the same as any ordinary fabric, as it can be washed in a machine. Besides, because the tiny solar cells are made up of silicon, wearers aren’t able to even notice a discrepancy in the fabric’s composition when it is compared to standard clothing.” Potential products include items like outerwear, backpacks and other carrying bags using the material, all of which could allow wearers to keep their devices charged during the day. “Electronic fabrics really have the potential to change people’s relationship with technology, as this prototype shows how we could do away with charging many devices on the wall,” adds Theodore. Solar power innovations are key to transitioning (转变) human society from fossil fuel technologies, and are coming into a variety of fields. The European Space Agency, for example, plans to experiment with solar panel systems orbiting above Earth. Since there are no real “days” or “nights” in space, potential solar power generation could be as much as 8 or 9 times greater than what’s currently achievable here on Earth’s surface. As powerful as that may one day be for us, it’s encouraging to know even changes like the composition of our clothing can help facilitate the necessary renewable energy shift for our species. 8. What makes the new fabric special? A. It can produce electricity from sunlight. B. It can change color in the sun. C. It is much softer than standard clothing. D It can adjust body temperature. 9. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Progress. B. Distinction. C. Similarity. D. Mismatch. 10. How does the innovation impact our relationship with technology according to Theodore? A. By making electronic devices cheaper and cheaper. B. By increasing our dependence on electronic devices. C. By making us more aware of our energy consumption. D. By reducing the demand for fixed charging equipment. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Solar energy will soon replace fossil fuels. B. Solar power is more useful in space than on Earth. C. Small changes can contribute to a renewable energy future. D. Space exploration is necessary for advancing solar technology. D Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has increased over the past 20 years. UPFs contain few or no whole foods, are industrially produced, are ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, and include additives. The ultra-processing of food reduces its nutritional value. It has been known that higher UPF consumption is associated with overweight and heart disease. Now, research has been extended to examine its impact on mental health. In a new study, over 72,000 participants who were at least 55 years old and didn’t have dementia (痴呆) at the start of the study were followed for an average of 10 years, during which they filled out questionnaires regarding their diet. By the end of the study, 518 people were diagnosed with dementia. After adjusting for other factors that could affect risk of dementia such as age, gender, and heart disease, researchers found every 10 percent increase in daily intake of UPFs was associated with a 25 percent higher risk of dementia. They also found replacing 10 percent of UPFs with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was associated with a 19 percent lower risk of dementia. In another study, researchers found individuals who consumed the most UPFs had significant increases in the symptoms of mild depression, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxious days”. Eric Hecht, Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Etiological Research, said, “More than 70 percent of packaged foods in the US are classified as UPFs and represent about 60 percent of all calories consumed by Americans. Considering the degree of exposure to and effects of UPF consumption, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help improve future development of dietary guidelines.” Facing such alarming data, maybe it’s time for Americans to reconsider their food choices. Researchers recommend taxes on UPFs and carrying out policies to reduce the consumption. They also support programs and policies to increase the availability and affordability of whole foods, especially among disadvantaged populations. 12. What do we know about UPFs? A. They have no nutritional value. B. They are cheap and mass-produced. C. They are ready-made and instant foods. D. They serve as additions to our daily diets. 13. What’s Eric Hecht’s attitude toward the new study? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Ambiguous. D. Doubtful. 14. What do researchers suggest doing? A. Collecting higher taxes on UPFs. B. Decreasing UPFs’ consumption in diet. C. Focusing on the nutrient content of foods. D. Increasing public awareness of whole foods. 15. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Public Health Response to UPFs B. Physical Disorders Linked to UPFs C. Rising Consumption of UPFs in the US D. Negative Effects of UPFs on Mental Health 第二节 七选五阅读(满分12. 5分) Why Take Your Kids to the Local Library Regularly? Owing to financial difficulties, he could not afford a car. After his wife passed away six years ago, Adam was left alone to care for his children. Thankfully, his eldest daughter, Stacey, 22, would help with the breakfast preparation and get the kids ready every morning when he was out jogging. Adam looked at his watch. He’d have to go home in thirty minutes. He finished another round of the park and was ready to leave when the sight of an elderly lady stopped him in his tracks. She was struggling up the park stairs, and just as she neared the top, she lost her footing and fell back down, rolling awkwardly. “Ma’ am!” Adam ran over to the woman quickly. “Are you OK?” “I’m fine; it was just a little fall,” she replied, but Adam worried she wasn’t fine. He offered to call the ambulance, but she refused. “Please let me take you to a nearby clinic on my motorcycle,” he said, offering his arm to her, and she agreed. They began to chat on their way to the clinic, and the woman introduced herself as Alice. She said she had lost her husband, Frank, for a few years. Her husband was in a business that helped families move. After he passed away, his truck was parked in the garage. Adam knew how it felt to lose a loved one and he opened up to Alice about his wife, too. As they reached the clinic, the doctor there told Alice that she was fine. Then Adam sent the woman home. Alice wanted to thank Adam so she asked for his address. “I just want to send you something for your kids, and thank you,” she said. D. It can adjust body temperature. C By making us more aware of our energy consumption. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. In another study researchers found individuals who consumed the most UPFs had significant increases in the symptoms of mild depression, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxious days”. Negative Effects of UPFs on Mental Health 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. Adam was on his usual jog at the local park, after which he had to ride his motorcycle home to drop his children - Amanda. 13, and Jared.8-to school. Adam hesitantly gave her his address and hurried home to his children. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next morning, Stacey’s voice awakened Adam. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At first, Adam wanted to refuse Alice’s truck. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 The next morning, Stacey’s voice awakened Adam. “Dad! Quick! Something weird is happening outside!” Rubbing his eyes, Adam approached the bedroom window and spotted a moving truck parked near his driveway. When he stepped outside, he was surprised to see Alice beside the truck. “Alice, what is this?” he asked, approaching her. “A little gift from me to thank you for your kindness,” she said, patting the truck. At first Adam wanted to refuse Alice’s truck. But her gift could case his financial worries, so he accepted it. After she left, he and his children began to look through the truck. The children were so excited to have a truck since there was no means of transport except a second-hand motorcycle. They asked their dad to go for a drive. Adam agreed. Along the way, the family laughed to their hearts’ content. It was the first time that Adam had been so happy since her wife’s death. He felt grateful for Alice’s generosity. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:spot/find out ②缓解:ease/relieve ③接受:accept /embrace 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprised/shocked ②激动:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] When he stepped outside, he was surprised to see Alice beside the truck.
