The new one can sense fire the size of a car. And will that be enough of a difference to stop the fire from spreading? We believe so. Hopefully, I will give firefighters enough time to stop IT before IT gets too big. If they get the plane up in time, they could stop IT dead. If IT works, I really hope you get recognition for IT. I just want to try and stop trees from burning, and more importantly, protect the poor animals that live in them. I know we often only consider the human cost, never the animal one. It’s widely understood that a mentor benefits one’s career. Yet research shows 76% of professionals see mentors as important, but only 37% have one — partly due to a narrow definition of a mentor.
Great mentors can come from anywhere — they can be younger and might even be outside of the field of expertise. Anyone whose opinion one values and trusts can fill this role.
To illustrate that guidance can come from diverse people, we asked members of the Wyss Institute at Harvard at various points in their career journeys to share their best advice. Here’s what they said:
“First, nothing is impossible. It’s just that nobody has found a way to accomplish it yet. Second, don’t be disappointed if reviewers don’t believe in your work. It’s a better reason to prove them wrong.”
— Bogdan Budnik, Principal Scientist
“The biggest piece of advice I will give is to stay curious and persistent. Curiosity will help you innovate, and persistence will help you overcome difficulties that you might face. Science is full of unexpected twists and turns. It’s only with an open mindset and determination that you will turn those obstacles into opportunities.”
— Jie Ji, Postdoctoral (博士后) Fellow
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The best way I’ve found to invest in my education, build connections, and develop research skills is by being inquisitive and curious. One of the best parts about being a researcher is learning about things that are important and interesting, and having the opportunity to ask the experts you work with about their areas of expertise is the best tool available!”
— Katie Lyon, Research Assistant
21. What does Bogdan Budnik want to advise?
A. Learning from reviewers. B. Pursuing your passion.
C. Keeping trying. D. Raising doubt.
22. What do Jie Ji and Katie Lyon both emphasize?
A Being curious. B. Valuing education.
C. Staying open-minded. D. Accepting twists and turns.
23. Who is the passage intended for?
A Ambitious young researchers. B. Retired university staff.
C. Senior professionals at Harvard. D. Great mentors of the Wyss.

My daughter is a smart kid but she’d never read books for pleasure. When I faced this truth a few months ago, it felt like a parenting failure. Certainly, my daughter’s having landed a smartphone last year is part of the problem. I could see that what my daughter was looking for, like so many her age, was escape. To me, that felt developmentally appropriate. The problem was that her go — to escape was the addictive chaos of her smartphone.
So I tried convincing her: novels are the best way to understand people’s inner selves. She argued she could learn more from watching the people she followed on social media, who were all about spilling their insides.
I could not win our debates, I realized, because few of my daughters’ arguments against reading seemed wrong to me. Yes, reading is a way to broaden your universe — but so is the entire Internet.
So I decided to cut through all the reasoning with a cold, hard practicality: cash. I told my 12-year-old I would pay her $100 if she finished the book I picked for her within a month. We then embarked on a beach holiday. And before the seventh day was done, my daughter had finished the book. When we got back home, she asked for the sequel (续集), and then finished it in about two weeks — at no extra charge.
It actually worked! But will this lead to her reading Little Women? To tearing through Catcher in the Rye and White Teeth? Will it result in a long reading life full of night-stand piles of books? I don’t know. What I do know is that together, we finally opened a new door for her to the printed page: a quiet personal place that I imagine — I hope — will serve her for a lifetime. That feels like the best money I ever spent.
24. What became a main problem for the daughter?
A. Losing interest in daily study.
B. Being addicted to smartphone use.
C. Refusing to communicate with others.
D. Being poor at doing academic reading.
25. What does the phrase “spilling their insides” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Exposing others’ private lives. B. Sharing funny daily experiences.
C. Expressing personal inner thoughts. D. Complaining about life difficulties.
26. Why did the author fail to win the debates with her daughter?
A. She lacked knowledge of reading benefits.
B. She partly acknowledged her daughter’s views.
C. She didn’t prepare enough evidence for reading.
D. Her daughter’s arguments were completely correct.
27. What can be inferred about the cash reward according to the last paragraph?
A. It would make the daughter love classic literature.
B. It was a waste of money despite temporary success.
C. It solved the daughter’s reading problem thoroughly.
D. It was a practical starting point for fostering reading.
C
Chinese researchers have developed a high-precision and easily expanded analog matrix computing chip (模拟矩阵计算芯片) based on resistive memory, realizing for the first time an analog computing system whose accuracy matches that of digital computing. The breakthrough was achieved by a team led by researcher Sun Zhong from the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at Peking University, in collaboration with the School of Integrated Circuits.
For a long time, it has been a longstanding challenge for scientists to make analog computing both highly precise and scalable (可扩展的). Solving this is key to unlocking its full potential for modern computing. Sun’s team took an integrated innovation approach, combining novel devices, groundbreaking circuits, and classical algorithms (算法) to build a high-precision, scalable analog matrix solver based on resistive memory arrays — achieving, for the first time, 24-bit fixed-point accuracy in analog computing.
The chip delivers computing throughput (计算吞吐量) and energy efficiency 100 to 1, 000 times greater than current top digital processors (GPUs) in solving key scientific problems. It outperforms a high-end GPU core when solving a 32×32 matrix, and for larger 128×128 problems. What takes a GPU a full day, this chip can finish in about a minute. At the same precision, it is also over 100 times more energy-efficient, offering a breakthrough for next-generation high-efficiency computing centers.
When discussing application prospects, Sun Zhong believes that simulation computing chip will serve as a powerful aid in the future AI field. He predicted that the new chip and existing computing architectures will coexist and team up in the future. “The CPU, as a universal ‘main controller’, is still irreplaceable due to its technological maturity and cost-effectiveness. The GPU, on the other hand, specializes in accelerating matrix multiplication calculations. Our simulation computing chip aims to handle the most energy-consuming process of matrix inversion in AI and other fields more efficiently, serving as a strong support to the existing computing system.”
28. How did the team make this new chip?
A. They used the best digital chips.
B. They only worked on improving circuits.
C. They used older materials instead of new memory.
D. They mixed new parts, circuits, and math methods.
29. What is the main advantage of the chip over GPU?
A. It is much cheaper to make.
B. It solves all problems much faster.
C. It is faster and more energy-efficient.
D. It makes GPU useless for math tasks.
30. What will be the role of the new chip?
A. It will be used as a controller.
B. It will specialize in one specific task.
C. It will take the place of CPUs and GPUs.
D. It will work alongside current CPUs and GPUs.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Digital VS. Analog: Which is More Accurate?
B. AI’s New Role: Shaping Computer Chip Futures.
C. Analog Computing Rises: A Chip to Replace Old ones.
D. A Computing Jump: A New Chip to Help Current Systems.
D
Not long ago, you had to physically hand over cash to buy something. You witnessed it exit your wallet. You sensed it. But with payment services Klarna or Clearpay, you can now pay for a new phone in three installments (分期付款) and barely notice the difference. This isn’t just a shopping habit; it’s a reflection of how we relate to money today. We are becoming increasingly free of the emotional burden of spending. Additionally, our mental health is being profoundly affected by this quiet shift.
The popularity of Buy Now, Pay Later(BNPL) plans has skyrocketed. They promise freedom and flexibility, but the ease of use can trick our minds. When payment is divided into smaller payments, we are wired to find it less painful. Although the £15 payments seem insignificant, they quickly add up. Psychologists found that when the act of paying is separated from the act of purchasing, we experience less“pain of paying”, which makes us more likely to overspend. In societies where digital credit is easily accessible but financial education is limited, this behaviour can fall into lasting debt.
Stress over money doesn’t stay in the bank. It follows us into our homes, our relationships, and even our sleep. Research from multiple countries has shown that personal debts is strongly associated with depression and anxiety.
That’s why we need to talk about money more often — not just how to make it, but how we feel about it— in families, schools, workplaces, and therapy rooms. Therapists should be able to ask about financial stress with confidence. Financial education ought to be treated as essential in schools. Additionally, we should normalize debt-related conversations to relieve people’s feelings of isolation and shame. Financial stress can make you feel helpless. But by addressing the emotional side of money and building healthier habits, we can move from crisis to confidence.
We live in a world where money is invisible. But the emotional burden it takes is very real. If we start noticing that cost, we might finally treat money not only as a resource, but as something deeply psychological.
32. What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. Traditional cash payment. B. Changes in payment habits.
C. Ways to buy a new phone. D. Mental health influences.
33. What risk may BNPL bring eventually?
A. Limited digital credit. B. Long-term debt trouble.
C. Better spending habits. D. More payment freedom.
34. Which helps build healthy financial habits?
A Avoiding BNPL services. B. Increasing digital credit use.
C. Strengthening financial education. D. Ignoring debt-related stress.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards BNPL?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Enthusiastic.

The roar was loud and frightening as I stood underneath the roller coaster. It circled around me, pulling over 5G worth of force. It was enough force to make a bystander feel its intense power without even being on it. We had a babysitter for the evening for our wedding anniversary, and time was ticking by as I watched this roller coaster thunder down the track without me on it. If I was going to get enough courage to ride it before we had to relieve the babysitter, it had to happen soon.
I started making excuses to my husband. I began listing all the things that I was less afraid of than going on that roller coaster. “I’m less afraid to get a tattoo, go on a motorcycle…” I muttered.
But, deep down inside, I didn’t want to let the fear steal away what could be a wild adventure to celebrate our anniversary. I had never been on an upside-down ride in my life. I have always played it safe.
“It’s now or never,” my husband said, showing me the time on his phone.
Standing on the sidelines in my comfort zone felt safe. But it also felt like a cage. I was growing tired of being in that cage. My comfort zone was damaging me more than it was saving me now. And there was only one way out.
I looked up at the roller coaster and realized that it only took about ninety seconds to run all the way through.
For a minute and a half, I could hold on and endure whatever body-rattling chaos I was about to put myself through. That was all that stood between me and a more adventurous existence. My breathing was getting quicker, and I could feel the courage building inside me.
“Let’s get the tickets NOW!” I exclaimed and ran over to the ticket counter with a burst of energy. With tickets in hand, we got in line.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
【66题答案】
【答案】(possible version)
Dear James,
After participating in the mental health activity held by our school last Friday, I’m writing to share with you some detailed information.
The activity, whose theme was “Heart to Heart”, was aimed at relieving our pressure and motivating us to study harder and more efficiently. What impressed me most was the lecture given by a psychological professor who provided us with professional guidance. Then came some interesting games in which we cooperated with our classmates and promoted our emotional communication. Through this activity, not only do I have a deeper understanding of my emotions, but also learn to face the difficulties in study and life more positively.
What a rewarding activity it is! I hope you can also experience this activity, a perfect blend of fun and benefits.
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】(possible version)
We finally took our seats and fastened our seat belts. The slow, scary climb was the worst part, each click of the chain pulling my heart higher into my throat. Then came the plunge — a breathtaking drop that stole my scream and left my stomach somewhere far behind. As we sped through circles and corkscrews, a dreamlike calm washed over me. The world became a blur of sky and ground, and the terrifying roar faded into the background. At that moment, I wasn’t scared; I was free. When the ride slowed to a stop, my hands were trembling, but a huge, unexpected grin was spreading across my face. I had not just survived it; I had conquered it.
There have been many “roller coasters” since that day. The term has become our family’s symbol for any tough challenge, whether it was my decision to go back to school or our move to a new city. It was those ninety seconds that engraved a lasting lesson: the cage of comfort is often more limiting than the temporary chaos of courage. Now, when fear of the unknown whispers to me to stay put, I remember the roar of that coaster and the incredible height that awaited on the other side of fear. I learned that only by boarding the ride willingly, whatever shape it assumes, can we expand the boundaries of our world.
