When I was asked to go there as a teacher, I didn’t know either. Lesotho is a small, mountainous country surrounded by its larger neighbor, South Africa. Winters are so cold and dry that trees can only survive if they’re near a spring or river. So when I met Wilfred, who had many trees to plant on his way home, I had to see what he’d done. My brother and I made the two-hour hike one winter morning. As we came around the mountain, we saw lots of trees. We continued on and reached Wilfred’s home in an area surrounded by a wonder: a garden with peach and pear trees. I was amazed at what Wilfred had achieved, but he said most of the work was done by his father, Mr Pitso. I felt great admiration for Mr Pitso. He mentioned that he started planting peach trees 20 years earlier. At first, people were resentful, and several times others removed his trees because they felt it was unfair for him to have something they didn’t have. To solve the problem, Mr Pitso gave his trees away freely to his neighbors. He also organized tree-planting days at the primary school where he worked and started a tree-buying cooperative to get funds from the government. He showed people how they could make tree-growing profitable by selling fruit and firewood. In times of drought, although he was in his sixties, he carried buckets of water from the small stream to his trees. As we left, Mr Pitso told us that before he died, he hoped to see the barren (贫瘠的) valley around his home covered with trees. When faced with challenges in my life, I remember Mr Pitso’s dream. The poor primary school teacher living in the mountains of Lesotho gives me hope. 24 Why did the author decide to visit Wilfred’s home? A. To help Wilfred plant peach trees. B. To get some firewood for the winter. C. To learn about Wilfred’s living conditions. D. To see Wilfred’s tree-planting efforts. 25. What does the underlined word “resentful” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Confused. B. Careless. C. Annoyed. D. Helpless. 26. Which of the following words best describe Mr Pitso? A. Demanding and high-spirited. B. Caring and strong-willed. C. Creative and self-centered. D. Determined and good-humored. 27. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text? A. To introduce the geography of Lesotho. B. To explain the importance of tree-planting. C. To share a hopeful story about protecting nature. D. To discuss the challenges of teaching abroad. C We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that’s our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them? The butterflies’ eggs lie on the underside of the leaves. The eggs themselves don’t damage plants. However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off. Along with the hypersensitivity response, plants also produce something special, which can attract animals to eat the eggs, thus preventing damage in the future. After the baby butterflies come out of their eggs, the caterpillar (毛虫) stage begins. Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your own garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers. The next stage is pupa (蛹). The caterpillars begin their change into an adult. They don’t depend on the energy that the leaves provide. Finally, they become adult butterflies that have wings and move from one plant to the other. They feed on the sweet liquid produced by flowers. While on their search for food, the butterflies carry pollen (花粉) on their body. They are key pollinators that place pollen from one flower to another in ecosystem. Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators’ attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing. Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages! 28. How does a plant respond to butterflies’ eggs? A. It tries to get rid of them. B. It tries to appeal to them. C. It grows a little better with them. D. It protects them from being eaten. 29. When do butterflies cause the greatest damage to agriculture? A. In the period of egg-laying. B. In the period of pupa. C. In the period of adult. D. In the period of caterpillar. 30. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4? A. Show how flowers attract butterflies. B. Describe the process of pollination. C. Stress the importance of pollination. D. Explore how adult butterflies develop. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. Why do flowers need butterflies’ pollination? B. Are butterflies beneficial or harmful to plants? C. How do plants defend themselves from pests? D. Are butterflies’ life cycles similar to the plants’? D Imagine the last time you concentrated deeply to solve a challenging problem like a math puzzle or a chess move. Little by little, it seemed that your problem effortlessly resolved itself on the mental blackboard of your mind. In recent research, my colleagues and I set out to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying these experiences. Specifically, we sought to understand what occurs within the brain when a person engages in abstract and demanding thought. Previous studies concentrated on brain activity during the brief consideration of problems that take mere seconds to solve. However, our study took a different approach by using more complex math challenges, which are more similar to the tricky puzzles. We recruited 22 university students to join in math programs. They were asked to solve a series of complex math problems while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI 核磁共振) scans which allowed us to observe changes in brain activity as they handled the problems. We found the brain regions associated with math processing were highly active during the task, particularly in those with extensive math expertise Furthermore, as the students deeper researched into the problems, their brains showed increased connectivity between different regions, indicating a heightened state of concentration. The findings could potentially aid scientists in gaining a broader understanding of the power of concentration, which suggest that developing expertise in a particular field can enhance the brain’s ability to concentrate. This may be due to the fact that the brain filters out (滤除) irrelevant information and focuses on the most critical aspects of a problem. Additionally, their extensive experience may have led to the formation of neural pathways that facilitate more efficient problem-solving. In conclusion, our study provides valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying deep concentration and the role of expertise in enhancing this ability. As we continue to explore these phenomena, we may gain a deeper understanding of the cognitive processes that strengthen human performance. 32. What is the main difference of the recent study from previous ones? A. It focuses on easy problems. B. It uses advanced technology. C. It adopts a different strategy. D. It helps solve math challenges. 33. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4? A. The research tool. B. The research process. C. The research basis. D. The research subject. 34. What do the research findings suggest? A. Extensive experience can facilitate problem-solving. B. Our brain can tell the critical information from others. C. With the power of concentration comes higher efficiency. D. Higher expertise can make the brain more focused. 35. What is the purpose of the research? A. To explore the neural mechanisms behind deep concentration. B. To identify the most effective math learning methods. C. To promote the use of MRI scans in neuroscience research. D. To compare the brain activity of math experts and non-experts. Growing up in a Southern family, big meals were the norm. She had prepared much of her savings for Ryan’s college education, so she just took on a part-time job to cover the daily bills. However, Ryan disliked his grandma’s part-time job. She worked as a cleaning lady at a nearby park and he was afraid one of his classmates would see his grandma and think lowly of them. One dayRyan was chosen to act the lead role in a school play. All others acting in the play invited their families to the big opening night, but Ryan was too ashamed to invite his grandma. Unfortunately for him,EIsa saw the flyer (宣传单) of the play while she was cleaning Ryan’s room. That night, when having the dinner in the living room, she talked to Ryan about the flyer, saying she would love to attend. “You won’t be attending, grandma,” he shouted. Hearing that, Elsa wanted to know why. Finally, Ryan broke, “It’s because I don’t want my friends to find out you’re a cleaning lady!“ Elsa was shocked. She was hurt, and couldn’t find the words to respond to her grandson. Instead, she silently went to her room and cried all night long. Little did Ryan know — his grandma kept working because of him. If she had the choice, she would rather stay at home and enjoy her retirement, but she knew she had to make money so that Ryan could continue living comfortably. And although Elsa was sad about Ryan’s behavior, she continued working. Elsa’s legs and back had been experiencing bad pains for long because of her work. C 【解析】 【原文】W: Today’s guest is the author of A Song of Ice and Fire series, now a popular television series called Game of Thrones. Please welcome George R. R. Martin. So George, tell us a bit about your childhood. M: Well, I wasn’t a typical kid. Most of my classmates were into athletics and chasing girls. I mostly kept to myself. W: Were you always interested in writing? M: Yes. I started writing when I was about 10. W: You write a lot about dragons. Did you write about them in your early books as well? M: Actually, I began with writing about my pet turtles. They lived in a castle in my turtle tank. I imagined they were all fighting each other to become the king. W: That sounds a lot like Game of Thrones. M: I had other influences, too. One was the fantasy writer J. R. R. Tolkien. But Stan Lee, the creator of the Spider-Man cartoon books, had the most impact on me. W: In the seventh season of Game of Thrones, there were only seven shows instead of the regular ten. How many will there be for the final season? M: One less than last season. W: Can you tell us the reason? M: Well, you can guess at first. 听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 18. 24. Why did the author decide to visit Wilfred’s home? 【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. 【答案】28. A 29. D 30. A 31. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论了蝴蝶对植物是有益的还是有害的。 【28题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off.(然而,一旦接触到卵,植物就会变得过度敏感。这意味着一旦植物识别出害虫,它就会导致与之接触的植物部分死亡。当这些枯叶或部分叶从植物上脱落时,上面的卵就会脱落。)”可知,植物试图摆脱蝴蝶卵。故选A。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your own garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers.(大多数毛毛虫以植物的叶子为食,在你自己的花园里破坏一些植物。令人难以置信的是,它们是给农民带来重大损失的主要植物害虫。)”可知,蝴蝶的毛毛虫阶段对农业的危害最大。故选D。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators’ attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing.(有花的植物会创造出一些特殊的特征来吸引这些传粉者的注意。某些植物的花朵散发出气味,可以吸引寻找配偶的蝴蝶。有些植物甚至有扁平的花朵来帮助蝴蝶着陆。)”可知,作者在第四段主要展示了花朵如何吸引蝴蝶。故选A。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that’s our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them?”(我们都喜欢蝴蝶。它们美丽的翅膀吸引着我们,它们的出现照亮了我们的花园。好吧,这就是我们对蝴蝶的看法,但是你有没有想过植物是怎么看待它们的?)”和最后一段“Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus, they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages!(蝴蝶在它们最后的成虫阶段帮助授粉。因此,它们变成了植物的益虫。这种变化使蝴蝶成为植物的重要朋友,尽管在以前的生命周期阶段是一个讨厌的敌人!)”可知,文章主要讨论了蝴蝶对植物是有益的还是有害的。故选B。 D Imagine the last time you concentrated deeply to solve a challenging problem like a math puzzle or a chess move. We found the brain regions associated with math processing were highly active during the task, particularly in those with extensive math expertise (专业技能). Furthermore, as the students deeper researched into the problems, their brains showed increased connectivity between different regions, indicating a heightened state of concentration. 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. Every meal for my nuclear family of four provided enough food for eight. Each Sunday, when we drove to my grandmother’s home for lunch, there was more than enough food. ____36____ Having more than enough was a generous and affectionate act; having too little conveyed almost a moral failing. ____37____ When having only another couple over for dinner, I’d make more food than the four of us could finish. My wife always asked me to make less both to save money and because our tiny fridge could hold only so many leftovers. ____38____ When I lost my job, though, my handling of extra food suddenly hit a barrier. ____39____ However, I then quickly went back to my former state of needing to cook much when I landed another job. But instead of cooking a lot and then simply eating the leftovers, I had a new solution that worked well with my belief in showing love through food: ____40____ Several of my friends lived alone, didn’t like cooking or had lost jobs too, so bringing them food helped not only me but also them in a practical way. Such a small act can bring large amounts of joy to anyone in these hard times. And in unfavorable situations, it’s an act that allows us to develop friendship and show love while we must, still, remain apart. A. Continue cooking for my family. B. Bringing the extras as meals to my friends. C. It was the one part of our new world I couldn’t refuse. D. In my adult life before unemployment, this tradition stayed with me. E. In the shock of the change, I cooked less for about a year. F. But doing so seemed contrary to the generosity I had been brought up to believe in. G. Serving extra food was the way that we showed love to one another. 【答案】36. G 37. D 38. F 39. E 40. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了食物从家庭传统到友邻分享的转变,展现了食物如何成为连接与关爱的永恒纽带。 【36题详解】 根据上文“Each Sunday, when we drove to my grandmother’s home for lunch, there was more than enough food.(每个星期天,当我们开车去奶奶家吃午饭时,食物总是绰绰有余。)”可知,此处需解释为何总是准备过量食物,G项直接揭示了其文化内涵——这是家族表达爱的方式。G项:Serving extra food was the way that we showed love to one another.(提供过量的食物是我们向彼此表示爱的方式。)符合语境,G项中的“serving extra food”和上文中的“more than enough food”对应。故选G。 【37题详解】 根据上文“Having more than enough was a generous and affectionate act; having too little conveyed almost a moral failing.(准备得过多是一种慷慨而深情的举动;反之,准备得过少则近乎一种道德上的失责。)”可知,这种以过量食物示爱的做法,已成为作者个人坚守的传统。D项:In my adult life before unemployment, this tradition stayed with me.(在我失业前的成年生活中,这个传统一直伴随着我。)符合语境,D项中的“this tradition”精准指代了这一延续至成年后的家庭习惯。故选D。 【38题详解】 根据上文“My wife always asked me to make less both to save money and because our tiny fridge could hold only so many leftovers.(我的妻子总让我少做一些饭菜,一来是为了省钱,二来也是因为我们的小冰箱装不下太多剩菜。)”可知,妻子的务实建议与作者内心恪守的慷慨传统产生了直接冲突。因此,此处需要一个转折。F项:But doing so seemed contrary to the generosity I had been brought up to believe in.(但这样做似乎有悖于我从小到大所信仰的慷慨。)符合语境,恰当地表达了作者的心理矛盾。故选F。 【39题详解】 根据上文“When I lost my job, though, my handling of extra food suddenly hit a barrier.(然而,失业后,我做多余食物的习惯突然遇到了阻碍。)”可知,空处说明失去工作这种变化对作者对食物的处理产生的影响。E项:In the shock of the change, I cooked less for about a year.(在这种变化的冲击下,我减少了烹饪,大约有一年的时间。)符合语境。故选E。 【40题详解】 根据上文“But instead of cooking a lot and then simply eating the leftovers, I had a new solution that worked well with my belief in showing love through food(然而,我并没有选择大量烹饪后仅仅处理剩菜,而是找到了新的解决方式——这一做法完美契合了我“通过食物传递爱意”的信念)”和下文“Several of my friends lived alone, didn’t like cooking or had lost jobs too, so bringing them food helped not only me but also them in a practical way.(我的一些朋友或独居、或不爱下厨、或同样遭遇失业,因此为他们送去食物不仅在务实层面帮助了他们,也成全了我自己的心意。)”可知,空处应点明这一新方案的具体行动,就是把多余的饭菜带给自己的朋友,B项中的“my friends”和下文中的“several of my friends”对应。B项:Bringing the extras as meals to my friends.(将多余的食物作为餐食带给我的朋友们。)符合语境。故选B。 第三部分 语言知识运用 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项 In the bustling city of Bangalore, India, there was a young woman named Priya who had a natural talent for coding. Since then, his grandma,Elsa, raised him alone, and tried to provide him with everything he needed. When Ryan was 15, his grandma retired from her company. One day,Ryan was chosen to act the lead role in a school play. If she had the choice she would rather stay at home and enjoy her retirement, but she knew she had to make money so that Ryan could continue living comfortably. And although Elsa was sad about Ryan’s behavior, she continued working. Elsa’s legs and back had been experiencing bad pains for long because of her work. And she just secretly took painkillers (止痛药)without telling Ryan about her illness. However, the terrible thing happened. One Sunday morning at home, she found herself unable to stand up. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.开头已给出。 Soon, Ryan found it and rushed her to the hospital. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ryan decided to say sorry to grandma. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Soon, Ryan found it and rushed her to the hospital. Worried and anxious, Ryan waited restlessly outside the emergency room. After what seemed an endless wait, the door opened. Out came the doctor and EIsa in a wheelchair, Ryan was informed Elsa’s illness was just a result of overwork. Luckily, it wasn’t deadly. Ryan let out a sigh of relief. At that moment, memories came flooding back. He recalled everything Grandma had done for him. Realizing Elsa was hiding her pain, he felt regretful about his previous hurtful words. Ryan decided to say sorry to grandma. Turning to her, he knelt down, grasping her hand, and apologized sincerely to her, “Sorry, grandma. I shouldn’t have shouted like that.” Elsa just smiled and comforted him. Days after Elsa felt better, Ryan surprised her by taking her to his school. She was seated in the front row of the school hall. “My performance is for my selfless, hardworking and loving grandma!” Ryan said before they started the play. A wave of applause echoed in the hall, and Elsa was proudly in tears. 词汇激活 行为类 ①意识到:realize/be aware ②道歉:apologize/make an apology ③坐:be seated/sit 情绪类 ①担心:worried/concerned ②自豪:proudly/with pride 【点睛】[高分句型1] After what seemed an endless wait, the door opened.
