COMMUNITY SCIENCE
What is Community Science?
Community science engages the public in scientific inquiry, often cooperating with professional scientists.Discover how it's
practiced in our parks!
About Our Community Science Programs
The Parks Conservancy's community science programs combine landscape-scale research with community involvement and
education.Volunteers help monitor species and ecosystems, filling gaps in our knowledge about local environment. These
programs offer a chance to learn new skills and connect with public lands through participation in science. We couldn't build this
knowledge without our volunteers!
Programs Include:
BioBlitzes:One-day events surveying biodiversity using the iNaturalist platform.
Marin Wildlife Watch:A mountain-wide study using motion-activated cameras to track mammal populations.
California Giant Salamander Inventory:Documenting this rare spccies using crowd-sourced data
Golden Gate Raptor Observatory:A cooperative effort to protect California's raptor populations.
.Bioqucsts:Multi-day campaigns tracking specific spccies, also using iNaturalist
This work is done in partnership with our agency partners, academic institutions, and nonprofit conservation organizations,
which enhances our impact and contributes to global datasets.By participating, you get to leam new skills and contribute to these
important bodics of knowledge about the world.

Once considered crazy by fellow villagers,Indonesian eco-warrior Sadiman has turned barren hills green after 25
years of effort, making water resources available in the drought-prone mountainous region where he lives.
Lovingly addressed as "grandpa",the 72-year-old has worked continuously to plant trees in the hills of central Java after
fires intended to clear the land for farming nearly dried up its rivers and lakes.
"I thought to myself,if I don't plant trees, this area would become dry,"said Sadiman,an average old man like many
Indonesians,.“And in my experience,banyan trees(榕树)and ficus trees(无花果树)can store a lot of water..”
Thanks to his efforts, springs have formed where once there was barren and dry land, with their water piped to homes and
used to irrigate()farms.The long and widespread roots of at least 11,000 banyan and ficus trees,Sadiman has planted over
617 acres help to hold groundwater and prevent land erosion ()
Yet at the beginning, few village residents appreciated his work.
"People blamed me for bringing banyan tree seeds to the village because they felt uneasy as they believed there were spirits
in these trees,"Sadiman added.
"Some even thought he was a bad man because he traded the goats he raised for young trees,"said one villager,Warto
"In the past, people thought he was crazy, but look at the result now-Lack of rain in the area where he planted trees had once
limited farmers to a single harvest a year, but now,the plentiful water sources ensure two or three."
Sadiman also funds his work through a nursery of plants such as cloves and Jackfruit, that he can sell or trade."I hope
people here can have wealthy lives and live happily. And don't burn the forest over and over again,"Sadiman added, with a
twinkle io his cye.
24 Why did Sadiman plant banyan and ficus trees over the mountain?
A.To prevent land crosion.
B.To drive away wild animals.

D.To clear the land for farming.
25.What does the underlined word "uneasy"in the 6th paragraph mean?
A.Excited.
B.Nervous.
C.Grateful.
D.Confused.
26.How did Sadiman fund his trec-planting work?
A.He used the income from his farm.
B.Re asked villagers for financial help.
C.He sold or traded plants from his nursery.D.He got donations from environmental groups.
27.What can we infer about the impact of Sadiman's work?
A.It made him become a wealthy man.
B.It caused conflicts between him and the villagers.
C.It helped increase the local farmers'harvest times.
D.It made the local rivers and lakes completely dry up.

In a society that values productivity,it is rare that people just sit back and do nothing. However, nowadays many youngsters
are tuming to doing absolutely nothing all day in a trend known as "bed rotting"
"Bed rotting refers to doing nothing aside from lying in bed and relaxing,"says Kristin Gill,a psychiatrist."It's a term
that young people have coined to describe taking a step back from their busy lives and giving themselves time to recharge their
batteries.”
"It's normal and healthy for people to take time to rest and unplug from the world around them,"Doctor Gill says."This
can actually help people recharge their social battery and physically rest their bodies,so they are better suited to do with what lies
ahead.”
Another benefit of“bed rotting”includes taking a step back from hustle culture(奋斗文化)and simply being more present.
"Just saying I'm going to do nothing today'or 'I'm going to take a rest today'can be very empowering to people in the
society where they feel guilty for resting and taking breaks."Dr.Gill says.
However, too much "bed rotting"can hurt more than it helps.
"Staying in bed for long periods of time can be a form of avoidance and potentially lead to isolation,"says Justin Puder,a
osychologist."Periods of loneliness can help us reset, but long periods of isolation are linked to depression.Additionally, staying
in our comfort zone for days on end can increase our anxiety when we have to leave for work, school or social meetups."
Puder adds it's also important to vary your environment and get out of your house every day, even if only for an hour or two.
Aside from potentially affecting your mental health,"bed rotting"may also negatively impact your sleeping. When you
spend too much time in bed outside of your typical sleeping time, your brain is more likely to confuse sleep and wakefulness. This
may decrease your overall sleep quality and potentially lead to insomnia().
2
To sum up.bed rotting can be beneficial if integrated into your life in a healthy and balanced way. However, you still
want to find other bealthy coping mechansms to deal with the daily stresses, whether that's going on a solo date to a coffee shop
or taking a hike in nature.
28.Wbat docs bed rotting mcan according to Kristin Gill?
A.Remnining at homc to avoid social intcractions.
B.Lying in bed doing nothing but relax and recharge.
C.Staying indoors to dcal with depression and anxiety.
D.Spending extra time in bed to improve slcep quality.
29.What can we infer from Dr.Gill's words about "bed rotting"?
A.It will finally replace other rest mcthods.
B.It fits young people better than the elderly.
C.It needs at least one full day to take effect.
D It helps reduce guilt about resting in hustle culture.
30.Why does Justin Puder suggest getting out of the house daily?
A.To maintain a good and stable social network.
B.To avoid long-term isolation and increased anxiety.
C.To find more effective approaches to resting oursclves.
D.To prevent the brain from mixing sleep and wakefulness.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Bed Rotting:Benefits and Risks to Consider
B.Bed Rotting:A New Trend for Youngsters
C.Bed Rotting:A Proper Way to Rest Yourself
D.Bed Rotting:Hidden Dangers to People's Health

Scientists have created a new kind of paint that is super light and super tough. The colors in the new paint aren't at all like
those in most paints.Instead, they are more like the colors on a butterfly's wings.
For hundreds of years, humans have been mixing different minerals, metals or chemicals together to produce different colors
of paint. But nature has another way to create color, called "structural color".Structural color comes from tiny shapes on the
surfaces of things like wings, feathers or shells.Normally,we never see the shapes that create these colors because they are so tiny.
Researchers were trying to create a special mirrored surface, but they found super tiny masses of aluminum()atoms on the
surface. The researchers were upsct at first because these tiny masses messed up the mirror. Then they realized that these tiny
masses made colors when light hit them.Thev decided to tum this discovery into paint
All the colors in the new paint come from aluminum. There are tiny aluminum flakes and then even tinier, nanoparticles(
)that create the colors. The nanoparticles don't really produce the color. They simply reflect back a single color. The size of
the nanoparticles determines which color gets reflected.
Because new paint doesn't have pigments(颜料,色素),the paint is extremely light The paint is so light that it could reduce
the amoum of fuel used by planes and cars.Normally,it takes about 500 kilograms of paint to cover a Boeing 747 airplane. It
woud only ke 1.3 kilograms of this kind of structural paint to do the same job.
n regular pain, pigments break down and fade over time. That's not true for structural color."Once we paint something
with structural color,it should stay for centuries,"says Dr.Chanda.
What's more, the new paint doesn't beat up like a regular paint. That's true even for dark colors. The new paint can keep the
surface up to 16-6-degrees Celsius cooler than normal paint.Using the paint on buildings in cities could help cool cities and reduce
electricity spent on air conditioning.

A Rainy Day Rescue
The afternoon sky tumed dark suddenly, and heavy rain poured down without warning.Xiao Ming,a senior two studcnt, was
riding his bike home.He pedaled hard, trying to reach home before the rain got worse, but the road soon became slippery. The
raindrops hit his face like small needles, and his vision got a little unclear,so he had to slow down and focus on the road ahead.
As he passed the old alley near the school,,he heard a faint whimper(受惊动物的鸣咽).Curious,he stopped his bike and
walked carefully into the alley. There, under a broken shelter,he saw a small, wet dog trembling. Its fur was soaked, sticking to its
4
thin body, and it looked scared, shrinking into a ball to keep warm.Xiao Ming's heart softened-he'd always loved animals but his
parents were too busy to let him keep one.
He took off his school uniform jacket and gently wrapped it around the dog.The dog stopped whimpering and pushed his
hand with its cold nose,as if seeking comfort.Xiao Ming looked at the pouring rain and then at the little dog.The shelter above
them was leaking, and the rain was starting to wet his shirt He knew he couldn't leave the little dog there alone, but how could he
take it home without his parents'permission? They'd always said taking care of a pet would distract him from his preparations for
the College Entrance Examination.
Just as he was thinking, his phonc rang.It was his mom, asking when he'd be home.Xiao Ming hesitated for a moment, then
told her the truth about the dog-how small it was,how scared it looked, and how he couldn't bear to leave it in the rain. There was
a pause on the other end of the phone, and Xiao Ming held his breath, waiting for her reply, his fingers gently stroking the dog's
wet fur to calm both the pet and himself.
