A
Climate change could have large impacts on food production across the world. Rising temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO2 in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures.
Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways:
Farmers can change WHAT they plant. This could be an entirely different type of crop: corn instead of wheat. Or a different variety of a specific crop.
FOUR KEY WAYS
Farmers can change WHERE crops are planted. If temperatures rise in fall, crop production can shift north or southwards towards more suitable temperatures.
Farmers can change HOW crops are managed. Giving crops the right amount of water, nutrition, and protection from insects and disease can help reduce some impacts of climate change.
Farmers can change WHEN they plant. Farmers can plant earlier or later in the year, depending on when spring arrives. Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work.
A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn, rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat.
These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure cannot adapt to climate change this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future.
1. What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour?
A. WHAT. B. WHERE. C. HOW. D. WHEN.
2. Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties?
A. Rice. B. Corn. C. Sorghum. D. Wheat.
3. What should be done in the future?
A. To adopt the three methods. B. To help the farmers in need.
C To focus on crop production. D. To move to colder regions.
根据表格中WHEN部分“Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work. (调整种植日期无需额外投入成本或增加工作量。)”可知,如果农民资金和劳动力短缺,可选择调整种植时间。故选D。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO2 in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures. (小麦和水稻——得益于大气中二氧化碳含量的增加 —— 产量可能会有所提升,而玉米和高粱则会因气温升高导致产量下降。)”和灰色柱状图中的最高数值是Rice的15%可知,在仅改变作物品种的情况下,稻米(Rice)的产量增幅是最大的。故选A。
根据最后一段“If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future.(如果特定地区的农民——特别是那些粮食最不安全的地区——无法适应气候变化,这仍然是一个主要问题。因此,未来我们还可以做更多。)”可知,未来应该帮助有需要的农民,特别是那些粮食最不安全的地区的农民。故选B。

Working in Southeast Asia for a European company comes with plenty of cross-border differences and challenges. Time zones and public holidays are obvious mismatches. But it’s email that causes the real headache.
Living in Bangkok, I jump between Line, a popular instant communication application, and Gmail, an email service platform, and sometimes get tangled up in the middle, missing emails considered urgent in one timezone and sending emails considered unnecessary in the other. I arrived at a meeting in the Thai capital recently to find that the email I had sent from the taxi to excuse my traffic-related lateness had become a point of discussion around the water cooler. “He sent an email to explain that he was going to be five minutes late? How sweet.” Embarrassment aside, it was a useful reminder of Southeast Asian norms and expectations. Pretty much everyone is late for meetings in Bangkok, so only serious delays require a message-and email is reserved for emergency cancellations.
When my colleagues from London came to visit, I had to explain communication preferences to them. “You need to download Line from Application Store.” Over here, email feels awkward and business-like and more formal: the modern equivalent of a dusty Post Office box that gets checked and cleared into the dustbin every now and again. But Line suits this part of the world, where communication is personal, relationship-based.
There are drawbacks, of course. Line IDs are often nicknames or emojis so finding old contacts can demand either a sharp memory or a lot of scrolling. There is no real system for saving messages either, which means the HR and legal teams in London and Paris are often concerned.
However, relying less on email does not mean we abandon a rules-based system. Changing status “On holiday” works just like a regular out-of-office email and formal things are done in person with a paper record.
The world might feel smaller thanks to technology, but cultural differences in communication continue to exist, serving as a constant source of freshness and moments of insight for those who venture abroad. It’s part of what makes travelling and working abroad so rewarding.
4. What does the author find the most challenging?
A. Traveling between time zones. B. Arranging proper holidays.
C. Sending work emails. D. Downloading Line.
5. Why did the author’s email become a point of discussion?
A. It was sent to the wrong person. B. It was considered needless by people.
C. It contained embarrassing information. D. It was canceled at the last minute.
6. Why does the author mention the “dusty Post Office box”?
A. To illustrate email is too official and rarely-used. B. To describe the charm of traditional mail service.
C. To emphasize the trouble of checking dusty mails. D. To explain the development of communication tools.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards cultural differences in communication?
A. Critical and worried. B. Indifferent and neutral.
C. Positive and appreciative. D. Confused and frustrated.
C 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第二段中“I arrived at a meeting in the Thai capital recently to find that the email I had sent from the taxi to excuse my traffic-related lateness had become a point of discussion around the water cooler. “He sent an email to explain that he was going to be five minutes late? How sweet.” Embarrassment aside, it was a useful reminder of Southeast Asian norms and expectations. Pretty much everyone is late for meetings in Bangkok, so only serious delays require a message-and email is reserved for emergency cancellations.(我最近在泰国首都参加一场会议时,发现自己从出租车发出的那封因交通拥堵致歉迟到的邮件,竟成了茶水间的讨论话题。“他居然特意发邮件解释会迟到五分钟?太可爱了。”尴尬之余,这件事让我重新意识到东南亚的行为准则与社交期待——在曼谷,会议迟到本是常态,唯有严重延误才需告知,而邮件通常仅用于紧急取消场合)”和可知,作者的邮件成为讨论的焦点是因为人们认为这种小事发邮件没有必要。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Over here, email feels awkward and business-like and more formal: the modern equivalent of a dusty Post Office box that gets checked and cleared into the dustbin every now and again.(在这里,电子邮件显得既尴尬又商务化,过于正式——就像现代版积灰的邮政信箱,偶尔被查看后便直接清空进垃圾桶)”可知,作者提到“积满灰尘的邮局信箱”是为了说明电子邮件在东南亚地区显得过于正式且很少被使用。故选A项。
根据最后一段“The world might feel smaller thanks to technology, but cultural differences in communication continue to exist, serving as a constant source of freshness and moments of insight for those who venture abroad. Sunscreen is a literal lifesaver for humans, protecting us from dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线) and skin cancer. However, the same cannot be said for its effects on marine life. Every year, thousands of tons of commercial sunscreens wash off swimmers and wind up in the planet’s oceans. Studies indicate that the chemicals from commercial sunscreens can cause pollution and lead to coral bleaching, threatening marine habitat.
Drawing inspiration from nature, material scientists at Nanyang Technological University have developed the world’s first pollen-based sunscreen to address this critical issue. Pollen (花粉) grains have evolved strong outer layers that safeguard their internal components against unfavorable environmental conditions, including intense UV rays. Crucially, this natural protective characteristic remains effective during extraction, making pollen a safer, eco-conscious sunscreen alternative.
Unlike commercial sunscreens that rely on harmful chemicals, the pollen-based sunscreen adopts a gentle, eco-friendly production process, using pollen’s naturally tough shell to form a lightweight natural microgel (微凝胶) that acts as a UV barrier. Laboratory tests confirm it achieves a sun protection factor (SPF) of about 30, blocking approximately 97% of UV rays. This matches the protection level of commercial alternatives, while being far gentler for sensitive skin.
Beyond its eco-friendliness, the pollen sunscreen offers cooling benefits even during peak UV hours (10 a.m. — 4 p.m.). In tests, skin treated with the pollen sunscreen stayed up to 5℃ cooler for as long as 20 minutes under intense UV radiation of 3200 μW/cm2, a level typical of midday summer sunlight. This cooling effect arises from pollen’s natural trait of absorbing less heat, which addresses the overheating discomfort common with regular sunscreens.
Despite its advantages and UV protection meeting commercial standards, the product remains unavailable to consumers. As Cho Nam-Joon, the study’s leading author, emphasized, “Official approvals and additional tests on its sustained reliability under various storage conditions are necessary before market launch.” This required process delays its arrival on store shelves, even as the pollen-based sunscreen shows great potential for reducing chemical pollution and protecting both human health and marine life.
8. What is the problem with commercial sunscreen?
A. The risk of skin cancer.
B. The threat to marine ecosystems.
C. The difficulty in washing off.
D. The inefficiency of UV protection.
9. What distinguishes the pollen-based sunscreens from commercial ones?
A. Its natural ingredients. B. Its high SPF value.
C. Its chemical substances. D. Its skin-repair ability.
10. What does the underlined word “trait” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Temper. B. Task.
C. Taste. D. Characteristic.
11. What is the focus of the last paragraph regarding the pollen sunscreen?
A. Outlook for its market performance.
B. Procedures of its official approval.
C. Significance of its reliability tests.
D. Factors for its delayed launch.
B 9. A 10. D 11. D

根据第一段中的句子“Studies indicate that the chemicals from commercial sunscreens can cause pollution and lead to coral bleaching, threatening marine habitat. (研究表明,商用防晒霜中的化学物质会造成污染,导致珊瑚白化,威胁海洋栖息地。)”可知,商用防晒霜的问题是威胁海洋生态系统。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“Drawing inspiration from nature, material scientists at Nanyang Technological University have developed the world’s first pollen-based sunscreen to address this critical issue. Pollen (花粉) grains have evolved strong outer layers that safeguard their internal components against unfavorable environmental conditions, including intense UV rays. Crucially, this natural protective characteristic remains effective during extraction, positioning pollen as a safer, eco-conscious sunscreen alternative. (受自然启发,南洋理工大学的材料科学家开发出世界上第一种基于花粉的防晒霜,以解决这一关键问题。花粉颗粒已经进化出强大的外层,保护其内部成分免受不利环境条件的影响,包括强烈的紫外线。至关重要的是,这种天然保护特性在提取过程中仍然有效,使花粉成为一种更安全、更环保的防晒霜替代品。)”和第三段中的句子“Unlike commercial sunscreens that rely on harmful chemicals, the pollen-based sunscreen adopts a gentle, eco-friendly production process, using pollen’s naturally tough shell to form a lightweight natural microgel (微凝胶) that acts as a UV barrier. (与依赖有害化学物质的商业防晒霜不同,这款基于花粉的防晒霜采用温和、环保的生产工艺,利用花粉天然坚固的外壳形成一种轻质的天然微凝胶,起到紫外线屏障的作用。)”可知,花粉基防晒霜与商用防晒霜的区别在于其天然成分。故选A项。
根据上文的内容““Beyond its eco-friendliness, the pollen sunscreen offers cooling benefits even during peak UV hours (10 a.m. — 4 p.m.). In tests, skin treated with the pollen sunscreen stayed up to 5℃ cooler for as long as 20 minutes under intense UV radiation of 3200 μW/cm2, a level typical of midday summer sunlight.
根据最后一段“Despite its advantages and UV protection meeting commercial standards, the product remains unavailable to consumers.
D
In work and in life, we are constantly taught that acting early ensures success. Yet after years of studying originals, I have found that the advantages of acting quickly are often outweighed by the downsides. It’s true the early bird gets the worm, but we can’t forget the early worm gets caught.
Recently, researcher Jihae Shin tested an unconventional idea: procrastination (拖延) might boost originality. Shin asked participants to propose business for a college empty lot left by a convenience store. When they started the task immediately, they tended to propose conventional ideas-like another convenience store. When Shin randomly assigned some participants to delay the task to play computer games, they generated more novel ideas, like a tutoring center or a storage facility. Further experiments showed neither playing games nor taking a break boosted creativity. Shin concluded that when you procrastinate a task, you buy yourself time for divergent (发散的) thinking rather than “seizing and freezing” on one particular strategy.
Procrastination may be the enemy of productivity, but it can be a resource for creativity. Ancient civilizations recognized this long before the Industrial Revolution’s efficiency fever. In ancient Egypt, there were two different verbs for procrastination: one meant laziness; the other meant waiting for the right time.
In a classic study, marketing researcher Peter Golder analyzed hundreds of brands, comparing pioneering companies to slower settlers entering after pioneers created markets. The result was striking: pioneers failed at six times the rate of settlers.
Settlers are often labelled as copycats (盲目的模仿者), but this stereotype misses the mark. Instead of meeting the existing demand, they wait until they’re ready to introduce something new. They’re often slow to enter because they’re working on revolutionary products, services, or technologies within the category. For instance, in home video-game handles, the pioneer was Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, which mostly featured basic sports games. A settler, Nintendo, acquired the Odyssey’s distribution rights for Japan in 1975, and then blew Magnavox out of the water in the following decade by creating an original Nintendo Entertainment System. It transformed gaming with a user-friendly controller, advanced characters, and interactive role-playing.
12. Which of the following best shows Shin’s finding?
A. Strike while the iron is hot.
B. He who hesitates is lost.
C. More speed, less effect.
D. No pains, no gains.
13. What’s the key to participants’ generating novel ideas?
A. Delaying the task.
B. Taking a long break.
C. Playing computer games.
D. Being assigned to a creative group.
14. How does the author explain settlers’ success?
A. By listing statistics.
B. By designing a test.
C. By presenting a concept.
D. By providing an example.
15. Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?
A. Seize the Day: The Early Bird Principle!
B. Unlock Originality: Please Wait a Moment.
C. The War of Innovation: Pioneers VS. Settlers.
D. The Secret to Success: Delaying or Not Delaying?
C 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据文章第二段中的“When they started the task immediately, they tended to propose conventional ideas-like another convenience store.
根据第二段的“Recently, researcher Jihae Shin tested an unconventional idea: procrastination (拖延) might boost originality. (最近,研究人员辛哈埃·申提出了一种不同寻常的观点:拖延或许能够激发创造力。)”和“Further experiments showed neither playing games nor taking a break boosted creativity. Shin concluded that when you procrastinate a task, you buy yourself time for divergent (发散的) thinking rather than “seizing and freezing” on one particular strategy.(进一步的实验表明,玩游戏或休息都不能提高创造力。Shin总结说,当你拖延一项任务时,你为自己赢得了进行发散性思维的时间,而不是“抓住并固定”在某一个特定的策略上。)”可知,研究者最终的结论将产生新颖想法的关键归因于“拖延任务”这一行为本身,因为它为“发散思维”争取了时间,避免了过早锁定单一策略。故选A。
根据最后一段的“Settlers are often labelled as copycats (盲目的模仿者), but this stereotype misses the mark.
A piercing (刺耳的) alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. ____16____. Here are some suggestions to improve your chances.
____17____.
If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise (高层的) apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits.
Don’t panic
An unexpected fire alarm will be scary, but try to stay calm. Keep a clear head and try to figure out whether the fire is above you, below you, or on your floor. Then feel the door to your unit. If it is cool, you should be able to leave your apartment and head for the nearest exit. If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. ____18____.
Get down to the floor
The primary killer in a fire is smoke, not the heat or flames. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you do so by crawling on all fours. Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. ____19____. This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe.
Never attempt to jump
Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. ____20____. They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you.
A. Do your research
B. Update emergency procedures
C. It picks up first responders at ground level
D. Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth
E. The good news is that today’s high-rises are built for fire safety
F. By doing so, you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning
G. If you’re in a burning high-rise apartment, your choices determine whether you survive
G 17. A 18. F 19. D 20. E
由上文“A piercing alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. (一阵刺耳的警报声将你从甜美的睡梦中惊醒。但发出警报的不是你的闹钟——而是你所住的大楼着火了。)”及下文“Here are some suggestions to improve your chances. (以下是一些能提高你生存几率的建议。)”可知,上句描述高层着火的危机场景,下句引出逃生建议,选项G“If you’re in a burning high-rise apartment, your choices determine whether you survive (如果你正身处一栋着火的高层公寓,你的抉择将决定自己能否幸存)”起到承上启下的作用,点明“高层着火时,选择决定生死”的核心,自然衔接下文的建议,该选项中的“a burning high-rise apartment”与上文的“building is on fire”相呼应。故选G。
由下文“If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits. 故选A。
由上文“If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. (离开时,切记关上身后所有的门。)”可知,上文提到“关门”的动作,空处需解释关门的原因,选项F“By doing so, you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning (这样做可以避免为火势提供更多氧气,防止火势进一步蔓延)”解释了关门可以避免给火势提供更多氧气助燃,逻辑连贯。该选项中的“By doing so”指代前文的“be sure to close all the doors behind you”。故选F。
由上文“Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. (贴着地面爬行,因为可供呼吸的空气往往集中在靠近地面的位置。)”及下文“This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe. (这能帮助你在呼吸时过滤掉烟雾中的有害物质。)”可知,上文讲“匍匐避烟”的方法,下文讲“这有助于在呼吸时过滤烟雾”,选项D“Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth (与此同时,用湿布捂住口鼻)”补充了另一个防烟措施,下文的“This”指代该选项的“use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth”,语义衔接紧密。故选D。
由上文“Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. (切勿从二楼以上的任何楼层跳楼逃生。待在室内等待救援人员到来,你的生存几率会更高。尽管在火灾发生时,待在原地等待看似很不合理,但慌乱之下做出的决定往往会导致无法挽回的后果。)”及下文“They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you. (这些大楼采用了防火材料,还配备了自动喷水灭火装置、警报器和应急语音广播系统,为你指引逃生方向。)”可知,上文建议“待在室内”,下文说明高楼的防火设计,选项E“The good news is that today’s high-rises are built for fire safety (好消息是,如今的高层建筑都是按照消防安全标准建造的)”起到过渡作用,点明“如今的高楼是为消防安全而建”,解释了“等待救援更安全”的原因。

故填depth/depths。
故填a。

故填is rooted。
此处为固定搭配not just...but...,意为“不仅……而且……”,用连词but。故填but。
故填who。

The line of annoyed customers snaked around the counter. With just two shopping days before Christmas, most were in panic mode. One was my husband, Dale, a no-nonsense shopper who depends on fast service because every minute counts as the countdown before Christmas continues. But the service was anything but fast.
Behind Dale, a young mother rocked a restless baby on her hip while clutching several brightly wrapped boxes. Ahead of him, a man in a long coat checked his phone repeatedly and sighed heavily, the rhythmic tap of his polished shoe against the floor marking the dragging seconds. Two teenagers, weighed down by oversized shopping bags, exchanged exaggerated eye-rolls and muttered under their breath about the endless delay. It was a collective will for the line to finally move.
The problem was an elderly lady at the front, chatting happily to the salesgirl. “This sweater is for my granddaughter, a future teacher,” she explained, proceeding to share family details. On and on she talked, slowly counting her change, unaware of the frustrated line behind her. When she finally zipped her purse shut and picked up her parcel, the clerk signaled to the next man.
“Thank you, dearie,” said the lady as she started to move slowly away, checking the contents of her shopping bag. She was almost to the end of the counter when suddenly she turned back. “Oops! Excuse me.” she cried, holding up a piece of paper. A ripple of visible impatience ran through the crowd.
“What’s this for?” she asked.
“It’s a discount coupon (优惠券) that will give you 15 percent off your next purchase here at the store, from now until the end of January,” replied the weary salesgirl.
“Well, thank you, but I won’t be needing this,” she beamed. “Here, you can use it right now!” she said, handing it to the man next in line. The man’s eyes widened, and he mumbled a word of thanks as she walked slowly to the door.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
As the man stepped up to the counter, an amazing thing happened.

This chain reaction of kindness completely transformed the atmosphere in the store.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As the man stepped up to the counter, an amazing thing happened. After using the coupon from the elderly lady, he received a new one from the clerk. Without hesitation, he turned and handed it to the teenagers behind him. They, in turn, passed it forward after their own purchase. By the time the coupon reached Dale, a quiet warmth had begun to soften his impatience. When his transaction was complete, he instinctively turned and offered his newly received coupon to the young mother behind him. And so it continued down the line — one small, selfless gesture rippling through the weary queue, dissolving frustration into shared goodwill.
This chain reaction of kindness completely transformed the atmosphere in the store. The earlier tension melted away, replaced by soft murmurs and even occasional laughter. The weary salesgirl now smiled genuinely as she served each customer. Near the door, two strangers exchanged cheerful “Merry Christmas” wishes. What had been a tense queue of strangers became a temporary community, woven together by an unspoken, generous rhythm. Walking out into the crisp evening, Dale carried more than a gift — he held a deep contentment.

A
Climate change could have large impacts on food production across the world.
C. To focus on crop production. D. To move to colder regions.
B
Working in Southeast Asia for a European company comes with plenty of cross-border differences and challenges. Time zones and public holidays are obvious mismatches. But it’s email that causes the real headache.
Living in Bangkok I jump between Line, a popular instant communication application, and Gmail, an email service platform, and sometimes get tangled up in the middle, missing emails considered urgent in one timezone and sending emails considered unnecessary in the other.

A. Temper. B. Task.
C. Taste. D. Characteristic.

A. Outlook for its market performance.
B. Procedures of its official approval.
C. Significance of its reliability tests.
D. Factors for its delayed launch.

Settlers are often labelled as copycats (盲目模仿者), but this stereotype misses the mark.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
As the man stepped up to the counter, an amazing thing happened.
