参考范文
I really wanted those sneakers,yet I knew Mrs.Thompson was in a tough spot.Alex
kept looking at me with begging eyes.I felt so torn,my mind full of a mix of guilt and
longing. The picture of the cool sneakers kept appearing in my head, but so did Mrs.
Thompson's sad expression. After what seemed like a really long time of struggling inside
myself,I took a deep breath and nodded at Alex.We quickly figured out how much money we
could give without using up all our savings.
With hearts beating fast,we walked up to Mrs.Thompson with some savings. When we
held out the money to her,her eyes opened wide in shock. We told her it was the least we
could do and we hoped she could soon go through the hard time. Her thankfulness was really
strong, and she gave us both a big hug.In that moment,I realized that the happiness of
helping her was much greater than the short-lived excitement of getting those sneakers. The
experience taught me that real value isn't in things we own but in the relationships we make
and the kindness we show.

Can you imagine your life without any money? Not even a cent? One man decided to try it out.
Mark Boyle was a successful manager of an organic food company in Ireland. He had a good life. But he
worried about the damage humans were doing to the environment. He also believed people bought more things
than they needed.Boyle wished we grew our own food and made our own furniture,so we wouldn't waste as
much as we do today. So one day,he left his job and started an experiment-could he live for a year without
buying anything?
He sold his houseboat and moved into an old mobile home.He got it for free from a website where people
give away things they don't want.It wasn't as comfortable as his old place at first, but he soon made it feel like
home.He parked it on a farm near Bristol,England.Instead of paying rent,he worked on the farm.He burned
wood from the forest to heat his home,so he didn't pay electricity or gas bills.

Boyle didn't go shopping, either. He grew his own fruit and vegetables. He also looked for food in the
garbage cans of supermarkets and cooked it on a wood stove. He made his own toothpaste(from fish bones
and seeds. To wash his clothes,he used a special type of nut to make soap.Boyle even built his own toilet and
used old newspapers from the farm for toilet paper.
He began using money again after eighteen months. He says his life change made him feel healthier,
happier, and closer to nature. He wrote two books about his experience and used the money to start "The Free
House",a farm in Ireland where people can live without money.

At a recycling center, two team members spend all day pulling items from a conveyor belt covered in
garbage().One pulls out juice cartons and plastic bottles that can be reprocessed, while the other searches
for pollutants in the stream of paper products. They are AI-powered robots that each look like a supercharged
mechanical arm.Yes,even reeycling has gotten involved in the AIrevolution.
In theory, materials recovery facilities(MRFs)gather the wastes, sort them out,and then sell the materials
to companies that can reuse them.In practice, the MRFs aren't all that good. The issue is that it's long been too
hard for recycling plants to sort materials with the level of specificity needed to reuse them. The traditional
recycling methods succeed in separating waste into broad categories of paper, glass, and metal. But finer layers
of detail often go unnoticed, especially with plastic. It's hard for recyclers to determine whether, say,a
container is a milk container or a pesticide()container.
AI stands to make a change, giving recycling plants a far more detailed view into packaging. The AI-
powered recycling robots are "vision systems":In the same way ChatGPT is trained, they ingest lots of
photographs of thrown-away items in various states of damage. The robots are then able to identify even tiny
differences in a product's color, shape, texture,or logo.Recycling operators said that traditional systems tend
to be 85 to 95 percent accurate, while robotics companies claim up to 99 percent accuracy.
That is not to say that the turn to AI has already fixed recycling. The high-tech systems won't come
cheap-an individual robot can cost as much as $300,000.Even if costs eventually decrease, recycling robots
can't change the fact that recycling, even at its best,is just not a particularly efficient way of dealing with single
use products. From a perspective focused on plastic pollution, what's better than a recyclable single-use cup is
not using one at all.

Curiosity-the desire to know,to discover,to learn.Inspired by curiosity,humans are found everywhere
on our planet, and beyond it in space.Yet according to human behaviourist and author of Curious,Ian Leslie,
although we are all born curious, not all of us bring this into adulthood, and we can lose out as a result.
As Leslie explains, curiosity shapes us from the start.By trying new things,we build knowledge, and want
to know more."We are born aware that we don't know stuff-we want to experience and discover."However,
the contrast between childhood and adulthood is clear."We ask 40,000 questions a year between the ages of two
and five,"says Leslie-around 110 each day:adults,in comparison,ask just 20.
As we get older,we may feel hesitant about asking questions, believing this reveals gaps in our knowledge.
We can become scared to share unconventional ideas for fear of criticism or misunderstanding. We can also be a
victim of our success,as Leslie explains."Once you've worked out how to do your job, then you don't feel
curious anymore. The need to learn goes away-in a way, curiosity has done its job.But that doesn't mean you
shouldn't cultivate it.
Leslie's tips for cultivating curiosity begin with spending time with the experts-children."Talk to your
kids, and try to answer those weird, difficult questions they have-like 'What is air?'This makes you think
about things you've taken for granted-it reawakens your curiosity in what's around us and how we perceive the
world.”
So does finding what Leslie calls an "informal mentor",through work or other circles, who is happy to
share their expertise, from a skill, technology,to a field of learning."Try to think of people the way children
think of adults-as sources of secret knowledge,a great store of learning you can tap into,"says Leslie.
Leslie also suggests creating a"spark file"-a digital or physical notebook in which you collect interesting
thoughts."Fill it with facts you've come across, sentences you like, insights that strike you.Let it be random.
And let it build.Over time you'll build up a rich source of inspiration,and you'll think,'Oh that's interesting.
That relates to this...'And suddenly your mind starts firing away with new ideas and ways of thinking."

One of the most important keys is making sure that kids are getting the message you're trying to send.
When you communicate with kids, sometimes the way instructions are given can be just as important as what
you're trying to communicate.36
Be direct.Make statements rather than asking questions."Please turn right,"as opposed to "Are you ready
to finish your homework?"
37 Give instructions when you are near the child, rather than calling out from across the room.
Use clear and specific commands(命令).Instead of“Go ahead,”say,“Please turn right at the second
crossing.”
Give instructions one at a time.38"Please put on your coat, get your lunch off the kitchen counter,
and meet me in the front door.
Keep explanations easy.Giving a rationale()can increase the likelihood children will listen to a
command.For example,"Go get your coat on because it's raining.39 Instead,try:"It's raining and I
don't want you to catch a cold.Go get your coat on.
Give kids time to process. After you give an instruction, wait a few seconds, without repeating what you
said. They don't need to listen.40 Watching and waiting also helps keep adults from doing what weve
requested of our kids for them.
A.Be close.
B.Don't give them one by one.
C.I don't want you to catch a cold.
D.Do shout out as loudly as possible.
E Try to avoid giving instructions all together.
F.This is because the instructions will be repeated.

Yesterday,my friend Alex and I noticed our next-door neighbor,Mrs.Thompson, looking unusually

be in a hurry.
We decided to ask if she needed any help.As we walked over, she was struggling to carry a large box.I

Over the next few hours,Alex and I helped her load more boxes into her car.We listened as she shared
stories full of love about her husband and the life they had together. It was clear that this was a very emotional
time for her.Mrs.Thompson thanked us for the timely help, and for a moment, her face seemed to relax a bit.
However, later in the day, things took a turn.As we were about to leave,we overheard Mrs.Thompson on
the phone. She was arguing with someone about money. It seemed that there were some unexpected bills related
to the storage unit, and she was worried about how she would pay them.
Alex immediately suggested that we pool our savings to help her,but I hesitated.I had been saving up for
