What can a seal (海豹) teach us about the deep ocean? A lot.
“Deep-diving (深潜的) seals provide us with much information on the sea,” says Clive McMahon. He works for a sea science group in Sydney, and he also works with the Australian Center for Excellence in Antarctic Science.
“Geography and terrible weather make it difficult for humans to study in Antarctica. In the past, people only studied a small part of the sea around, so the information about this area was sparse,” Clive McMahon says.
To know more about the sea, McMahon’s team started an animal tagging (标签) research project in the east sea around Antarctica. They stuck special tags on seals and studied them for 9 years. The tags could collect information about the sea as the seals dived.
“The information from seals is so valuable. It shows that something was wrong. For example, in some areas, the seals swam 1,000 meters deeper down than what we thought was the sea floor,” McMahon shares.
The information also showed new underwater characteristics. It helps us better understand the shape of the sea floor, including ice shelf cavities (冰架洞). Warm water can go through the cavities and reach the ice shelves. Then it melts (融化) the ice. “So if we find out where the warm water enters the underside of the shelves, we’ll better know about how fast the ice shelves melt, how much fresh water goes into the sea, and many other things that may change our future sea and weather,” he adds.
23.What does McMahon mainly study?
A.Weather and plants. B.Wild animals on land. C.Sea and Antarctic science.
24.What does the underlined word “sparse” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.秘密的 B.稀少的 C.复杂的
25.What did the information from seals show?
A.A true and new sea world.
B.The future sea and weather.
C.Changes in the sea geography.
26.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Sea and Ice Around Antarctica
B.Deep Sea Secrets Brought by Seals
C.Science Group Finds New Ice Shelves

Fudan University in Shanghai has a new rule about using AI for writing college papers. The rule says students cannot use AI for six things, including creating or changing experiment (实验) results, as well as translating their writing. Breaking this rule may cost students their college degree.
The new rule has caused heated discussions online, as it is believed to be the world’ s strictest. Supporters think Fudan is doing the right thing. With the rise of generative AI (生成式人工智能) like ChatGPT, 86 percent of students worldwide had used AI for schoolwork by July, according to world research company Statista. Some even let AI do all the work, which can be dangerous, especially in jobs like nursing and firefighting.
The difficulty in catching AI-generated schoolwork adds to the problem. A US study in March found that only 37 percent of teachers have proper training in using AI detection (检测) programs. The detection programs also have trouble keeping up with fast-developing generative AI, which now creates less predictable content (可预测的内容), explained Australian expert Leon Furze on his website. As a result, the detection programs do not always work well. Teachers cannot fully trust them, as one mistake by the program can seriously influence a student, noted Education Week.
Even so, some experts think Fudan is being too strict. “Stopping the use of AI for correcting or translation does not improve creativity, but may cause students to spend too much time on language problems,” Professor Guo Yingjian from Renmin University of China told China Science Daily. He suggested that Fudan should learn from the experiences of foreign universities by teaching students to use AI correctly and requiring them to disclose (公开) when they have used it.
27.What are students at Fudan University not allowed to do with AI?
A.Design experiments. B.Learn languages. C.Transłate their writing.
28.What does Paragraph 2 show about Fudan’s new rule?
A.It will influence many industries.
B.It is supported by some people.
C.It is not the strictest in the world.
29.Why is catching AI-generated schoolwork difficult?
A.AI detection programs are too hard for teachers to use.
B.There is no proper training provided for teachers.
C.Detection tools develop slower than generative AI.
30.How should students use AI, according to Professor Guo Yingjian?
A.Use AI for more creative tasks.
B.Use AI wisely and note the use of it.
C.Use Al mostly for language help.

He was deeply moved by the warmth of the local people, who invited him to their homes and treated him with special food. He tried to learn useful expressions from their languages, but they were too difficult to understand.
During the walk, Salopek loved the special Yunnan lifestyle. He would spend several days living with a farmer, talking for a long time under a tree. He would stop to film some young men who were building their houses. He was surprised that in the villages, people still use their hands to build houses and roads, making tools for living and farming. He was impressed (印象深刻) by how people slowed down and enjoyed their traditional way of life.
Actually, Salopek is practising slow journalism (新闻工作) along the way, which encourages reporting news with close attention and careful study. “Though technology brings us closer, too much information leaves us little time to think,” said Salopek, “It allows me to make hidden connections that we miss when we travel too fast and catch valuable moments during the journey. ”

24.词义猜测题。根据“In the past, people only studied a small part of the sea around, so the information about this area was sparse”可知,划线词前提到了过去人们只研究了周围海洋的一小部分,因此划线词是对这方面了解“稀少的”。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据“The information also showed new underwater characteristics…Warm water can go through the cavities and reach the ice shelves. Then it melts (融化) the ice.”以及“So if we find out where the warm water enters the underside of the shelves…and many other things that may change our future sea and weather,”可知,海豹可以告诉我们一个崭新的海洋世界。故选A。
26.最佳标题题。通读全文,尤其根据“What can a seal (海豹) teach us about the deep ocean? A lot.”以及“The information from seals is so valuable. It shows that something was wrong…deeper down than what we thought was the sea floor,”本文是一篇说明文,文章介绍了通过海豹,人们可以得知更多关于深海的信息,因此选B“海豹带来的深海秘密”适合作为文章标题。故选B。

【答案】27.C 28.B 29.C 30.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了复旦大学关于学生使用AI写作的新规定及其引发的讨论。

28.细节理解题。根据文章第2段“Supporters think Fudan is doing the right thing”可知,新规得到部分人支持。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第3段“The detection programs also have trouble keeping up with fast-developing generative AI”可知,检测工具跟不上生成式AI的发展速度,即检测工具发展慢于生成式AI。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第4段“He suggested…teaching students to use AI correctly and requiring them to disclose when they have used it”可知,郭教授建议正确使用AI并公开使用情况,即明智地使用AI并记下它的使用情况。故选B。

He planned to hike through the Middle East, Asia, North America, hoping to reach South America by 2027. He tries to follow in the footsteps of ancient humans out of Africa and rediscover the planet.
