My 14-year-old son has been attracted by fantasy adventure novels since primary school. When asked why during a talk, he explained that those stories get imagination going, making himself think more about the world. The talk with him encourages me to recommend four wonderful books to teens.
Kiki Kallira Breaks a Kingdom
Kiki Kallira has always been a worrier. When her anxiety has been getting out of control, one thing that always makes her feel better is drawing. Kiki keeps drawing and her sketchbook is full of fanciful characters of Indian legends (传说) her mother has told her since childhood . When her drawings come to life, she enters the fantasy world she created to save her real world.
Clarice the Brave
Topics of friendship, family, and overcoming previous prejudices are at the heart of this animal adventure tale. A young mouse, Clarice, gets separated from her brother Charles after a fight in the ship. Clarice finds herself on a lifeboat while Charles remains on the ship. As struggling to find each other across the sea, they learn the true meaning of bravery.
The Phantom Tollbooth
When Milo gets bored, he goes through a tollbooth that strangely appears in his room which magically leads him to meet new friends like Tock and go on the adventure-filled exploration of a lifetime. Full of humorous and figurative puns (双关语), the tale interests today’s young readers.
Circus Mirandus
Micah wants to help his dying grandfather reconnect with the magical Circus Mirandus that he remembers from his youth. Micah believes his grandfather’s stories and sets out to find Light Bender, a circus member who promised a miracle (奇迹) to his grandfather. This story perfectly mixes fantasy with true emotions related to family and friendship.

Curtis Newman knew the waterfall was coming. He’d sailed down this river before. He figured he and his wife Krystal and their 13-year-old son Hunter would jump out of the boat into the shallow water, rappel down(绕绳下降)the rocks on either side of the falls, and continue on their way, as he had on a previous trip.
But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually controllable waterfall into something fierce(凶猛的).As they approached the waterfall late on the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Newman could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrow canyon(峡谷)that they were in trouble. There was no way they’d be able to move down the rocks on either side of the waterfall.
There was no cell phone service, and they hadn’t seen a single person in the past three days. As he wondered what to do, Newman heard voices coming from the other side of the waterfall. “We have to get those people a message,” he thought. He picked up a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve “Help”. He tried tossing it over the waterfall, but it floated away in the wrong directions. Krystal reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack. Newman knew it was an impossible attempt, but he wrote “We are stuck here at the waterfall. Help please!” and put the note into a bottle. This time, he threw the bottle over the waterfall successfully.
It took them about 30 minutes to go back to the beach where they had lunch. By about 10:30 pm, they pulled out their sleeping bags. Then, just after midnight, they heard a helicopter hovering (盘旋) above them. Newman turned to his son and started shaking him.
They got rescued. “The rescuers said that they had been performing these kinds of rescues, but no one had ever been rescued by a message in a bottle,” Newman said.
4. What made this year distinct from the previous one?
A. The more dangerous waterfall.
B. The usual weather conditions.

In a coffee shop, we usually hear someone saying, “Don’t worry; the cup is made of bioplastics!” These items are appearing everywhere, ensuring business owners and consumers feel good about the single-use items they are carrying around. The problem is that there’s a lot of misinformation about bioplastics—and unfortunately, bioplastics aren’t the perfect solution to the problem of plastic people think they are.
“Anytime you add the term‘bio’ or ‘plant-based’ to a product name or description, people automatically think that makes them good for the planet,” environment expert and consultant Shannon Kenny said. “But unless you have proper equipment to process and recycle these bioplastics, they can be just as harmful to the planet as traditional plastics.” In order for bioplastic items to break down, they need the perfect storm of gases, heat and airflow that is only provided by specific equipment. And since most of us probably don’t have the commercial equipment,we may not know what to do with the products.
Since they look like plastic, people often think they can be recycled, which isn’t true. According to Kenny, “Consumers often put bioplastics into recycling bins, but it messes the whole process up. When bioplastics enter the plastic recycling stream, they’re difficult to identify and separate from the other plastics, which damages the entire recycling process and creates a low-grade recycled plastic.”
So if plastic isn’t great, but bioplastics aren’t either, what should we use? The most sustainable solution in both the short term and the long run, though, is to avoid single-use items. The best choice is to bring your own cup to the coffee shop and your own cutlery to the office to eat your salad or out to dinner at your favorite fast-casual restaurant. And educate others—friends, family, and even your local coffee shop or restaurant owners—that these bioplastics aren’t as “green" as they may appear.
8. Which of the following does Shannon Kenny probably agree?
A. Bioplastics are no better than common plastics.
B. Bioplastics cost customers less to use.
C. Bioplastics increase the cost of production.
D. Bioplastics are environment-friendly.
9. What is the challenge about bioplastics?
A. Consumers can’t tell them from other plastics.
B. They can’t be broken down completely.
C. Consumers prefer to use traditional plastics.
D. They are not dealt with properly.
10. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. Adding some background information.
B. Summarizing the previous paragraphs.
C. Providing some advice for the readers.
D. Introducing a new topic for discussion.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Why are bioplastics harmful?
B. Are bioplastics better for the planet?
C. Can bioplastics be widely used?
D. How are biolastics made pollution-free?
D
Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings get wet, they can’t fly. But one study shows that honeybees do have another, less obvious choice to save them from death in the water: surfing.
The discovery began with a lucky accident. When research engineer Chris Roh passed by Caltech’s Millikan Pond, he saw a honeybee resting in the water, and since it was midday, the honeybee’s shadow (影子) fell directly on the bottom of the pond. However, what really caught his eye was the waves created by the honeybee’s wings, as the waves from one wing crashed with those from the other wing.
Roh brought honeybees to the lab, where he recreated the conditions he saw at Millikan Pond. He placed a bee in a pan of still water and then shone filtered (过滤的) light from above to pretend it was the midday sun. He did this with 33 bees, but only for a few minutes one single bee at a time, and then gave each bee time to recover.
While water prevents a bee from flying by clinging (紧附) to its wings, the same condition obviously provides another way for the bee to escape. The bee pulls water with its wings, creating waves that can push it forward.
But there are some limitations. Obviously, the bees can’t produce enough force to get them out of the water. However, the wave can push them forward enough to the edge of the water, where they can then climb out and fly away. This behavior is more tiring than flying, and Roh guesses the bees can only hold it for about 10 minutes before using up their strength, so the chances to get out may be limited.
“This behavior has never been recorded in other insects,” Roh added. This study focused on honeybees, but future studies could investigate whether it is also used by other bee groups or possibly even by other winged insects.
12. According to the new study, what helps honeybees avoid death in water?
A. The crash between their wings.
B. The water clinging to their bodies.
C.The strong will to get out of water.
D. The waves produced by their wings.
13. Why was filtered light used in the lab probably?
A. To help the honeybees recover quickly.
B. To make the honeybees gain more force.
C. To keep the honeybees in warm conditions.
D. To create a shadow on the bottom of the pan.
14. How are the limitations of the honeybees’ way presented in paragraph 5?
A. By using examples.
B. By giving explanations.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By listing specific numbers.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. No insects can surf other than honeybees.
B. More methods will be used to study insects.
C. Researches will be done into other bee species.
D. Bees made more and more scientists concerned.

Translation is a very important tool for effective communication. A common way of getting any translation done is to turn to human translators. However, machine translators have developed rapidly in recent years. Many people say they will take the place of human translators soon. 16
Machines may fail to understand culture properly. Different cultures have different words that are unique to that specific culture. Machines cannot understand or recognize idioms, slang, and allusions (典故). 17 By contrast, human translators can find the suitable equivalent ( 对 应 物 ) in the target language based on the cultural background.
18 In different languages, there are words with various meanings, which can be a problem for machine translators. These words have to be placed in context to
decide their true meanings, and in many cases only human translators can do this. If you run a document with this kind of words through a machine translator, it may lead to incorrect translations.
It is difficult to localize machines for different languages. New phrases are being developed in almost all languages. 19 If you feed new words into a machine translator, the machine might go “speechless” trying to come up with the most proper way to translate the strange words. Human translators, on the other hand, can pick up on the development in a language quickly.
It’s difficult for machines to recognize style and tone. Every written document has different style and tone. A document can have poetic, funny or persuasive style and tone. Machine translators may lose the intended tone and style existing in the original document. 20 And such a translation can hardly resonate (引起共鸣) with the person who reads it.
A. Thus the result is a flat translation.
B. Machines can’t relate words to the context.
C. It doesn’t actually hold up for some reasons.
D. Machines can’t remember words of all languages.
E. This is one challenge they may find very difficult to get over.
F. Machine translators are unable to catch these changes in time.
G. Machine translators are becoming more and more popular these days.

阅读短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
How do native speakers truly feel when speaking with non-native English speakers? It seems that 36 (break) English annoys them. However, they keep being really nice when speaking with non-native speakers. I wonder 37 they really feel when doing so. I think it would depend on the native English speakers. Some people are just 38 (easy) annoyed.
Personally, I study Spanish as my second language. Whenever I hear someone 39 (try) speaking English, I am patient with them because I know how difficult it is to talk in a non-native tongue. I also know English is very difficult 40 (learn), and that increases my respect 41 their efforts. I’m a patient person by nature.
The situation 42 (matter) too. If I were a waiter on a super crowded day and really needed to do about a dozen different things, I might become upset at having to wait for someone to struggle while ordering 43 (he) meal.
There also exists the 44 (possible) that what is considered as annoyance is not truly annoyance. I might frown(皱眉)while listening to a non-native speaker, 45 that would be because I am concentrating and listening hard to understand him. It wouldn’t mean I’m at all annoyed.
