Page 1 All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, “Oh, why can’t you remain like this for ever!” This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end. Of course they lived at 14, and until Wendy came her mother was the chief one. She was a lovely lady, with a romantic mind and such a sweet mocking mouth. Her romantic mind was like the tiny boxes, one within the other, that come from the puzzling East, however many you discover there is always one more; and her sweet mocking mouth had one kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectly conspicuous in the right-hand corner. Page 2 The way Mr. Darling won her was this: the many gentlemen who had been boys when she was a girl discovered simultaneously that they loved her, and they all ran to her house to propose to her except Mr. Darling, who took a cab and nipped in first, and so he got her. He got all of her, except the innermost box and the kiss. He never knew about the box, and in time he gave up trying for the kiss. Wendy thought Napoleon could have got it, but I can picture him trying, and then going off in a passion, slamming the door. Mr. Darling used to boast to Wendy that her mother not only loved him but respected him. He was one of those deep ones who know about stocks and shares. Of course no one really knows, but he quite seemed to know, and he often said stocks were up and shares were down in a way that would have made any woman respect him. Mrs. Darling was interested in the children’s minds. She would sit on the floor by their beds, and they would tell her all their little secrets, and she would draw them when she should have been totting up. They were Mrs. Darling’s guesses. Wendy came first, then John, then Michael. Page 3 Wendy was a girl of about twelve, with a lovely smile and a mouth that was always ready to open and say something kind. John was a sturdy boy, with a round face and a quick temper. Michael was a baby, with a round face and a sweet smile. They all slept in the same room, the nursery, which was at the top of the house. Mr. and Mrs. Darling slept in the room next door. Mr. Darling was a small, brisk man, with a red face and a quick temper. He was very fond of his wife and children, but he was also very fond of money. He was always worrying about the bills. One evening, Mr. Darling was very cross. He had been to the bank, and the manager had told him that he must reduce his expenses. So he came home and said to Mrs. Darling, “We must economize, my dear. We must cut down on the children’s milk.” Page 4 Mrs. Darling was very upset. “But the children need their milk,” she said. “They can do without it,” said Mr. Darling. “I did without it when I was a boy.” “But you were a different boy,” said Mrs. Darling. Mr. Darling was very angry. “That’s a fine thing to say!” he cried. “Do you mean to say that I was a bad boy?” “No, no,” said Mrs. Darling quickly. “I only meant that you were a strong boy.” Mr. Darling was not satisfied. “I shall go and see about the milk,” he said. “I shall tell the milkman to leave only half a pint for the children.” He went out, and Mrs. Darling sat down and cried. The children were in the nursery, and they heard their father shouting and their mother crying. Page 5 Wendy went to the door and listened. “What’s the matter?” she asked. “Nothing, my dear,” said Mrs. Darling, wiping her eyes. “Go back to bed.” But Wendy did not go back. She stood in the doorway and looked at her mother. “Why are you crying?” she asked. Mrs. Darling did not answer. She just sat and cried. Then John came out of the nursery. “What’s the matter?” he asked. “Nothing, John,” said Mrs. Darling. “Go back to bed.” But John did not go back. He stood beside Wendy and looked at his mother. Then Michael came out. He was only a baby, but he knew that something was wrong. He held out his arms to his mother. Mrs. Darling took him in her arms and cried more than ever. Page 6 Just then, Mr. Darling came back. He was carrying a bottle of milk. “Here,” he said, “I have brought the children’s milk. I told the milkman to leave a full pint.” Mrs. Darling looked up at him. “Oh, George!” she said. Mr. Darling smiled. “I couldn’t do it,” he said. “I couldn’t cut down on the children’s milk.” Mrs. Darling got up and kissed him. “Oh, George, you are a good man!” she said. The children clapped their hands. “Hooray for Father!” they shouted. Mr. Darling looked very pleased. “Now,” he said, “let us all go to bed. We have had a busy day.” They all went to bed, and soon the nursery was quiet. But Mrs. Darling could not sleep. She sat by the children’s beds and looked at them. She thought about the time when they were babies, and she thought about the time when they would grow up. She did not want them to grow up. Page 7 Suddenly, she heard a noise at the window. She looked up, and she saw a boy’s face looking in at her. It was a strange face, with a wide smile and bright eyes. The boy was wearing a green suit, and he had a feather in his cap. Mrs. Darling was very surprised. “Who are you?” she asked. The boy did not answer. He just smiled and waved. Then Mrs. Darling saw something else. She saw a small light flying around the boy’s head. It was a fairy! The boy opened the window and jumped in. He landed softly on the floor. “Who are you?” asked Mrs. Darling again. “I am Peter Pan,” said the boy. “I live in Neverland.” Page 8 Mrs. Darling was very frightened. “Neverland?” she said. “What is Neverland?” “It is a place where children never grow up,” said Peter. “It is a place full of fairies and pirates and mermaids and Indians.” Mrs. Darling looked at Peter. He was a very small boy, but he looked very brave. “Why have you come here?” she asked. “I have come for my shadow,” said Peter. “I lost it here last night.” Mrs. Darling looked down at the floor. She saw a small, dark shape lying there. It was Peter’s shadow! “Oh!” she said. “I see. But how did you lose it?” “I was flying in through the window, and Nana bit it off,” said Peter. Nana was the children’s nurse. She was a big, gentle dog. Page 9 Mrs. Darling picked up Peter’s shadow. It was very thin and very dark. “Here you are,” she said. “But how will you put it back on?” Peter looked at his shadow. He tried to stick it on with soap, but it would not stick. He tried to stick it on with glue, but it would not stick. He tried to stick it on with tape, but it would not stick. He began to cry. “Oh, my shadow!” he said. “I shall never get it back!” Mrs. Darling felt sorry for him. “Don’t cry,” she said. “I will sew it on for you.” She got her needle and thread, and she sewed Peter’s shadow back on to his feet. Peter stopped crying. He looked down at his shadow. “Thank you,” he said. “You are very kind.” Page 10 Just then, Wendy woke up. She sat up in bed and looked at Peter. “Who are you?” she asked. “I am Peter Pan,” said Peter. “I live in Neverland.” Wendy looked at Peter. She thought he was very handsome. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “I have come for my shadow,” said Peter. “Your mother sewed it on for me.” Wendy looked at her mother. “Did you really sew his shadow on?” she asked. Mrs. Darling smiled. “Yes, my dear,” she said. “He is a very nice little boy.” Peter looked at Wendy. “You are very pretty,” he said. “Will you come to Neverland with me?” Wendy’s eyes lit up. “Oh, yes!” she said. “I should love to!” Page 11 “I can teach you to fly,” said Peter. “All you need is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust.” He sprinkled some of Tinker Bell’s dust on Wendy, John, and Michael. At first, nothing happened. Then, slowly, they began to feel light, as if they were floating. “Flap your arms!” cried Peter. “Flap them like a bird!” Wendy flapped her arms, and to her surprise, she rose into the air. John and Michael did the same. Soon, all three children were flying around the nursery. Page 12 “Follow me!” said Peter. “And whatever you do, don’t look down!” He flew out of the window, and the children followed. The night air was cool on their faces. They flew over the rooftops of London, past chimneys and church spires. “Look!” cried Wendy. “I can see the Thames! And Big Ben!” Peter smiled. “That’s nothing,” he said. “Wait until you see Neverland!” Page 13 They flew for a long time. The stars twinkled above them, and the moon shone brightly. John began to feel tired. “How much farther?” he asked. “Not much longer,” said Peter. “We’re almost there.” Suddenly, Michael cried out. “Look! There it is! Neverland!” In the distance, they could see a beautiful island. It was covered with trees, and there were mountains and a lagoon. They could even see a pirate ship sailing on the sea. Page 14 As they flew closer, they could hear the sound of waves and the calls of strange birds. “Welcome to Neverland!” said Peter. “This is my home.” They landed softly on the beach. Tinker Bell flew ahead, lighting the way with her tiny light. “Come on,” said Peter. “I want you to meet the Lost Boys. They’re my friends.” He led them through the trees to a small clearing. In the middle of the clearing was a large tree with a hole in its trunk. Page 15 “This is our home,” said Peter. “We call it the Home Under the Ground.” He climbed into the hole, and the children followed. Inside, it was warm and cozy. There were beds made of leaves, a table, and chairs. The Lost Boys came running to meet them. There were six of them: Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Curly, and the Twins. “Who are they?” asked Tootles. “This is Wendy, John, and Michael,” said Peter. “Wendy is going to be our mother.” Page 16 The Lost Boys cheered. “Hooray for Mother Wendy!” they shouted. Wendy smiled. “I’d love to be your mother,” she said. “But first, I need to make sure you’re all clean and tidy.” She began to tidy up the home. She made the beds, washed the boys’ clothes, and cooked them a meal. Peter watched her with admiration. “You’re the best mother ever,” he said. Page 17 Life in Neverland was wonderful. The children played all day long. They swam in the lagoon with the mermaids, climbed trees, and hunted for treasure. They even fought with the pirates, led by the evil Captain Hook. Captain Hook was a cruel man with a hook for a hand. He hated Peter Pan because Peter had cut off his hand in a fight and fed it to a crocodile. The crocodile had liked the taste of Hook’s hand so much that it followed him everywhere, waiting to eat the rest of him. Page 18 One day, the children were playing in the woods when they heard a loud noise. “Pirates!” cried Peter. “Hide!” The children hid behind a tree. They saw Captain Hook and his men walking through the woods, looking for Peter. “Where is that boy?” growled Hook. “I’ll get him if it’s the last thing I do!” Just then, a crocodile appeared. It opened its huge mouth and roared. Hook screamed and ran away as fast as he could. His men followed him. Page 19 The children laughed. “That was easy!” said John. Peter smiled. “Captain Hook is a coward,” he said. “He’s afraid of the crocodile.” Just then, Wendy noticed something. “Where’s Michael?” she asked. The children looked around. Michael was gone. “Oh no!” cried Wendy. “The pirates must have taken him!” Peter’s face turned serious. “We have to rescue him,” he said. “Come on!” Page 20 They flew to the pirate ship, the Jolly Roger. It was anchored in the lagoon. “Stay here,” said Peter. “I’ll go in first.” He flew onto the ship and hid behind a barrel. He saw Michael tied to a mast, and Captain Hook standing next to him. “Where is Peter Pan?” asked Hook. “Tell me, or I’ll make you walk the plank!” Michael didn’t answer. He looked brave, even though he was scared. Peter took out his dagger and prepared to attack. Page 21 Peter crept silently toward Hook. He was determined to save Michael, and he would not let the pirate captain win. Just as Hook raised his hook to grab Michael, Peter jumped out from behind the barrel. “Leave him alone!” he shouted. Hook spun around, his face turning red with anger. “Peter Pan!” he snarled. “So you’ve come to join your little friend. Good. Now I can kill you both!” The pirates drew their swords and surrounded Peter. But Peter was not afraid. He waved his dagger and prepared to fight. Page 22 “Come on, you cowards!” Peter yelled. “I’m not afraid of any of you!” The pirates charged at him, but Peter was quick. He dodged their swords and leaped around the deck. He fought like a wild cat, and soon several pirates were lying on the ground, groaning. Wendy, John, and the Lost Boys watched from the shore. They cheered loudly for Peter. “Go, Peter! Go!” they shouted. Hook watched the fight, his eyes burning with hatred. He knew he had to do something, or Peter would defeat them all. Page 23 Hook had a plan. He slipped away from the fight and went to the cabin of the ship. There, he found a large ticking clock. He smiled a cruel smile. The crocodile that had eaten his hand loved the sound of ticking clocks—it reminded the beast of the time when Hook’s hand had tasted so good. Hook carried the clock to the deck. He set it down near Michael, then hid behind a mast, waiting. Page 24 Peter was still fighting the pirates. He had no idea what Hook was planning. Suddenly, the sound of the ticking clock reached the crocodile. The beast was swimming near the ship, and it heard the noise at once. It swam faster, its eyes fixed on the deck. Wendy saw the crocodile first. “Peter! Look out!” she screamed. “The crocodile is coming!” Peter turned around. He saw the crocodile climbing onto the ship, its jaws wide open. Page 25 “It’s the clock!” Peter shouted. “Hook brought the clock to trick the crocodile!” The pirates saw the crocodile and panicked. They ran around the deck, screaming. “Help! Help!” they cried. “The crocodile is going to eat us!” Hook stepped out from behind the mast. He laughed loudly. “Foolish crocodile!” he cried. “You think that clock is me, but it is not! Now, Peter Pan, you are mine!” He raised his hook and ran toward Peter. Page 26 Peter and Hook fought. Their swords clashed together, making a loud, sharp noise They fought all over the deck—on the planks, on the stairs, even on the edge of the ship. Hook was strong, but Peter was quick and clever. Wendy watched, her heart pounding. She was afraid Peter would be hurt. Then she had an idea. She turned to John and the Lost Boys. “We have to help Peter!” she said. Page 27 “How?” asked John. “We don’t have swords.” “Use whatever you can find!” Wendy said. “Ropes, buckets, anything!” The boys ran to find weapons. Soon, they were climbing onto the ship, yelling and waving their makeshift tools. They attacked the pirates, who were already scared of the crocodile. The pirates didn’t stand a chance. They dropped their swords and ran for the lifeboats. Page 28 Meanwhile, Peter and Hook were still fighting. Neither of them would give up. Hook tried to grab Peter with his hook, but Peter jumped out of the way. He swung his dagger and cut Hook’s hat off. The hat fell into the sea, and the crocodile snapped it up in one bite. Hook screamed with rage. “I’ll get you, Peter Pan!” he shouted. “I’ll get you if it takes forever!” He lunged at Peter, but he stepped backward too far. His foot slipped off the edge of the ship. Page 29 Hook fell into the sea. He splashed around, screaming for help. The crocodile heard him. It turned away from the hat and swam straight toward him. Hook saw the crocodile coming. His face turned white with fear. “No! No!” he cried. “Stay away from me!” But it was too late. The crocodile opened its jaws and swallowed Hook in one bite. The pirates, who were rowing away in the lifeboats, saw what happened. They rowed even faster. Page 30 Peter stood on the edge of the ship, looking out at the sea. He smiled. Hook was gone, and the pirates were fleeing. Wendy ran to him. “You did it, Peter!” she said. “You defeated Hook!” Peter turned to her. “We did it,” he said. “All of us.” John and the Lost Boys cheered. What have you been doing?” Wendy began to tell their story—about flying to Neverland, meeting the Lost Boys, fighting Captain Hook, and living in the Home Under the Ground. She told it all, from the moment Peter Pan first appeared at the window to the day they flew back home. Mr. and Mrs. Darling listened, their mouths open in surprise. They could not believe what they were hearing. Page 43 “And Peter Pan?” Mrs. Darling asked. “Is he real? A boy who never grows up?” “Oh, yes,” Wendy said. “He’s very real. And he’s very brave. He saved Michael from the pirates.” Just then, Michael pulled a shiny gold coin out of his pocket. “Look what he gave me!” he said, holding it up. Mr. Darling took the coin and looked at it. It was old and strange, with no date or name on it. “This is not from any country I know,” he said. Page 44 The next few days were filled with happiness. The children told their story to everyone they met, and 孩子们逢人便讲自己的冒险故事, soon the whole neighborhood knew about Peter Pan and Neverland. But some people shook their heads and said it was just a dream. Wendy did not care. She knew it was real. Every night, she looked out the window, hoping to see Peter’s face looking in. But Peter did not come. Page 45 Weeks passed, and the children slowly got back to their old lives. Wendy went back to school, John began to study his lessons again, and Michael played with his toys. But they never forgot Neverland. They talked about it every day, and sometimes, when they were alone, they would flap their arms and pretend to fly. Wendy still kept her promise. Every spring, she would look out the window, waiting for Peter to come and take her back to Neverland. Page 46 Years went by. Wendy grew up, became a young lady, and then a mother herself. She had a daughter named Jane. Wendy told Jane all about Peter Pan, just as she had once told her own parents. Jane loved the stories. She would sit on Wendy’s lap and listen, her eyes wide with wonder. “Will Peter ever come back?” Jane asked one day. Wendy smiled. “I hope so,” she said. “But even if he doesn’t, his story will live on.” Page 47 One evening, many years later, Wendy was sitting by the fire, sewing. Jane was in the nursery, playing. Suddenly, Jane called out, “Mother! Come quick!” Wendy put down her needle and thread and hurried to the nursery. She found Jane standing by the window, pointing at the sky. “Look!” Jane said. “It’s a boy! He’s flying!” Wendy looked out the window. Her heart skipped a beat. There he was—Peter Pan, with his green suit, his feathered cap, and his bright, bright eyes. Page 48 Peter flew to the window and tapped on the glass. Jane opened it, and he jumped in. He looked just the same as he had many years ago—young, brave, and full of adventure. He had not grown up at all. “Hello,” Peter said. “I’ve come for Wendy. Is she here?” Jane shook her head. “Wendy is my mother,” she said. “She’s grown up now.” Peter’s face fell. He did not understand. How could Wendy have grown up? Grown-up people were not allowed in Neverland. Page 49 “But I promised to come back,” Peter said, his voice sad “可我答应过要回来的,”彼得的声音里满是难过。 Jane smiled. “You can take me instead,” she said. “I haven’t grown up yet. I can fly. And I can be the mother of the Lost Boys.” Peter looked at Jane. She had Wendy’s eyes, and Wendy’s smile. For a moment, he thought she was Wendy. “All right,” he said. “But you have to believe. With faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust, you can fly.” He sprinkled some pixie dust on Jane, and soon she was floating above the floor. Page 50 Wendy stood in the doorway, watching them. She did not say a word, but her eyes were filled with tears. She remembered the night she had flown away with Peter, the stars in the sky, the wind in her hair. She remembered Neverland, and the Lost Boys, and the sound of the waves. “Goodbye, Mother!” Jane called, as she and Peter flew out the window. Wendy waved. “Goodbye,” she whispered. “Have fun.” Outside, the moon was bright, and the stars twinkled. Somewhere in the sky, a boy and a girl were flying away to Neverland, to begin a new adventure 8. Something Worse than the Night(Pages 51-55) As days passed, Wendy busied herself cooking and mending clothes for the boys. She thoroughly enjoyed being a mother, yet she grew anxious about John and Michael—they seemed on the verge of forgetting their home in London. The adventures in Neverland were simply too enchanting. One night, the Indians launched a raid on the underground house. Several Indians squeezed into the tree holes, only to get stuck; their companions had to pull them out like corks from bottles. On another occasion, Peter rescued the Indian princess Tiger Lily from Captain Hook. From then on, the Indians became Peter's allies, taking charge of guarding the underground house against pirate attacks. The boys had a wonderful time every day, and Peter often went out exploring. But Wendy always told stories to everyone at night, urging them not to forget the rules of the civilized world. She spoke of parents, fireplaces, and bedtime stories. As John and Michael listened, they sometimes quietly wiped away tears. " We should go home," Wendy said one night. " No!" the boys shouted in unison. " We want to stay in Neverland forever!" Peter didn't want Wendy to leave either, but seeing the dejected looks on John and Michael's faces, he began to waver. " Stay a few more days," he said. " Then we'll go find your mother and father." Wendy agreed, unaware that danger was creeping closer. The pirates had been watching secretly, and Captain Hook had hatched a malicious plan. 9. Hook’s Evil Plan(Pages 56-60) Captain Hook hated Peter Pan with a passion and swore to make Peter and his friends pay. He ordered the pirates to bake a beautiful cake, laced it with deadly poison, and planned to give it to the children. " Once Peter Pan is dead, Neverland will be ours!" Hook growled viciously. The pirates left the cake at the entrance of the underground house and then hid in the woods. Wendy was puzzled when she saw the cake. " Who would send us a cake?" she wondered. She approached the cake and smelled a sharp, strange odor, immediately realizing something was wrong. " Put it down at once!" Wendy shouted, knocking the cake to the ground with a sweep of her hand. The cake smashed, and the grass where it fell withered and turned black instantly. The boys paled with fear. " It's the pirates!" John cried. Peter drew his sword, blazing with anger. " Hook! I will defeat you!" He rushed out of the underground house, but there was no sign of the pirates. Hook had already retreated with his men; he had an even more sinister plan in mind. That night, the underground house was unusually quiet. The children fell into a deep sleep, and only Wendy remained awake. She stared at the moonlight streaming through the cave entrance, longing for her distant home. Little did she know that this would be their last night in Neverland. 黑布林《彼得·潘》61-70页 中英对照译文 (延续前文译名体系,语言贴合青少年阅读节奏,精准还原原著的奇幻与温情) Page 61 Jane flew higher and higher, the wind whipping through her hair. Neverland was even more beautiful than Wendy’s stories. The trees were greener, the lagoon bluer, and the mountains seemed to touch the sky. Page 62 They landed in the same clearing where Wendy had first met the Lost Boys. The boys were waiting, their faces eager. “Peter! You’re back!” shouted Tootles, waving a wooden sword. “And who’s this?” “This is Jane,” Peter said. “She’s Wendy’s daughter. She’s going to be our new mother.” The Lost Boys cheered. They crowded around Jane, asking a hundred questions at once—about London, about Wendy, about flying. Page 63 Jane laughed as she answered their questions. She felt like she had known these boys forever. That night, she made them dinner—berries and nuts she found in the woods, and fish the boys had caught in the lagoon. Afterward, she told them stories about Wendy, about the nursery in London, about Nana the dog. The boys listened, their eyes wide. They had never heard such wonderful stories. Even Peter sat quietly, a smile on his face. Page 64 Life in Neverland was just as exciting as Jane had hoped. Every day was filled with adventure. They chased fireflies through the forest at night, swam with mermaids at dawn, and hunted for treasure in the caves by the sea. Jane even taught the boys to weave flower crowns, something Wendy had taught her. Peter loved having Jane around. She was just like Wendy—kind, clever, and full of stories—but she was also brave, and she loved to fight pirates (even if there were no pirates left). Page 65 But one day, Jane looked up at the sky and noticed something different—the leaves were turning red and yellow. “Peter,” she said, “why are the leaves changing? Wendy said the trees in Neverland are always green.” Peter frowned. He had never noticed the leaves changing before. “I don’t know,” he said. “Neverland is what you believe it to be. Maybe it’s changing because you’re changing.” Jane’s heart sank. She knew what he meant. Page 66 That night, Jane lay awake in her leaf bed, thinking about home. She missed her mother, missed the nursery, missed the sound of the clock ticking in the hallway She thought about the stories Wendy had told her, about growing up, about school, about all the things she had left behind in London. For the first time, she wondered if she wanted to stay in Neverland forever. Peter was right—she was changing. She was no longer just a little girl. She was growing up. Page 67 The next morning, Jane told the Lost Boys she wanted to go home. The boys looked sad. “But you’re our mother,” said Curly, his lip trembling. “Who will tell us stories?” Jane knelt down and hugged him. “I’ll come back to visit,” she said. “I promise. And I’ll bring new stories with me.” She turned to Peter, who was standing apart from the others, his face unreadable. “I have to go, Peter,” she said softly. Page 68 Peter nodded. He did not try to stop her. He knew he could not. “I’ll take you home,” he said. The Lost Boys walked them to the beach. They said goodbye slowly, each boy giving Jane a small gift—a shiny stone, a feather, a shell. Jane tucked the gifts into her pocket. She waved until the boys were just tiny dots in the distance. Page 69 They flew over Neverland one last time, Jane’s heart heavy with sadness and joy. She was sad to leave Peter and the Lost Boys, but she was happy to be going home to Wendy. She knew she would never forget her time in Neverland, not as long as she lived. Peter flew silently beside her. He was thinking about Wendy, and now Jane. He wondered if all girls grew up and left him. Page 70 At last, they saw the lights of London. Peter pointed to the familiar house on the corner. “That’s your home,” he said. “Same as it was for Wendy.” Jane nodded. She looked at Peter, his green suit, his feathered cap, his eyes that never grew old. “Will you come visit me?” she asked. Peter smiled. “I will,” he said. “When you least expect it.” Jane landed softly on the roof. She turned to wave, but Peter was already gone, flying back to Neverland, where the stars were bright and the boys were waiting.
