Last weekend, I took my 2-year-old grandson, Rio, to the park. My goal was to get him outside to burn some energy and teach him about the ducks. He had no goals. Two-year-olds don’t need goals. That was the first lesson I learned that day.
He had a sense of wonder. As soon as we entered the park, he looked up at the sky and found joy in watching the clouds. Next, he stared at the trees, laughing as he tried to catch the rustling leaves. At that moment, nothing could have amused him more. His curiosity was constant, endless. He was always on the search for sticks. He scraped the ground with them, rapped a drumbeat with them on trees and benches, and waved them in the air like a flag. No thought of a stick being used as a weapon. No need for toys or electronic devices, unlike at home. Just sticks.
There were a few kids playing and a regular procession of people out for their morning dog walk. Rio said hi to everyone and stuck out his hand for a high-five with a few 4-and5-year-olds, who weren’t sure how to respond. But they all said hi back. He tried to strike up conversations with enthusiasm. It was clear he didn’t care what people looked like or how old they were. No judgment. No fear. Just a sincere desire to connect.
My biggest revelation was that Rio was fully present no matter what he was doing. He never asked what time it was, when we were leaving, or what we were going to do next. He was, every second, completely and absolutely in the moment.
I had expected to be the teacher, but I had it backward. My grandson helped me remember things we’re born knowing but forget in the process of becoming an adult.
4. What was the author’s first lesson at the park?
A. The park was ideal for teaching. B. planned activities bored children.
C. His plan didn’t fit a child’s nature. D. His goals were not clear enough.
5. Why did the author describe how Rio played with sticks?
A. To list all possible stick functions.
B. To warn about the dangers of sticks.
C. To show Rio’s wonder and creativity.
D. To compare sticks with electronic devices.
6. What can be inferred about Rio from paragraph 3?
A. He was too young to respond properly.
B. He preferred talking to children of his age.
C. He greeted others to seek positive feedback.
D. He was open to connections with others.
7. What does the author’s experience show?
A. The value of family outings. B. The lost wisdom of living.
C. The harm of setting goals. D. The way to develop curiosity.
C
Though spiders often draw attention for their strange traits, biologist Ximena Nelson of the University of Canterbury values them for their surprisingly complex brains. Over 30 years of research has uncovered that spiders exhibit diverse advanced behaviors, including complex communication, problem-solving, learning, and even potential counting ability. With over 52,000 known species, these creatures deserve deeper understanding.
All spiders share a close evolutionary relationship, featuring two body parts and eight legs, but they vary widely in eye count, sensory reliance, respiration (呼吸) modes and web usage. What astonishes researchers most is their cognitive ability despite tiny brains — jumping spiders’ brains are no bigger than poppy seeds. Newly hatched jumping spiderlings, merely a millimeter long, hunt like small-sized leopards, using vision to track and leap on prey (猎物), demonstrating efficient neural (神经的) processing with far fewer neurons than adults.
Evidence suggests spiders can plan ahead. Experiments on Portia, a genius among jumping spiders, show they can locate prey from afar, lose sight of it, and then approach from behind. Water maze (迷宫) tests further confirm this: jumping spiders, which avoid water, choose the safest exit route more than 25% of the time, indicating they assess risks in advance.
Spiders also display individual cognitive differences, with some far more skilled at tasks than others. While many behaviors like web-building and hunting are natural, practice refines these skills, and spiders show flexibility — repairing damaged webs instantly when threads are cut.
Numerous questions about spider cognition remain. Comparative studies, such as exploring whether specialist spider predators (which hunt dangerous prey like other spiders) have more advanced cognitive skills than generalists, could unlock more secrets about how genes and environment shape these tiny but remarkable creatures’ intelligence.
8. What can we learn about spiders from the first paragraph?
A. They show various high-level behaviours.
B. Over 52,000 species have been fully studied.
C. Their strange features attract most researchers.
D. Their counting ability is completely confirmed.
9. What do the experiments on Portia and water mazes prove?
A. Spiders rely on memory for lost prey.
B. Spiders avoid water to hunt effectively.
C. Spiders make future-focused choices and judge risks.
D. Spiders outperform other creatures in problem-solving.
10. What does“refines” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Improves. B. Simplifies. C. Changes. D. Creates.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Specialist spiders are definitely smarter than generalists.
B. Many mysteries about spider cognition remain unsolved.
C. Comparative studies have revealed gene-environment links.
D. Researchers have fully explained how spider intelligence develops.
D
“Parasocial” has been named Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2025 and it has to do with relationships. It is a one-sided emotional bond that someone forms with a public figure (like a celebrity or internet influencer), despite never having met them, or with a fictional character and even AI. It is not a new concept. It was actually coined in the 1950s by sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl to describe the tendency of audiences to feel as if they knew the TV hosts personally.
Today, the internet and social media have not only fueled the rise of personal relationships between celebrities and their followers, but they have also removed the traditional boundaries between them. Nowadays, they can follow their favourite stars on live streams and even send them messages in the hope of receiving a reply. This has created a shift, which can be both positive and negative.
On the positive side, parasocial connections can be safe as there’s no social pressure or fear of judgment. For example, a streamer who shares daily vlogs, talks openly about their fears and goals, and addresses their viewers like close friends can evoke emotional ties. Followers might celebrate their successes, empathize with their struggles and trust their advice. If the streamer is relatable, they can be comforting to watch, especially in an increasingly lonely world, particularly among young people.
But there’s a darker side. The Cambridge team highlighted relationships with AI chatbots and the risks of treating them as companions or therapists. While a bot might say, “I’m sorry you failed your exam,” it isn’t expressing real empathy. It is only replying the language it was trained on. They’ve also been known to share harmful content, distort reality and give dangerous advice. They can never be the friends and even though they might occasionally help organize your thoughts, it’s essential to remember that they don’t have any feelings.
When kept in balance with real-life friendships, parasocial relationships can be enjoyable and harmless. Understanding how these one-sided bonds work helps us stay mindful, grounded and in control of what shapes our emotions.
12. What can we learn about “parasocial” from paragraph 1?
A. It only applies to celebrities. B. It is a newly invented word.
C. It was first used in the 1950s. D. It refers to two-way friendships.
13. How do social media affect parasocial relationships today?
A. They limit fans’ access to live-stream interactions.
B. They turn one-sided bonds into mutual friendships.
C. They reduce the popularity of parasocial connections.
D. They narrow the sense of distance between stars and fans.
14. What is a positive side of parasocial connections?
A. They make people more caring. B. They can replace real friendships.
C. They reduce real-life social pressure. D. They bring safe emotional support.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Parasocial Bonds: Balance Matters B. How to Use Social Media Safely
C. Parasocial: 2025’s Word of the Year D. AI Chatbots: New Friends or Risks

How to Treat Dry Skin in Winter
Winter skin can become much drier, and its effects can be seen all over — including peeling (脱皮的) skin on the face and rough hands — sometimes leading to painful cracking and bleeding. ____16____.
“The most important thing is to moisturize (保湿), and to do so frequently”, said Dr. Jennifer Stein, a dermatology (皮肤病学) specialist. She recommends using a “thick moisturizer” like a cream or ointment (软膏) — especially right after showering, ____17____ — and reapplying it often.
Paying special attention to areas that are more likely to get dry could also be useful. “For people who wash their hands a lot, it’s going to be the backs of their hands. And then, there are other spots that dry out more noticeably over time, ____18____, it’s their legs,” Stein said. “The lower legs get very dry.”
____19____ when shopping for moisturizers, but Dr. Roger Kuptoon mentioned a few key ingredients that help to attract and lock in water. “For really needy skin, go to some quick hydration (快速补水) oil. Both hydration oil and glycerin (甘油) can work well. He also recommends pairing hydrating ingredients with nicotinamide (烟酰胺) a form of vitamin B3 to strongly enhance the skin barrier.
A hot bath or shower might be hard to resist after you step out of the cold but experts recommend limiting the amount of time you spend in hot water. They suggest that showers should be limited to five to seven minutes not 30 to 45 minutes, Kuptoon said that hot showers cause the skin’s natural oils, which help to trap moisture, to go away. “____20____, but warm but not hot showers of up to ten minutes at a time are best during the winter,” he said.
A. when the skin is still wet
B. especially as people get older

Tiegan always liked to sing. Her earliest memories were woven with melodies. Tiegan liked to sing in the bath tub when she was getting ready for bed, and she liked to sing in the morning while she walked to school. Music flowed through her like a second heartbeat.
Sometimes, though, Tiegan’s family liked the house to be quiet. Mom liked to solve crossword puzzles, and Dad liked to watch the news on TV each night. “It’s quiet time, Tiegan,” they would gently remind her. Then Tiegan would go back to her room, flipping through puzzles and board games, but none brought her the joy that singing did. The silence in the house felt heavy, like a thick blanket, and the melodies inside her chest would flutter.
One bright summer day, Tiegan was singing her favorite songs in the living room. Dad came downstairs, rubbing his temples, “Tiegan, I have a headache. Can you go outside and play for a while? I really need it to be quiet so I can take a nap.” Tiegan nodded, a little disappointed, and stepped out into the warm day.
The neighborhood was lively — cyclists breezed by, neighbors chatted on porches (门廊), and dogs trotted happily alongside their owners. Tiegan sat on the edge of the path, feeling both restless and inspired. Quietly at first, she began to hum (哼) a tune. Soon, her humming grew into soft singing, then gradually rose into the clear, heartfelt melody she loved so much. “Dad probably can’t hear me out here,” she thought, comforted by the thought.
The sun was very warm, and Tiegan absentmindedly took off her baseball cap, letting the cool breeze brush against her forehead. She placed the cap on the sidewalk beside her, closed her eyes, and lost herself in the song — unaware that her pure voice had begun to draw glances from passersby.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Just as Tiegan finished one of her favorite songs, a man with a small dog stopped in front of her.

根据文章第一段“My goal was to get him outside to burn some energy and teach him about the ducks. He had no goals. Two-year-olds don't need goals. That was the first lesson I learned that day.(我本想带他到户外消耗些精力,还想教他认识小鸭子。可他压根没什么目的——两岁的孩子本就不需要目的,这是我那天学到的第一课。)”可知,作者带着明确的目的去公园,却发现两岁的孩子本就不需要所谓的目标,这是他学到的第一课,即他的计划不符合孩子的天性。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“He had a sense of wonder. As soon as we entered the park, he looked up at the sky and found joy in watching the clouds. Next, he stared at the trees, laughing as he tried to catch the rustling leaves. At that moment, nothing could have amused him more. His curiosity was constant, endless. He was always on the search for sticks. He scraped the ground with them, rapped a drumbeat with them on trees and benches, and waved them in the air like a flag.(他对世间万物都满怀好奇。
根据文章第三段“Rio said hi to everyone and stuck out his hand for a high-five with a few 4-and5-year-olds, who weren't sure how to respond. But they all said hi back. He tried to strike up conversations with enthusiasm. It was clear he didn't care what people looked like or how old they were. No judgment. No fear. Just a sincere desire to connect.(Rio跟每个人都热情打招呼,还伸出小手,想和几个四五岁的小朋友击掌。
根据文章最后一段“I had expected to be the teacher, but I had it backward. My grandson helped me remember things we’re born knowing but forget in the process of becoming an adult.(我本以为自己是那个施教的人,结果却恰恰相反。我的小孙子,让我记起了那些我们生来就懂,却在长大成人的过程中渐渐遗忘的本心与道理。)”以及上文提到的Rio展现的活在当下、对世界满怀好奇、真诚无芥蒂地与人联结等特质可知,作者的这段经历,核心是从孙子身上重拾了那些人类生来就懂,却在长大成人的过程中逐渐遗忘的生活智慧,也让作者体会到了这份遗失的智慧的珍贵。故选B。

根据第三段中的“Experiments on Portia, a genius among jumping spiders, show they can locate prey from afar, lose sight of it, and then approach from behind. Water maze (迷宫) tests further confirm this: jumping spiders, which avoid water, choose the safest exit route more than 25% of the time, indicating they assess risks in advance.(对跳蛛中的天才波西亚的实验表明,它们能远距离定位猎物,在失去猎物视野后,从后方接近猎物。水迷宫测试进一步证实了这一点:不喜水的跳蛛有超过25%的时间会选择最安全的出口路线,这表明它们会提前评估风险)”可知,对波西亚和水迷宫的实验证明了蜘蛛会做出着眼未来的选择,还能判断风险。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“While many behaviors like web-building and hunting are natural, practice refines these skills, and spiders show flexibility — repairing damaged webs instantly when threads are cut.(虽然结网、捕猎等许多行为是蜘蛛的本能,但练习会refines这些技能,而且蜘蛛表现出很强的灵活性——当蛛丝被弄断时,它们会立即修复受损的蛛网)”可知,本能的技能经过练习会得到提升,且后文的灵活表现也印证了这一点,因此“refines”的意思是“改进、提升”,与improve意义相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Numerous questions about spider cognition remain. Comparative studies, such as exploring whether specialist spider predators (which hunt dangerous prey like other spiders) have more advanced cognitive skills than generalists, could unlock more secrets about how genes and environment shape these tiny but remarkable creatures’ intelligence.(关于蜘蛛认知的诸多问题仍未解开。对比研究,比如探究专门捕食其他蜘蛛等危险猎物的蜘蛛是否比广食性蜘蛛拥有更高级的认知能力,可能会揭开更多关于基因和环境如何塑造这些微小却非凡的生物的智力的秘密)”可知,最后一段的主旨是关于蜘蛛认知的许多奥秘仍未被解开。故选B项。

【答案】12 C 13. D 14. D 15. A

____19____, when shopping for moisturizers, but Dr.
C. It’s not what you would normally think
D. Too much water exposure will dry your skin

注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just as Tiegan finished one of her favorite songs, a man with a small dog stopped in front of her. He had a kind smile on his face and said, “Young lady, your voice is like a little piece of heaven. It made my day brighter.” With that, he reached into his pocket and dropped a few coins into Tiegan’s cap. Surprised but delighted, Tiegan stuttered out a “thank you”. The man then walked away, his dog trotting after him. Encouraged by this, Tiegan started singing another song, her voice even more confident. More people passing by paused to listen. Some smiled, some nodded in approval, and others dropped coins into her cap.
By the end of the afternoon, Tiegan’s hat was full. She stared at the collection of coins in amazement. It wasn’t just the money that made her heart swell; it was the realization that her singing brought joy to others. She carefully picked up her hat, feeling a new sense of purpose. When she got home, she couldn’t wait to tell her parents. “Dad, Mom, look what happened today!” she exclaimed, pouring out the coins. As she recounted the story, her parents’ faces lit up. They realized that Tiegan’s singing was something special, and from that day on, they made more room for her melodies in their home.
