The Palace Museum stays young at 100
If you want to introduce the most important attractions in China to somebody, what would you say? The Palace Museum is probably among the first few that you would mention. This year marks the 100th birthday of the Palace Museum. It has seen the change of history and grown with time.
The Forbidden City (紫禁城), where the museum stands, was finished way back in 1420. It was home to 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties and was the heart of Chinese politics for around 500 years. On Oct 10, 1925, it was changed from an imperial palace (皇宫) into the Palace Museum and opened its gates to everyone.
The Palace Museum is a treasure symbol of Chinese culture, connecting the past with the present. It has a large collection of art from thousands of years of history, including paintings, calligraphy, jade, and even everyday items used by emperors. What used to be imperial treasures are now shared with millions of visitors each year.
But the Palace Museum is not stuck in the past. Now it uses modern technology to protect its treasures and enhance the visitor experience. There are digital records to save art for the future, and you can even take online and VR tours to explore the museum without leaving your home.
Today, the Palace Museum is as lively as ever. It’s popular with young people, thanks to fun cultural products like luggage tags and fridge magnets with creative designs. According to China Daily, most visitors are young, which shows that even after 100 years, the museum is more about staying fresh and exciting than getting old.
43. Why is the Palace Museum important in Chinese culture?
A. It was built in 1420 and has a long history.
B. It connects the past with the present as a cultural treasure symbol.
C. It used to be the home of 24 emperors.
D. It offers online and VR tours for visitors.
44. What makes the Palace Museum popular with young people?
A. Its status as a former imperial palace.
B. The large collection of ancient artworks.
C. Fun and creatively designed cultural products.
D. Its long history of around 500 years as a political center.
45. What can we infer from the fact that the Palace Museum uses digital technology?
A. It wants to attract more young visitors by following modern trends.
B. The traditional way of protecting treasures is no longer effective.
C. It is stuck in the past and afraid of changes.
D. It only cares about protecting its cultural relics.
46. When did the Forbidden City become open to the public as the Palace Museum?
A. In 1420. B. In 1925. C. 500 years ago. D. More than 100 years ago.
47. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To introduce the history of the Forbidden City as an imperial palace.
B. To explain how the Palace Museum protects its valuable cultural relics (文化遗产).
C. To show that the Palace Museum remains lively and popular after 100 years.
D. To describe the various cultural products of the Palace Museum.

Mission to protect Earth
If an asteroid (小行星) is on its way to hit Earth, what can we do to stop it?
Chinese scientists shared a plan for a near-Earth asteroid defense system (近地小行星防御系统计划) in September. To test this plan, China will carry out its first defense mission around 2030 to change an asteroid’s path. This asteroid is called 2015XF261. It is bigger than a school bus and will pass close by Earth, according to Space Reference (《太空参考》).
Aren’t asteroid impacts (撞击) on Earth rare? Well, huge ones, like the one widely believed to have killed all dinosaurs, only happen about every 50 million years. But smaller events are more common. For example, in 2013, an asteroid exploded above Chelyabinsk, Russia. Nearly 1,500 people were hurt.
China plans to use a kinetic impact method (动能撞击法). They will send up two spacecraft—an impactor and an observer—in 2027. The observer will watch the asteroid and guide the impactor to hit it at around 6.5 kilometers per second at the right time. Then, the observer will continue to fly by the asteroid to see the effect.
NASA, the US space agency, tried something similar in September 2022. The mission cut the orbit period of the asteroid Dimorphos by 33 minutes.
However, NASA’s project depended mainly on Earth-based telescopes (地面望远镜). China’s mission will use tools on the spacecraft, such as cameras and radar. This way, more detailed information will be collected from the asteroid.
Other ways to “hit” asteroids
Gravity tractor: 引力拖拉机
Using its own gravity, a spacecraft carefully pulls an asteroid to change its path.
Laser ablation: 激光剥蚀
Lasers hit an asteroid, making tiny rock pieces break off. These pieces then push the asteroid, changing its direction.
Ion beam shepherd: 离子束引导
A spacecraft engine blows ions at an asteroid to slowly change its path.
Nuclear blast: 核爆炸
A strong enough nuclear explosion could push an asteroid away.
48. What is China’s plan to deal with near-Earth asteroids?
A. To destroy all asteroids that pass close to Earth.
B. To carry out its first defense mission around 2030 to change an asteroid’s path.
C. To use Earth-based telescopes to track asteroids.
D. To ask NASA for help in asteroid defense.
49. Why does the author mention the 2013 asteroid event in Chelyabinsk, Russia?
A. To show that huge asteroid impacts are common.
B. To prove that asteroids are always dangerous to humans.
C. To explain that smaller asteroid impacts happen more often.
D. To introduce the history of asteroid research in Russia.
50. What is the difference between China’s defense mission and NASA’s 2022 project?
A. China will use two spacecraft, while NASA used only one.
B. China’s mission will collect more detailed data using tools on spacecraft.
C. NASA’s project failed to change the asteroid’s orbit.
D. China’s mission will hit the asteroid at a faster speed than NASA’s.
51 What is the function of the “observer” in China’s defense mission?
A. To hit the asteroid at 6. 5 kilometers per second.
B. To send signals to Earth-based telescopes.
C. To carry astronauts to the asteroid for research.
D. To collect information about the asteroid and guide the impactor.
52. What can we infer from the passage about asteroid defense?
A. Humans have found a perfect way to stop all asteroid impacts.
B. Both China and the US are actively developing asteroid defense technologies.
C Small asteroid impacts will never cause harm to humans.
D. China’s asteroid defense system is already fully completed.

【答案】例文:
Growing up is a process that everyone goes through. It means learning from both success and failure. One memorable experience was when I failed a math test. I felt so sad that I nearly gave it up. But I recognized my shortcomings and decided to study even harder. I asked my teacher for help and practiced every day. Finally, I got a high score in the next exam. This taught me that hard work leads to improvement. To become better, I will face challenges bravely, learn from mistakes, and never give up.
Growth is like a path with ups and downs, but I’m ready for it.
