A lady wanted a birthday gift from her husband. For many months, she had liked a beautiful ring, and knowing her husband could afford it, she told him that was all she wanted. On the morning of the birthday, her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and how much he loved her. He gave her a beautiful gift package (盒). She opened it and found a dictionary. She raised her voice and said to her husband, “With all your money, you give me a dictionary?” After that, she left him.
Many years passed and the lady was very successful in business. She owned two large companies. She realized her husband was very old, so she thought perhaps she should go to visit him. But before she could, she received a letter telling her that he had died, and gave all of his possessions (财产) to her. She needed to come back and take care of the things.
When she arrived at his house, she was surprised to see the still new dictionary there, just as she had left it years before. With tears in her eyes, she opened it and began to turn the pages. A ring dropped from the dictionary to the floor and a card could be seen. She picked it up and found it was the ring she wanted in those days. And on the card was the date of her birth, and the words “LOVE YOU ALWAYS”.
Please remember sometimes the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, unless they are felt with your heart.

If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment(失业) from your computer major(专业课) classmates, you may have had the last laugh. There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech“Information Age”requires people who are flexible(灵活的) and who
have good communication skills.
There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions. For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial ( 管理的) success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Studies show that social science majors are most
suitable for change, which is the leading feature(特点) of the kind of high-speed, high-pressure, high-tech world we now live in.
Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level(入门的) positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most important quality in a
person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as "very important", by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably because of these skills that they have been offered different kinds of positions.
Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don't regret their choice of study.

I’m not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.
But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.
I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She didn’t ask to go. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day.
Living on a farm without any neighbors, I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a usual family’s. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me.
What worries me most is that she has become a “mini-me”. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.
After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. “I need you for a few more minutes,” she told me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).
I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp’s workers. “Excuse me,” I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed her and then I disappeared before she realized I was gone.
On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.
When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought to myself, “I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don’t want to see only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don’t set her free, I fear I’ll never really meet her real personality.”
After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.
12. Sally would be away from her mother for ______.
A. a day B. a week C. a month D. a year
