But what about our sense of hearing? Does sound also affect our dining experience? A new report answers, “yes, it does.” That answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University in the United States. They found that hearing is important in the eating experience. Hearing is often called “the forgotten food sense”, says Ryan Elder. Elder is an assistant professor of marketing at Brigham Young University’s Mariou School of Management. He says that if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less. On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating. For the study, the researchers wanted to test whether the sounds of eating — chewing, chomping and crunching (嘎吱声) — had any effect on how much a person ate. During the experiments, the rest subjects wore headphones and listened to noise at either a high or low audio level. Then researchers gave them a crunchy snack: pretzels. The study found that subjects who listened to the higher volume noise ate more pretzels than those with the low audio levels. Elder says that when hiding the heard sounds of eating, like when you watch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take away the sense of hearing. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally. The researchers are calling this, the “crunch effect”. The researchers admit that the effects may not seem like much at one meal. But over a week, a month or a year, all that food can really add up. 46. Which sense is often ignored in the eating experience? A. Sight. B. Smell. C. Hearing. D. Touch. 47. Who would find this article helpful? A. People who like watching TV. B. People who care about losing weight. C. People who want to eat healthy food. D. People who enjoy cooking food. 48. What’s the purpose of the researchers using “pretzels” during the experiments? A. They are delicious. B. They are good for health. C. They are more available. D. They can make loud noise. 49. Why might watching loud TV while eating lead to overeating? A. Because it makes people eat faster than usual. B. Because it distracts people from feeling full. C. Because it hides the sounds of eating food. D. Because it increases people’s interest in food. 50. Which can be the best title for the passage? A. Better Hear Than Eat B. Be Sensitive to Your Eating habits C. Be Mindful of Whatever You Eat D. Want to Lose Weight? Listen to Yourself Eat 【答案】46. C 47. B 48. D 49. C 50. 根据第四段中的“He says that if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less. On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating.(他说,如果人们注意到吃东西时食物发出的声音,可能会吃得更少。另一方面,吃饭时看声音很大的电视或听喧闹的音乐会掩盖这些声音,这可能会导致暴饮暴食。)”以及全文围绕听觉与进食量的关联展开可知,关注体重想要减肥的人会觉得这篇文章有帮助。故选B项。 【48题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“For the study, the researchers wanted to test whether the sounds of eating — chewing, chomping and crunching (松脆的) — had any effect on how much a person ate.(在这项研究中,研究人员想要测试进食的声音——咀嚼、大嚼和嘎吱的声音——是否会对一个人的进食量产生影响。)”以及“Then researchers gave them a crunchy snack: pretzels.(随后研究人员给了他们一种松脆的零食:椒盐卷饼。)”可知,研究人员在实验中使用椒盐卷饼是因为这种食物能发出较大的进食声响,契合实验测试进食声音的需求。故选D项。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据第六段中的“Elder says that when hiding I heard sounds of eating, like when you watch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take sway the sense of hearing. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally. When I was a little girl, my father would read me a story every night. Sometimes he would make up a story, and ask me to add to it. This was always great fun. And, every once in a while my father would tape these bedtime moments. As I got older, other moments came about. One of my favorites was spending an entire day with my father on his day off. which he lovingly called “Daddy-Daughter Days.” In the summer, we would play mini golf or go swimming; in the winter, we’d build a very creative snowman. We had so much fun together. After I became a teen, I was more interested in being with my friends than spending time with my parents. I’m sure my father especially missed Daddy-Daughter Days. I recall a particular Saturday when I was 15. My father asked if I’d like to spend the day playing golf. “No, thanks, Dad,” I told him. “I’ve got plans to be with my friends today.” “I see,” he replied, looking disheartened, and then added, “If you change your mind, let me know, okay?” A few days later, I found an old cassette tape (盒式磁带) and a tape recorder on my dresser after school. I played it and heard my 4-year-old voice singing the ABCs, then saying happily, “I love Mommy, Grandma, Daddy, and everyone!” After that was my father’s gentle goodnight. Tears welled up in my eyes. C Because it hides the sounds of eating food. D. Because it increases people’s interest in food. 50. Which can be the best title for the passage? A. Better Hear Than Eat B. Be Sensitive to Your Eating habits C. Be Mindful of Whatever You Eat D. Want to Lose Weight? “I’ve got plans to be with my friends today.” “I see,” he replied, looking disheartened, and then added, “If you change your mind, let me know, okay?” A few days later I found an old cassette tape (盒式磁带) and a tape recorder on my dresser after school. I played it and heard my 4-year-old voice singing the ABCs, then saying happily, “I love Mommy, Grandma, Daddy, and everyone!” After that was my father’s gentle goodnight. Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew the tape was his way of telling me he missed our old days. At that moment, I felt deep love for him and promised never to let my busy life take away our time together. 51.
