Today was an exciting day! I am the star of my soccer team. I kicked many goals this season and practiced every day. I’m also the fastest runner on the team.
But this afternoon, a new girl named Selena joined our team. My friend Tara whispered (耳语), “She looks like a talented (有天赋的) player.” I felt worried. I wanted to stay the best!

One day, the man’s wife asked him, “The oranges are always sweet, so why do you do that?” “The old woman sells sweet oranges, but she never eats them herself. I do this so she’ll try one without losing money,” the man answered.
A boy saw this happen every day. He asked the old woman, “Why do you keep giving him more oranges even though he is not friendly to you?” The old woman smiled and said, “I know what he’s trying to do. He wants me to eat an orange. Why do some people look happier than others? The good news is that you may be one of them if you follow these habits of happy people from my book Find Your Happiness.
Make possible goals. Happy people are great goal makers. They work hard for their goals every day. Ask yourself if you are making possible goals and if you can achieve them by working hard.
Don’t use the word “luck”. When you look at happy people, you may say, “They are so lucky.” But in fact, the word “luck” is not in their dictionaries. Instead, they believe that confidence brings great results.
Don’t try to win in an argument (争吵). Happy people are busy making their goals come true. They understand that spending time fighting with others takes them away from what they care about most. They love hearing people talk about their ideas, but they won’t spend time trying to force (逼迫) people to accept their ideas.
Try to look farther. Happy people don’t spend much time thinking about happiness. They live for now and enjoy their life. Happy people have difficulties too, but they see them as chances to learn more and grow better.
Want to be a really happy person? Follow these habits and try to change yourself into what you wish to be like.

There are many reasons why you may forget to smile. You may be worried about your life or you may be busy with other problems. Here are a few reasons why you should smile.
To let you be beautiful. Wearing make-up (化妆) can only make you look beautiful on your face. Real happiness comes from your deep heart and it shows on your face only through a smile. If you want to look attractive (吸引人的), smile.

To help you make more friends. If you forget to keep a smile on your face, you should do it right now. When you want to start conversations with people or know someone better, you have to be as a friendly person, so people can believe in you. Smiling is an easy way to help you make it.

Do you know how weather affects our lives? Well, it affects where we go, what we do, and what we wear. And it also affects how we feel and behave (表现). It is a big part of our lives!
We often use weather expressions to describe (描述) how we feel. For example, if we are feeling ill, we say we are “under the weather”. If we are feeling stressed and busy, we can say that we are “snowed under”. We use “bad” weather (rainy, stormy etc.) to describe a bad mood (心情), and “good” weather (sunny, warm, etc.) to describe a good mood.
And that is not all. The weather can even change the way we feel! For example, sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D (维生素D). This vitamin can improve our mood. But some parts of the world get less sunlight in winter, so people can feel unusually sad then. However, when it is hot and sunny, some people may get angry easily too! Scientists are still studying how the weather changes the way people feel and behave.
These days, many of us spend less time outside than in the past. Getting no fresh air or sunlight and spending too much time inside can make us feel down. It is very important to go outside once in a while, whatever the weather, rain or shine!
1.Which of the following weather expressions can describe being stressed and busy?
A.We are “snowed under”.
B.We are “on cloud nine”.
C.We are “under the weather”.
2.If people in some parts of the world get less sunlight in winter, what might happen?
A.They may become happier.
B.They may get angry easily.
C.They can feel unusually sad.
3.What can make people feel down according to (根据) the passage?
A.Going outside once in a while.
B.Spending too much time inside.
C.Getting enough fresh air or sunlight.
4.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.Weather Language
B.Weather and Mood
C.How to Stay Happy in Different Weather
重难语篇练习
Does happiness matter? People have different opinions. Some think there are more important things to worry about, while others believe happiness is what everyone wants in life. To understand this, we first need to understand what happiness really means.
Happiness is about our feelings, but it’s more than just a short moment of smiles or laughter. Instead, happiness is how we feel about our lives overall. Every day, we feel many different emotions. For example, feelings like fear and anger help protect us from danger, while happy feelings like joy and hope help us make friends and solve problems. Being happy doesn’t mean we should never feel sad or angry. Everyone has difficult times, and it’s normal (正常的) to have these feelings. True happiness means enjoying good times while also learning to deal with hard times.
Research shows happiness plays an important role in success. Some might think happy people are less hardworking, but research shows the opposite is true. They actually perform (表现) better in their jobs, maintain better health, and build stronger relationships. In one study at Warwick University, scientists put participants (参与者) into two groups. The first group watched a happy, funny video while the second group watched a normal video. After watching, both groups did the same office task. The results showed that the first group did their tasks 11% better than the second one.
Other researchers have found similar results. For example, business researchers studied companies for many years and found that companies with happier workers always did better in the market. Also, when scientists followed young people for many years, they saw that those who were happier in childhood usually were more successful when they grew up than those who were less happy. One of the reasons is that happiness can wake up the control center in children’s brains, to help weigh options more clearly, like choosing “study first, play later” instead of wasting time. In other words, happiness may lead to success, not just come from it.
Of course, happiness doesn’t solve all problems. Happy people still have difficulties, and not all happy people are successful. But happiness does make life better in many ways. In the end, happiness is more than just a feeling. It helps us succeed, makes society stronger, and gives life its real meaning.
1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Happiness is not only a moment of joy. B.What the true meaning of happiness is.
C.It is natural to have different feelings. D.Happiness is about people’s feelings.
2.What does the expression “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Happiness is good for relationships. B.Hard work makes people successful.
C.Happy people could do better work. D.Success leads to better health.
3.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Happy workers did 11% more work than less happy ones.
B.A happy childhood can ensure a happier life in adulthood.
C.Happiness makes people overcome the bad feelings.
D.Happiness can help people make better decisions.
4.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss different people’s ideas about happiness.
B.To compare happy people with others in research.
C.To tell us that success is the key to happiness.
D.To show that happiness is important for success.
Unlocking Real Happiness
When I was your age, my mom always told me, “I just want you to be happy. “She didn’t care what I grew up to be as long as I promised to stay happy. But what exactly is happiness? Is it a destination (目的地), or is it more like a road that never ends?
Is happiness on social media? It sure seems that way. People love posting perfect pictures of their best moments online. But if you ever want to feel bad about your life, just jump online and scroll through (滚屏浏览) those posts. Platforms like Weibo and Xiaohongshu make us believe that we could be prettier, healthier, wealthier, and of course, happier. Plenty of research has linked (联系) social media use to low moods (心情). One U.S.study found that people who use social media for more than two hours a day are twice as likely to feel lonely.
________ When we share a happy moment, we must have felt happy, right? Well, yes, but over the years, I’ve come to discover—and experience—the “hedonic treadmill.” We get excited when something good happens, but after a short time, we return to feeling the same as before. In other words, happiness only lasts for so long. As the effects (影响) of one “happy” moment wear off, we set out in search (搜寻) of new sources of happiness. And social media has made this search harder than ever.
Happily, there’s still hope for us to find lasting happiness:It’s called “emotional authenticity.” This happens when we allow ourselves to feel and process emotions (情绪) like anger, disappointment, fear and sadness. It’s not easy, but when we are honest about our experiences, we build deeper and more meaningful connections with others. And those friendships bring us smiles that last much longer than any number of “likes” on a screen!
March 20th is World Happiness Day. Take it as a reminder that happiness isn’t about chasing a picture-perfect life. Trying to be happy all the time is like trying to catch a unicorn (独角兽)—it’s just not going to happen. Instead, focus on your own journey and accept the variety (不同种类) of emotions you’ll feel along the way.
1.According to the article, it seems that happiness is on social media because __________.
A.scrolling through social media posts makes people happy
B.social media helps people form deep friendships
C.many people post their happiest moments there
D.many researchers have linked social media use to happiness
2.Which of the following can be put in ________.
A.But why do we feel lonely when we see others’ perfect pictures online?
B.But what if we’re the ones posting?
C.But how can we find happiness on social media?
D.But what should we do to keep away from social media?
3.Which line in the following chart correctly shows the change in our emotions after something happy happens to us?
A.A B.B C.C D.D
4.What does the author suggest we do with negative emotions such as anger and fear?
A.Learn to accept them bravely. B.Turn a blind eye to them.
C.Post about them on social media. D.Get rid of them as soon as possible.
5.What does the author want to tell people with the unicorn-catching analogy (类比) in the last paragraph?
A.Happiness is all around us. B.Real happiness doesn’t actually exist
C.Friendship is the key to real happiness. D.Happiness is like a road that never ends.

A man often bought oranges from an old woman. After paying, he would choose one, try a piece of it and say it tasted bad before giving it back to her. The old woman would eat the orange, smile and say, “It’s delicious.” But by then (在那时), the man was already gone (离开的).
So, it’s not really like I’m giving him more oranges—his kindness makes up (弥补) the difference.”

4.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
