二、阅读理解
It was very dark outside. I heated the food in the kitchen again, but my dad still didn’t come back from the forest. He worked as a forest ranger (护林员). In the morning, he told me he would go to check the new small trees and that I didn’t need to wait for him for dinner. But now, the wind was blowing hard and making a loud noise, like an animal. I stood at the door and called him, but he didn’t answer.
“I can’t wait any longer,” I thought. I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly.
20
The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise. I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. The flashlight was dying. Just then, I heard someone shout, “Xiaoyu? Is that you?”
It was Dad! I shouted, “Dad! I’m here!” I saw the light move, and then I saw his orange ranger clothes. I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried. “Son, why are you here?” Dad asked. Dad’s hands were cold, but he hugged me hard. “My phone stopped working. I was on my way home.” I put my face against his coat. Listening to his heartbeat, I felt safe again.

It’s widely known that eating with their families is good for children. But what you may not know is that eating together as a family is also good for parents.
When parents have dinner together with their children, they eat healthier home-cooked meals and more fruit and vegetables. That is because they want to set an example for their kids on good eating habits. Parents also try to control their bad behavior. They avoid overeating or drinking when their children are watching.
Eating dinner together helps parents build stronger connections with their children. Families turn off the TV, put away their cellphones and just have face-to-face conversations. The more parents communicate with their children, the better the relationship with them will be. The only thing better than eating dinner together is following it with a family game night.
24
When eating with their children, parents can also teach them lifelong skills. Children can learn table manners and conversation etiquette (礼仪). If you cook the meals together, you can teach your children how to become independent adults. After all, your children need to learn how to do more than just how to use a can opener.
Eating together as a family also shows good parenting skills to your children. Some teens grow up in homes that have regular (固定的) family meals. They possibly have regular family meals in their future homes. Some studies have shown the relationship between the frequency (频率) of meals people ate with their parents before growing up and the number of meals they eat with their own children.

I ran into the forest to my favorite place and sat down on my special rock. I knew no one could find me. At last I had peace and quiet. I lifted my guitar and began to play.
“Hi, Desha!”
Shocked, I found my brother James standing behind me.
“Don’t you have a basketball game to watch?” I complained (抱怨) .
“The game was almost over when I noticed (注意) you left. I thought you might like some company (陪伴).”
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet?”
James studied me for a minute, “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it?”
28
“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie, but when I went to my room, Sarah was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”
James sighed and said, “I left the same way when I was your age. But now. . . ”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share anymore.”
James smiled, “It is great to have my own room, but sometimes I really miss Daniel. We used to talk about everything—sports, school, friends. . . Although sometimes it seemed crowded, it was comforting (令人安慰的) to have someone else there.”
29
“Yeah, ‘crowded’ is right.” I said.
“I know.” James said. “But there are some good things that come out of it—we share memories and jokes no one else understands and we can support one another in face of difficulties.”
I sighed.
“Didn’t Sarah stay up half the night with you last week helping you with your homework?” James asked.
I admitted (承认) unwillingly. “Yeah, sometimes she can be all right.”
“This place can be your ‘room’. Anytime you need peace and quiet, just come here,” James said, pointing at a rock.
I was surprised to see James’ name there!
James smiled, “This is a great place for getting away.”
Leaning (依靠) on brother’s shoulder, I thought, “Maybe family is not bad.”

Emma lived in a village. Most of the time it was hot. The hot weather meant that Emma could sleep on the roof (屋顶) of the house with her grandmother. Grandmother would sing songs and Emma would fall asleep quickly.
One day, Emma’s dad said that they would move to England because he had got a new job there. It was a great message but Emma had mixed feelings. She was excited to live in a new country.
But she was also sad because she knew she would be leaving her grandmother. Her eyes filled with tears as she hugged Grandmother and said “goodbye” .

As the plane landed, Emma’s mind was filled with new things. The sadness left her. It was hard at first to make sense of it all, but Emma liked the place. Oh, however, it was much colder than that in her hometown! She dreamed about the warm nights sitting next to Grandmother under the stars. Emma wrote to Grandmother, “I love and miss you, Grandmother, especially at bedtime.”
Weeks passed. Then one day, Emma received a parcel (包裹) from her grandmother. She opened it as fast as she could. Inside she found a colorful blanket (毯子) and a note on it. The note said, “My Emma, I have made this for you. In the blanket is my love for you. It will always keep you warm. Love, Grandma.” Night-time seemed to get warmer for Emma from that day on.

Here are some tips about how to have a great relationship with your parents.
Respect each other.
Without respect, any relationship will be an unhappy one. People who respect each other, value each other’s opinions, listen to each other, and disagree without screaming (尖叫) or insults (辱骂). And remember your parents have lived longer than you—don’t discount (低估) their experience and knowledge.
Communicate.
Your parents want to know what’s going on in your life. If you keep them in the dark, they won’t know when you need their help or whether they can trust you. Tell them what you’re up to, share your thoughts and feelings with them, and seek their advice for your problems.
38
Build trust.
Trust is your key to freedom. The way to build trust is through honesty. Honesty means you don’t lie.
When your parents trust you, it’s a lot easier for them to say “yes”.
However, these guidelines don’t always work. Since we can only control what we do, and not what our parents do, sometimes we are truly helpless to change a bad relationship. If this is the case, try to use these guidelines to at least improve things a little, and talk with a trusted adult who may be able to help you.

5. What other tips can you give to have a better relationship with your parents?
