二、阅读理解
In the fall of 2022, my husband got a chance to spend three years in Nanjing teaching international law. When we got to China, I began to study Chinese. It was really hard for me to speak putonghua.
For me, it wasn’t the grammar. “I want to buy this book” is pretty straightforward: “我想买这本书”. And I could memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean something different. Take the sound “jiàn” for example, it always leaves me guessing—the warship (舰) or the arrow (箭), to meet (见) or to build (建) ?
7
Then, somewhere along the way, I started talking to people around me in chinese. I tried to communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables. Sometimes I talked to taxi drivers about the songs on the radio. Gradually I could listen to songs and understand the lyrics without looking them up. I finally reached the point where I could enjoy living in china without using a dictionary.
Now, as our year is up and we pack up to leave, I’m finding my Chinese has improved. I search Baidu maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone contacts in Chinese, and send wechat messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly, I don’t worry about my performance anymore and enjoy every experience to speak Chinese. Every language is different. For me, finally, I’ve learned that the key to learning Chinese is to enjoy living in China.

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area.”
11
Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in washington D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids, we usually use English songs to teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.” “Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I would speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you still have problems in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

Do you understand English better than you can speak it? That’s really normal. It’s the process of learning. Probably you have a lot more practice in listening and reading than in speaking. But speaking practice is equally essential for truly mastering the language. Here are some practical ways to help you improve your speaking skills.
One effective way is to actively use new words and phrases in imaginary conversations. When you learn a new word, think about how you can use it in your next conversation. For example, once you learn the word “excited”, imagine saying “I’m excited about the school trip next week!” practice by talking to yourself can help you feel more confident when speaking in a real-life context.
三、阅读表达(2025 邯郸二模)
22
Another helpful way is to connect new words and phrases to your existing (已有的) knowledge, like related words, company names, or song lyrics. Suppose you learn “ambitious (雄心勃勃的)”. You can think of a hard-working classmate and say, “He is so ambitious that he always sets high goals for himself ”. This makes it easier to remember new words.
Moreover, instead of just translating words in your head, write down any new words you learn in a complete sentence with a context. If you learn “efficient”, you can write “our new study method is more efficient than the old one”. Instead of a word for word translation, this helps you remember the sentence structure and how the word is used naturally.
23
Most importantly, avoid relying on a translator or AI. When you can’t think of an English word, try to describe what you mean in other English words. For example, if you can’t remember “elevator ”, say “the thing we use to go upstairs”. This trains your brain to think in English. This practice is crucial (关键的) because we won’t always have a translator at hand.
Remember, improving speaking skills requires active practice and progress takes time. So stay patient and keep practicing, and you’ll gradually speak more fluently.
