Curt McArdle, a British man, has been in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区) for about five years. He teaches English in Hohhot. When he is free, he likes making videos about his trips to villages near Hohhot. He has shared more than 10 such videos on YouTube.
McArdle saw the big changes in those villages during his trips over the years. The broken roads in the villages have become much better now. Hohhot has opened two metro (地铁) lines in the last few years.
“Now you can easily spend a day in a village. You can go to a restaurant to buy some food. I used to fill my bag with all kinds of foods before traveling to the villages. You can go to a small village in the middle of nowhere and pay for everything with WeChat or Alipay. There is always 5G, so I can use the map on my phone to get back to the city,” said McArdle. In some villages, people told him that they could sell local products (当地特产) easily, thanks to a growing number of visitors brought in with the help of convenient transport (交通).

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

三、叙事忆旧
A Trip to My Hometown
Last month, I went back to my hometown with my parents. My hometown is a small town in the north of China. I hadn’t been there for three years, so I was very excited.
We took a train to get there. The train ride was about 5 hours. When we arrived, my uncle came to meet us. He drove us to his house. His house is bigger than before — now it has a small garden. My aunt cooked a big dinner for us. We ate dumplings, fish and vegetables. All the food was my favorite.
The next day, we visited the town center. There are many new shops and restaurants now. I also went to my old primary school. It looked different too — there is a new playground and a library. I met my old teacher, Ms. Li. She still remembered my name, which made me very happy.
On the third day, we went to a park near the town. We walked by the lake and flew kites. The weather was sunny and warm. We took many photos there. Before we left, my uncle gave us some fresh fruit from his garden. I felt a little sad to say goodbye, but I know I will come back soon. This trip made me miss my hometown even more.

In September, Chengdu No. 1 Middle School in Sichuan held a special activity. Teachers asked students
to share the stories of their family heirlooms (传家宝). Over 300 students took part in it, bringing their heirlooms to school and telling the stories behind them.
One of the students, 14-year-old Song Zhengchen, shared his family’s heirloom—a cassette player. His grandmother bought the player in the 1980s to listen to the news. Later, his mother used it to play music tapes. When Song was younger, his mother would often play old poems for him on the player. “Today, we have many new advanced music players. Dad recently read me a speech, hoping to satisfy my endless search for answers-answers to everything. Ever since I was very young, I’ve asked countless times “What should I do?”, trying to avoid making mistakes. Maybe I feared to take my first baby step on my own I think.
During my middle school years, I changed. It was when I decided to try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast (野兽) without asking Dad for advice. Never mind that I would have to memorize lines and movements, and I would take the chance that I might fail.
On the day of audition (试镜), I kept telling myself, “If you don’t think you can do it the right way, just don’t go.” My heart was pounding; my hands were shaking so badly that I wasn’t certain whether people would hear me.
But something happened. When I opened my mouth, I found the sound was loud, powerful and sweet! And I even reached the high notes that I’d never reached! It was fantastic! I was trying bravely even though I might fail. But I didn’t. That audition wasn’t the end of the trap that kept me from trying, but it was definitely an important part of the process of growing.
That day, I realized that if I want to live my life to the fullest, I have to push myself. Because my parents, friends and teachers don’t always have the answer to “What should I do?”.
Now, I do take these chances, with baby steps, every day, like voicing my opinions in class discussions, riding my horse over a three-foot jump...
“Life is learning to deal with Plan B.” Dad stated in his speech. But I now know the Plan As I make for my life will become easier and easier with every chance I take.

But we still keep it because it holds beautiful memories of my family,” Song said.
Another student, Xiao Yao, also 14, won first prize in the activity. Her heirlooms were some food coupons (粮票) from her grandmother. These coupons were used during a time when food was scarce. Xiao was amazed when her grandmother told her stories about this difficult time. “My grandma wants me to be thankful for what we have today and to work hard for a better future,” Xiao explained.
The heirloom stories shared by the students reflect the rich history and beautiful memories of their families. These items connect them to the past and remind them of the hardships their ancestors faced.
