Last summer, I took a trip to Hong Kong. Usually, I would spend months preparing for my trips, but this time, I just packed my bags and started off. I felt a little nervous but excited to explore Hong Kong.
At first, I didn’t feel anything special. Hong Kong looked just like any other big city, with tall buildings, busy streets and lots of cars. It made me think of my home city, Mumbai. But later, I found many special things about it. Here are some of my favorite moments from this trip.
One evening I hiked up Victoria Peak to see the city lights. The sight was amazing! When it was time to go down, I chose to take the tram (有轨电车). The ride was fast and exciting!
During my stay in Hong Kong, I spent a lot of time ferrying (乘渡轮) from one island (岛) to another. One evening, I took a ferry across Victoria Harbour. The city lights shone around me as the soft wind blew through my hair. I enjoyed every second of the ride.
One day, after climbing a hill in Cheung Chau, I was out of breath. But guess what? At the top, I found a Chinese-style pavilion (中式亭子). I sat there for a long time. Everything around me was so beautiful that I didn’t want to leave.
Hong Kong is also a great place for food lovers. I don’t eat meat very often, but I couldn’t resist a bowl of beef noodles there. The beef, noodles, and even the soup were very delicious. Now I can still remember how good they tasted!

D.To show how to prepare for a trip to Hong Kong.
Skywells, or tian jing, used to play a key role in keeping people’s homes cool in southern and eastern China. Could they do it again today?
Skywells were designed to cool people’s homes naturally before air-conditioning. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor space through the opening. Because outdoor air is often cooler than indoor air, the incoming wind travels down the walls to the bottom and create airflows by replacing warmer indoor air, which rises and leaves through the opening.
Even though skywell buildings have existed in China for hundreds of years, in recent times they have often been forgotten by people who prefer modern facilities. Over the past two decades, however, they have been making a comeback. Yu Youhong, a craftsman, has spent more than 30 years bringing back skywell homes. He expects skywells to be more and more popular among younger generations because of their ventilation (通风) and lighting functions, especially as sustainability (可持续) becomes more important for new buildings.
Architects are now looking towards the principles (原理) behind skywells while designing new buildings to save energy. One example is a research centre in Jinan, Shandong province. Its 18-storey glass-walled tower block has a giant skywell in the middle. The elevators, toilets and meeting rooms are all situated around it, which helps improve the lighting and ventilation of the centre and reduces the use of energy.
Although ancient “green wisdom” like skywells continues to inspire today’s architecture, there are some challenges for bringing skywells into modern designs, according to Wang Zhengfeng, a researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Because traditional skywells are highly dependent on their natural surroundings-for example, the amount of sunlight or rainfall-it is difficult to apply them as a universal solution, she explains.
1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.What skywells look like. B.When skywells appeared.
C.Why skywells were designed. D.How skywells cool the house.
2.What does “making a comeback” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Showing importance. B.Regaining popularity.
C.Making improvements. D.Going back to the past.

A.To introduce how the building was designed.
B.To explain why architects find skywells inspiring.
C.To show skywells can be used in today’s buildings.
D.To prove modern skywells differ from ancient ones.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Skywells will be widely used in the future. B.Osing skywells needs careful consideration.
C.City environment is not suitable for skywells. D.Skywells can’t help solve environmental problems.
5.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Skywells: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times B.Skywells: The Secrets of Chinese Architecture
C.Skywells: A Green Structure Needs Improving D.Skywells: A Traditional Design to Be Protected
People can travel without much money by staying in other people’s house. Sometimes the travelers may sleep for a few nights on other people’s couch (沙发) for free. This way of travelling is called couch surfing.
Couch Surfing.org is an organization that connects travelers all around the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share their homes and hometowns with travelers from other places. In this way strangers can help strangers in order to make the world a better place.
The organization has millions of members in 238 different countries and it has changed the way of travel forever. Jamie from Australia has traveled in this way all over the world. “When I traveled before, I used to find a cheap hotel to save money, now I stay in really nice houses and apartments. But the best thing isn’t the free-living condition; it’s the people you meet. A couch surfing host will usually cook you a meal which helps break the ice. Then they’ll often introduce you to their friends and take you to the places they enjoy. Couch surfing allows you to experience a country and its culture.”
Why do people agree to let a stranger sleep on their couch? Delphine, an experienced host from Paris, has an answer. “They say that money makes the world go round but I try to help people go round the world without much money!” She says with a smile. So far, she has received more than 100 travelers. “I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and I’ve made friends from all over the world,” says Delphine, who is also a professional cook. “And of course, I like sharing French food with them.

3.Why does the writer mention the tower block in Paragraph 4?

Usually, my guests love trying it but I’ve had problems sometimes. Once I cooked roast lamb for a guest but unfortunately, when she got here, she told me she was only used to eating vegetables!”
The idea of travelling for free has even been made into a TV series. Alex and Zsolt from the US set out without any money at all. They relied on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter to ask for help. They say, “Wherever we went, we were always provided with food. All over the world, food is a common bond (纽带).” They travelled sixteen different countries and the results were turned into the TV show Around the World for free.
