I saw myself as a filmmaker, but everyone else only saw me as a clown. This job itself involved hiding my true self; I wore makeup and sometimes even masks to cover my face. For some parties, I had to dress as specific characters. The company would drop off costumes in a trash bag at a CVS parking lot, which felt like a bad drug deal. Instead of getting drugs, I received a smelly costume that had been worn by many failed actors. I would be told to dress as “Mickey Mouse” or “Sponge Bob Square Pants,” but since those are trademarked characters, I had to go as “Ricky Mouse” or “Sponge Guy Short Pants.” One night, I was given a costume to be Batman. At the time, I wore a big mustache, which I thought would be a problem for parents. I decided not to shave because I didn’t want to admit I was more of a clown than an artist. The next day, I parked far from the party site, so the kids wouldn’t see Batman arriving in my PT Cruiser. As I walked towards the party, I worried that my lack of surprise would ruin the experience. As I got closer, I regretted not shaving. When the kids finally saw my face, they burst into laughter, and I felt embarrassed. However, their laughter soon turned into cheers and applause, which surprised me. I started to feel warm and supported, something new for me. Inspired, I decided to make an entrance and began running towards the party, which made the kids cheer even louder. In that moment, I truly felt like Batman. When I arrived, the birthday boy’s dad laughed and said, “I told you, son. Batman has a mustache.” I was confused until I saw the birthday cake, which featured a Batman with a thick black mustache just like mine. The kids had initially laughed at the cake, insisting that Batman didn’t have a mustache, but the dad insisted he just shaves it for movies. My mustache accidentally helped convince the kids that I was the real Batman. That day, I realized I might not have been the hero they expected, but I was the hero they needed. I struggled with my identity as a filmmaker or a clown, but at that moment, I knew I was making a difference in those kids’ lives. 36. I started to feel warm and supported, something new for me. Inspired, I decided to make an entrance and began running towards the party, which made the kids cheer even louder.(然而,他们的笑声很快变成了欢呼和掌声,这让我很惊讶。我开始感到温暖和支持,这对我来说是全新的。受到鼓舞,我决定进场,开始向派对跑去,这让孩子们的欢呼声更响了。)”和第五段“  The kids had initially laughed at the cake, insisting that Batman didn’t have a mustache, but the dad insisted he just shaves it for movies. My mustache accidentally helped convince the kids that I was the real Batman.(孩子们起初嘲笑蛋糕,坚称蝙蝠侠没有胡子,但爸爸坚持说他只是为了看电影才刮胡子。 根据最后一段“I struggled with my identity as a filmmaker or a clown, but at that moment, I knew I was making a difference in those kids’ lives.(我曾在电影制作人和小丑这两种身份之间挣扎,但在那一刻,我知道我正在为那些孩子的生活带来改变。)”可知,作者在最后一段说他是“他们需要的英雄”的意思是他以一种独特的方式满足了他们的期望。故选B。 C Helping others isn’t just an admirable thing to do. You are also doing yourself a favor by doing so because it may extend your life. An international research team has found that grandparents who care for their grandchildren on average live longer than grandparents who do not. In contrast to most previous studies on the topic, the researchers did not include grandparents who were primary or custodial (有监护权的) caregivers on purpose. Instead, they compared grandparents who provided occasional childcare with grandparents who did not, as well as with older adults who did not have children or grandchildren, but who provided care for others in their social network. The results of the research show that this kind of care can have a positive effect on the death rate of the caregivers. Positive emotions experienced from helping others may also help fight the effects of negative emotions. Half of the grandparents who took care of their grandchildren were still alive about 10 years after the first interview, and the same applied to participants who did not have grandchildren, but who supported their children — for example, by helping with housework. In contrast, about half of those who did not help others died within five years. The researchers were also able to show that this positive effect of caregiving on the death rate was not limited to help and caregive within the family. The analysis showed that childless older adults who provided others with emotional support, for example, also benefited. Half of these helpers lived for another seven years, whereas non-helpers lived for only another four years. But helping shouldn’t be misunderstood as a panacea (灵丹妙药) for a longer life. A moderate (中等的) level of caregiving involvement does seem to have positive effects on health, but more intense involvement causes stress, which has negative effects on physical and mental health. About this kind of prosocial (助人的) behavior, lead researcher Sonja Hilbrand said, “It seems to be true that the development of parents’ and grandparents’ prosocial behavior toward their family members left its imprint (印记) on the human body in terms of the neural (神经的) system that subsequently laid the foundation for the evolution of cooperation and altruistic (利他的) behavior towards non-family members.” 41. Who are the subjects of the research? A. Grandparents who cared for strangers as volunteers. B. Grandparents who took care of grandchildren every day. C. Grandparents who were primary guardians of grandchildren. D. Grandparents who took care of grandchildren on an occasional basis. 42. What can be inferred from the findings of the research? A. Those who don’t care for others can’t live long. B. Caregiving contributes to one’s mental health. C. Caregiving has nothing to do with death rates. D. Those who have grandchildren tend to live longer. 43. What can we know from the passage? A. Helping others is the best way to live longer. B. Caring for someone definitely extends our life. C. Having a social circle can improve a person’s outcome. D. Caring for people outside of the family also provides a health benefit. 44. What does Sonja Hilbrand mainly want to indicate? A. The neural system is the direct cause of the emergence of human prosocial behavior. B. Altruistic behavior toward non-family members originates from family-based prosocial acts. C. Cooperation among humans has no connection with the prosocial behavior of ancestors. D. The prosocial behavior of grandparents has a more profound impact than that of parents. 45. What’s the main idea of the text? A. People who care for others live longer. B. Removing negative emotions is key to a longer life. C. Caregiving is associated with a higher death rate. D. Grandparents should care for their grandchildren. 【答案】41. D 42. B 43. D 44. B 45. We have been good friends for many years. Each early morning, Josie would invite me to join her in walking and she would make breakfast for me as a reward! Josie planted a lovely garden. Every flower and vegetable made its debut (首秀) once a year. There were so many kinds that I could not even recognize what was growing, and we had the freshest salads in the neighborhood all summer long! Each evening Josie and I would sit in front of the garden. We would have a chat, exchanging our world views as well as funny jokes. However, one evening, Josie was a “no-show”. Then I heard the ambulance and saw her husband and children running outside. Josie suffered a stroke (中风). Later, when I set eyes on her, she was in a wheelchair, covered in a thick blanket. She looked smaller and older than before. But how she chose to face it made me surprised. During the days when Josie had some strength, her husband wheeled her into the living room, and they watched old movies together. She called it “date time”. And during the most special days when Josie was doing well, her husband took her for a walk outside in her wheelchair. She called it “going on vacation”. Despite the fact that Josie was not expected to make a full recovery, they continued to watch movies and took lots of mini-vacations. She is grateful for listening to her grandchildren telling stories to her, smelling a summer barbecue, sharing a laugh with her favorite neighbor, and being here for another day. I am thankful for her simple life lesson: Find the positive, and you will find your reason to live. 46. What was Josie like before she suffered a stroke? Evidence shows that teaching existed in Oxford as early as 1096, and it has been ranked as the top university in the UK by The Times for many times. 36. To maintain a sense of artistic dignity. B. To keep his clown identity covered. C. To preserve the surprise for children. D. To achieve recognition as a clown. 39. What can be learned from paragraph 4 and 5? A. Mistakes can lead to surprising negative outcomes. B. Being yourself can lead to expected acceptance. C. Laughter can transform into genuine support. D. New identity can be beneficial in amazing ways. 40. What does the author mean by saying he was “the hero they needed” in the last paragraph? A. He met their specific character demands. B. He fulfilled their expectations in a unique way. C. He provided a unique experience for them. D. He taught them to accept imperfections. C Helping others isn’t just an admirable thing to do. A. Each evening, Josie and I would sit in front of the garden.
