Labor Day Tribute (致辞): An Honor to the Backbone of Our Nation
This Labor Day let’s pay an honor to the hands that worked hard to build our dreams!
Labor Day is more than just a day off from work. It is a day to celebrate the hardworking men and women who worked hard for the growth of our nation. These unsung heroes are the backbone of our society who get the wheels of success turning without ever stepping into the spotlight.
Labor Day is celebrated throughout the world. The goal is to emphasize the importance of the workforce everywhere. Laborers have faced countless challenges throughout history. They had to fight even for basic rights such as fair wages or safe working conditions. But their struggles were not in vain. Their strength and resilience resulted in better labor laws, fair wages, and safe working conditions. Employers are now bound by law to take care of the labor force under them and they can face heavy charges for negligence (疏忽). But with the changing times, the focus of this day should be on coming up with creative ways to teach laborers everywhere with skills that are the demand of today. Technology is progressing now more than ever, and so should our workforce.
To honor the laborers, the day is considered an official holiday, but Labor Day is more than just a mere holiday to enjoy time with your family. It is a day to show your gratitude for the hardworking people around you. A thoughtful way of celebrating the day is by supporting local businesses. You can make donations or just buy their products to show your support. You can bake goodies or distribute things in your neighborhood shops and attend community events. Or you can just take a moment and express gratitude for those who work hard to make our lives better.

38. What can be inferred from the passage about today’s workforce?
A. They prefer technological jobs to traditional ones.
B. They are less hardworking than workers in the past.
C. They no longer face challenges in their working conditions.
D. They need to keep learning new skills to meet modern demands.
39. The author suggests that a meaningful way to celebrate Labor Day is by ________.

The cheers at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park lasted long when the match finished. More than 5,000 fans rose to their feet, clapping and shouting as the Hong Kong men’s handball players gathered at center court — arms wrapped around one another, tears mixing with sweat. The team’s fourth-place finish marked Hong Kong’s best-ever result since first competing in the National Games nearly three decades ago.
Behind the amazing result was a story of extraordinary sacrifice. Unlike the professional teams from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong’s players come from ordinary walks of life — firefighters, flight attendants and personal trainers among them. Almost every player either gave up their job or took unpaid leave to compete. “Out of the 16 players, 15 currently don’t have full-time jobs,” said Ho Chung-ho, chairman of the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China. “There’s no stable salary. What keeps them going is just the passion for the sport.”
Handball—a fast, physical seven-a-side sport that combines the pace of basketball with the contact of rugby — has never been a mainstream sport in Hong Kong. The local handball movement began in the 1970s. Although the Hong Kong Amateur Handball Association was founded in 1970, the sport long remained on the fringe (边缘) due to limited facilities and funding. The team had to train outdoors on hard concrete courts, managing just one indoor session per week. Weather problems were common, and the unforgiving surface heightened the risk of injury. They studied match videos frame by frame, managed their diets like professionals and followed a strict training schedule matching that of national-level teams — all despite their limited resources.
The fourth-place finish was more than a statistic — it was proof that passion and discipline could bridge a seemingly impossible gap. The head coach Hui Man-pong struggled to describe the moment. “I imagined this scene many times,” he said softly. “But when it actually happened, I still couldn’t believe it was real.” For Ho, the team’s breakthrough carries meaning far beyond a single tournament. “The National Games allowed more people to see Hong Kong handball,” he said. “It brings hope and possibilities for the sport’s future development in Hong Kong.”
41. What is the primary occupational background of the Hong Kong men’s handball team members described in the passage?
A. They are students from local sports academies.
B They are retired athletes who have returned to compete.
C. They are amateurs who hold or held regular jobs in various fields.
D. They are full-time professional athletes sponsored by the government.
42. The word “unforgiving” in Paragraph 3 most closely means ________.
A. safe and modern B. hard and potentially harmful
C. comfortable and adaptable D. very smooth and well-maintained
43. What can we infer from the players’ training methods described in paragraph 3?
A. They were less devoted than professional athletes.
B. They preferred outdoor training to indoor sessions.
C. They focused mainly on physical strength training.
D. They adopted scientific and professional approaches.
44. How would you describe Coach Hui’s emotion when he said, “I imagined this scene many times… I still couldn’t believe it was real”?
A. Calm and unsurprised. B. Disappointed and regretful.
C. Proud and somewhat confused. D. Overwhelmed with joyful disbelief.
45. Which of the following could be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Passion Before Paychecks B. A Historic Moment at Kai Tak
C. Teamwork leads to Success D. The Struggle of Amateur Sports

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读表达
As towns grow and humans use more land, wild spaces get smaller. Feeding grounds, shelters and migration routes for wild creatures disappear. Animals are increasingly having to put up with sharing their natural habitats with humans. Other creatures find that their territory has been cut in two by a road, and they risk their lives trying to cross it.
Around the world, however, people are creating clever ways to help humans and wild animals avoid conflict, and live side by side. Earlier this year, work began on a wildlife bridge in Gloucestershire, England. At 37 metres wide, about half a jumbo jet’s wingspan, it will cross eight lanes of traffic. Hedgerows (灌木篱墙) either side will help guide bats and owls, while grass and trees will provide cover and food for other animals. Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy a peaceful and safe traffic-free route. Bridges, tunnels and rope crossings are popping up, showing that when people protect animals and their homes, everyone benefits.
In some cities, tall tower blocks are being designed to help animals and humans live peacefully together. These green havens (保护区) have roofs covered in plants, built-in bird boxes, flower-filled balconies (露台) for pollinators (传粉昆虫), and even special spaces for bats to sleep during the day. In Milan, Italy, there are two of these amazing tower blocks, which are wrapped in over 800 trees, 5,000 shrubs and thousands of plants, helping wildlife flourish in the Italian city.
You might not know it, but you are already helping wildlife to live with humans peacefully. Simple acts of kindness, like carefully tapping snail’s shell and lifting it to a nearby bush, or blowing a money spider from your hand to safety, all help create a better world for animals. From the tiniest bug to the largest beast, every little act helps us all share the planet peacefully.

B. They are retired athletes who have returned to compete.
【答案】41. C 42. B 43. D 44. D 45. A

【41题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Unlike the professional teams from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong’s players come from ordinary walks of life — firefighters, flight attendants and personal trainers among them. Almost every player either gave up their job or took unpaid leave to compete. “Out of the 16 players, 15 currently don’t have full-time jobs,” said Ho Chung-ho, chairman of the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China.(与中国内地的专业球队不同,香港队的队员来自各行各业——其中有消防员、空乘人员和私人教练。几乎每位队员都要么辞职,要么休无薪假去参赛。中国香港手球总会主席何仲豪表示:“在16名队员中,目前有15人没有全职工作。”)”可知,香港男子手球队队员是来自各个领域、有或曾有固定工作的业余爱好者。故选C项。
【42题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The team had to train outdoors on hard concrete courts, managing just one indoor session per week. Weather problems were common, and the unforgiving surface heightened the risk of injury.(球队不得不在坚硬的混凝土球场上进行户外训练,每周只能安排一次室内训练。天气问题很常见,而这种unforgiving场地表面增加了受伤风险)”可知,前文提到训练场地是坚硬的混凝土,后文说该表面增加受伤风险,由此猜测unforgiving意为“坚硬且有潜在危害的”,与hard and potentially harmful意思相近。故选B项。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“They studied match videos frame by frame, managed their diets like professionals and followed a strict training schedule matching that of national-level teams — all despite their limited resources.(尽管资源有限,但他们逐帧研究比赛视频,像专业运动员一样管理饮食,并遵循与国家队相当的严格训练计划)”可推断,队员们采用了科学且专业的训练方法。故选D项。
【44题详解】

【45题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“There’s no stable salary. What keeps them going is just the passion for the sport.(没有稳定的薪水。支撑他们坚持下去的,只有对这项运动的热爱)”以及全文围绕香港男子手球队队员们放弃工作、休无薪假,凭借热爱和自律取得历史性成绩展开的阐述可知,文章最佳标题为“热爱胜于薪水”。故选A项。

【答案】One possible version:
Fail Well — Learning from a Sports Loss
Last year, I lost a crucial table tennis match despite leading initially. As my opponent adapted his strategy, I grew anxious and made repeated errors. When the final point slipped away, I felt crushed, questioning all my training.
However, this loss taught me invaluable lessons. I realized that although winning is exciting, true growth often emerges from setbacks. The defeat pushed me to analyze my weaknesses calmly and practice more strategically. It helped me understand that effort isn’t just about training hard but also about learning resiliently, even when results disappoint. Most importantly, I now see a healthy life isn’t defined by constant victory but by the courage to improve after falling.
