The giraffe is the tallest animal on land. These beautiful creatures are one of the best-known species in Africa. They are known for their very long necks, long legs and the brown and white patterns that cover their bodies.
Craig Hilton-Taylor is head of the Red List program. He says in 1985, there were between 152,000 and 163,000 giraffes. But now, the number of them has fallen to about 98,000. "It is a huge tragedy and it's been sort of a silent disappearance that we just really haven't detected until now." Fifty years ago, groups of giraffes usually had 20 to 30 animals in them. Now, observers are only seeing six animals in a group. Until now the disappearance of the animals has not been observed closely. One reason could be that giraffes live in a wide area across Africa.
What is causing this decrease? Hilton-Taylor says, "The reasons are all due to the effect of people, whether it's people causing loss of habitat for the species, hunting the species for food or harvesting for medicine or for wood."
He says pollution and the effects of climate change are just a few of the other problems affecting the species. Some people are moving into protected areas where giraffes and other animals live because of a lack of rain that affects food production. Sometimes the graceful, plant-eating animals are killed for their meat. Also, civil wars in Africa make it more difficult to protect the animals.
Hilton-Taylor says giraffes can be helped. "It's not too late, and we can turn things around." Some of the ideas that work include community involvement and tourism. Tourism, for example, provides jobs for local people. He also says there needs to be a giraffe action plan put in place to observe and survey the animals across the continent of Africa. Hilton-Taylor adds that finding answers to the problems people face, like drought linked to climate change, food shortages and civil unrest, will provide answers for people to help giraffes.
19.What does the underlined word "detected" mean?

High in the snowy peaks of the Himalayas and Central Asia wander the snow leopards—animals with thick, spotted fur and piercing eyes. Often called the “ghosts of the mountains”, these animals are now facing extinction, with only 4, 000-6, 500 individuals left in the wild. The main threats they face are illegal hunting for their fur, which is sold at high prices on the black market, and the loss of their icy habitats due to climate change.
To change the reduction in numbers, conservationists like Dr. Amina Bhandari are working tirelessly to protect both the snow leopards and the communities that share their mountain homes. “For generations, herders(牧人) have seen snow leopards as a threat to their livestock(牲畜),” explains Dr. Bhandari. “When a snow leopard kills a sheep or goat, herders lose their means of earning money, so they often kill the leopards.” To deal with this conflict, her team applies two key strategies: building fences around livestock to keep leopards out, and establishing a program that pays herders for any animal lost to snow leopards. “This way, herders no longer see leopards as enemies but as part of their shared environment,” she says.
Scientists also use advanced technology to monitor snow leopards and understand their needs. Cameras hidden in the mountains catch rare images of these shy animals, while GPS collars track their movements across their living space. The collected data helps identify important habitats that need protection and allows researchers to value the impact of conservation efforts. “Snow leopards are predators(捕食性动物), and their presence shows a healthy ecosystem,” Dr. Bhandari notes. “Protecting them means protecting the entire mountain chain.”
Despite the challenges, there is hope. International groups like the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program have united 12 countries to cooperate on conservation. “Every snow leopard we save is a step toward balancing nature and human life,” Dr. Bhandari says. “We have a responsibility to make sure these animals continue to wander around their mountain homes for generations to come.”
23.Which is the reason for the snow leopardsˈ drop in numbers?
A. Lack of food and forest destruction.
B. Illegal hunting and habitat loss.
C. Natural predators and water pollution.
D. Climate change and overhunting.
24.What does Dr. Bhandariˈs team do to help herders and snow leopards live together peacefully?
A. Teach herders to legally hunt snow leopards.
B. Move herders and livestock to new areas.
C. Provide money as payments for lost livestock.
D. Kill snow leopards attacking livestock.
25.How do the scientists collect the data?
A. By identifying habitats. B. By hiding in the mountains.
C. By using high-tech skills. D. By interviewing the herders.
26.What is the authorˈs purpose of writing this text?
A. To describe snow leopardsˈ daily life in the mountains.
B. To criticize the illegal fur trade for harming snow leopards.
C. To introduce Dr. Bhandariˈs scientific research on snow leopards.
D. To encourage support for snow leopard protection efforts.

You may be attracted by pictures of animals in the wild. You might have imagined yourself taking pictures of animals that are seldom seen in the city. If you do get that chance, you may want to consider the following tips or rules.
First of all, a lot of professional photographers give respect (尊重) to these animals and the environment they are in. Just remember that you should respect the animals and the environment in case these animals bite or attack you.
Keep in mind that you are taking pictures of real, live, wild animals. A wild animal may bite to protect itself. You must be aware while taking their pictures and be gentle in all your movements. Do not feed the animals, or interact (互动) with animals that are sleeping or caring for their young.
Change the flash of your camera to natural light, so the animals will not be frightened or surprised when you start shooting. Animals do not react well when they are surprised. Be very patient. Make sure you are aware of the changes in behavior of the animal and its emotions. Be familiar with the animalsˈ natural habitat.
Now if those rules are clear, it is time for planning. Consider the weather; some animals do not go out when it is raining while some animals love the rain. Therefore, a little research on the weather will not hurt. You should consider taking pictures after sunrise and before sunset. Now if the animal is active at night, then you should prepare to fight against not only the wild but also the darkness.
An adventure in the wild will make you very excited. However, you should be well prepared, have experts to back you up, and also a permit (许可证) for doing the photo shoot. If you do not have any of these, then maybe you should consider visiting the zoo instead.
27.What should you do to show respect to the wildlife? ( )
A. Turning off the flash.
B. Caring for their babies.
C. Feeding them whenever you want.
D. Interacting with them when they are sleeping.
28.What should you consider before taking pictures with the wildlife? ( )
A. Food and water. B. Weather and time.
C. Emotions and safety. D. Place and transportation.
29.What can we infer from the last paragraph? ( )
A. Most animals love being taken photos of.
B. We have to go to the zoo to take photos.
C. Only experts have a permit to take photos.
D. There is danger while taking photos with wild animals.
30.What is the authorˈs purpose in writing the text? ( )
A. To advertise a zoo. B. To do some research.
C. To give some advice. D. To introduce some wildlife.

Animals are living creatures and most of us often forget about this. Although they canˈt speak our language, they can understand us. But some people treat them badly. Being stronger than them doesnˈt mean that humans have the right to treat them badly. (31) So they need you to help them. You donˈt have to spend money, though. Here are a few ways you can contribute to animal welfare.
Volunteer at the local animal shelters
If you canˈt give money to animal shelters, you can visit a local animal shelter and offer your help. (32) You can do the simplest things such as feeding animals or taking dogs for a walk.
Report any form of animal abuse
If you know someone hits their pets to death or doesnˈt feed them for weeks, report abuse. No one has the right to abuse animals or leave them hungry or sick. Donˈt keep silent. (33) This way, you may save the lives of those poor animals.
(34)
It is one of the easiest ways to reduce the demand for animal products. While meat tastes delicious, think of how one animal is killed so that you can eat that steak.
Stop buying items that contain animal products
Break a habit of buying things that contain animal products. Many beauty items, especially face creams, lotions and lipsticks, contain animal products. So be sure you donˈt buy them. (35)
Animals deserve to live their lives free from abuse, pain and suffering. They are sensitive, emotional, and intelligent. They are living creatures that need our help. Donˈt neglect them.
A.Have a plant- based diet
B.Feed wild animals and birds
C.Let others know how that person treats animals.
D.You donˈt have to have any special skills in helping animals.
