At church, Mrs Thatcher talked to Mrs Harper and found out that Becky had not slept there last night. Where was she? Then Aunt Polly said Tom had not come home either. They asked if anybody had seen them on the boat. Nobody could remember.
“They must still be in the caves!” said somebody.
A large group of men went to the caves to search for the two children. They searched all day. They searched for three days, but they did not find Tom or Becky. Where could they be?
At the picnic, Tom and Becky went into the caves with the other children. They took their candles and walked down a small tunnel. Then Tom saw a small opening he had never seen before. He decided to explore. Becky came with him. They made some marks on the wall. This would help them find their way back. They found a large cave with a spring in it. There were a lot of bats hanging on the roof. The bats did not like the candlelight and attacked the children. Tom and Becky ran. They did not watch where they were going. They escaped from the bats and found a lake. They sat down to rest.
“We haven’t heard the other children for a long time,” said Becky.
“We’d better go back,” suggested Tom.
They tried to find a way back without going through the cave with bats. They were soon lost. They didn’t know how to get back. They began to shout. Nobody answered.

People and dogs have been living together for hundreds of years. When did dogs and people become friends? Where did dogs come from?
A group of scientists tried to answer these questions. They just finished a study about the history of dogs. In the study, they looked at the DNA of dogs all over the world and found that dogs, like humans, shared DNA with their family members. The scientists put together a big family tree for dogs. It went all the way back to the animal’s beginning.
In this way, scientists learned about the history of dogs. The first dogs lived in Asia. They were born about 33,000 years ago. At first, there were only about 6,400 of them. Their parents were wolves.
The new study answers many questions. It raises some too. For example, what caused wolves in Asia to become dogs all those years ago?
One idea is that their DNA slowly changed and the wolves became dogs in the end. As time went by, dogs became “man’s best friends”. Or it could happen the other way around. It was possible that some wolves started living with people before they became dogs. Living with people led to many changes to these wolves. It changed their DNA, so their offspring (后代) became dogs. In other words, it was possible that the wolves were our friends before they became dogs.
By studying DNA, scientists now have a much better understanding of the history of dogs.
▲ . How exactly dogs came to be our friends is still unknown.
27.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving an example.
C.By asking questions. D.By making a comparison.
28.What can we learn about the first dogs according to the passage?
A.They lived in Africa. B.They were born 6,400 years ago.
C.Their parents were wolves. D.There are about 33,000 dogs.
29.What does the underlined word “some” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.wolves B.dogs C.ideas D.questions
30.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.However, there is still much to learn
B.But we still know little about wolves’ history
C.Because we’ve learned about dogs’ friends
D.So they can explain when dogs became our friends
D
①Have you ever heard that groundhogs can predict (预测) the end of winter? How about that elephants never forget things? Or that dogs can smell the strange? That may not be 100% true. However, many animals do have stronger senses than humans.
②Do animals have a sixth sense that can tell the future? That may sound out of this world. However, many events seem to support this idea.
③Thousands of years ago, a big earthquake hit Helike, Greece. Buildings came down. Many people were hurt. But there was something amazing. The city’s animals acted strangely days before the earthquake. Rats and snakes ran from the city in groups. Did they know an earthquake was coming? In 1975, one million people had to leave their hometown, Haicheng, Liaoning Province with the help of Chinese government. Why? They believed a disaster was coming. They thought this, in part, because of animals’ strange behaviours. Just days later, a large earthquake hit the city. Experts (专家) said 150,000 could have lost their lives if people stayed in the city at that time. In December 2004, the animals of Sri Lanka were acting strange. Elephants ran around. Dogs wouldn’t go outside. Zoo animals wouldn’t leave their home. Soon after people saw these strange behaviours, a tsunami (海啸) hit the island.
④Animals seem to be pretty good at predicting (预测) disasters. But it doesn’t stop there! Some of them even seem to sense small changes in the weather before they happen. Bees are known to find places before it rains. Dairy farmers say they can tell a big storm is coming when their cows lie down. Cats and dogs are also said to know when a storm is on its way, as are birds and turtles. Can animals really tell the future?
⑤Experts say it’s unlikely (不可能的) that animals can tell the future. However, they might hear or feel the earthquake before people do. Even though scientists have not proved animals have the ability to predict disasters before they happen and animals’ predictions aren’t always right, it’s not bad to pay attention to the animals.
31.According to the passage, we know many animals ________.
A.can tell the future in different ways
B.have better sense abilities than humans
C.act strangely after some natural disasters
D.use the sixth sense to predict earthquakes
32.The word “behaviours” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.actions B.senses C.ideas D.feelings
33.How many examples do the writer use in Paragraph 3 to support the idea that animals can tell the future?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four D.Five.
34.What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Animals are good at helping farmers.
B.Animals are good at finding their homes.
C.Animals seem to know the future problems.
D.Animals seem to know the weather changes.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Can Animals Predict the Future?
B.Do Animals Have Stronger Senses?
C.How Do Animals Save People’s Life?
D.What Are Animals’ Ways to Tell the Future?

Jim: Yes. They are very close. The weather is hot and windy. The conditions are ideal for bushfires and once they get started they spread quickly. Yesterday the temperatures hit 44°C and there were reports of over 50 fires in the area. It will take days to put them out.
Mark: Have you seen any fires?
Jim: Yes, I have. I’m staying with my uncle Ted. He’s a volunteer firefighter. He says the fires have killed a lot of animals, but no people. He says that the safest thing is to stay inside unless your house catches fire!
Mark: Is it safe where you are?
Jim: We’re fine. We listen to the radio to keep up to date with the latest news. So we know if a fire is coming our way. One got very close yesterday. Three houses nearby caught fire. Luckily, the families put the fires out before they did too much damage.
Mark: Are you worried? Do you think you will need to move to a safer place?
