Dear Mr White, To be honest, I hated you when I first met you. I hated having to stand up straight, and I hated the way you made me wear my uniform right. What I hated most was that you wouldn’t accept my homework unless it was my best. We had lots of arguments. Sometimes I even shouted at you, but you never lost your temper (发脾气). You were always patient with me. When I look back, that time is very important for my growth. Not only did you teach me English, but you also showed me that I could achieve more than what I or anyone else thought I could. Thank you, my dear teacher! Sincerely, Nick Dear Miss Smith, If I hadn’t had you as my teacher in the seventh grade, my life would be different. You showed me who I could be and what I could do. I still remember one lesson where you told us about your hopes for your future when you were our age. You shared your regrets and your successes with us. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight to the corner, turn left at a big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.” In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, “Go north two miles, turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, “Follow me.” Then he or she will take you through the streets of the city to the post office. Sometimes if a person doesn’t know the answer to your question, like a New Yorker, he or she might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People there think “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan! But one thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office! 39. What do people in Japan use instead of street names? A. Directions. B. Distance. C. Landmarks. D. Follow me. 40. How do people in Kansas tell you the way? A. They use landmarks instead of street names. B. They will tell you directions and distance. C. They will often say, “Follow me.” D. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. 41. From this passage, how do you find the place if you don’t understand a person’s words? A. We can understand his or her body language. B. The festival is created to keep the art of letter writing alive in our digital age (数字时代). For a long time, letter writing was the primary way of long-distance communication. However, the appearance of modern ways of communication, such as e-mail and text messages, has made letter writing a less popular activity. Even though the new technologies have provided us with much faster ways to communicate, letter writing is still important for a number of reasons. Writing a letter to someone shows that you really care about them, because you took the time and effort to do something people seldom do these days. Handwriting is also an important skill, because writing by hand stimulates (刺激) your brain in a different way and improves your language skills. Another reason is that writing a letter forces you to really think about what you’re writing. Far too often, we hurriedly send texts and e-mails without really thinking about the influence our words have on the receivers. With a handwritten letter, you are forced to be more careful with the words you choose. So, how do we celebrate this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. The boy got two fans at a market and used them to create small wind turbines (风力涡轮机) to produce electricity. His invention has led others to start calling him the “Newton” of Gaza. “Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head and he discovered gravity (重力),” Al-Attar said. “And we here are living in darkness and tragedy (悲剧), and rockets are falling on us, therefore I thought of creating light, and did so.” Al-Attar is staying in a tent in Rafah, a city on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip (加沙地带). Large numbers of people fled (逃) to the area from other parts of Gaza to get far away from the war. Al-Attar’s tent is next to a house. He managed to climb onto the roof to set up two fans. Su Shi, a great writer in the Song Dynasty, couldn’t sleep that night. For seven years, he had been separated from his brother. Looking at the moon and thinking of his brother, as well as the ups and downs of his life, he wrote the poem. Here are some famous lines. Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again; The moon is bright or dim and she may wax (月满) or wane (月缺). There has been nothing perfect since the olden days. So let us wish that man Will live long as he can! Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays. For the first two lines, the writer compared the life of a man to the changing face of the moon. The full moon symbolizes perfection and reunion in Chinese culture. When the moon is round and fair, people are separated from their loved ones. That’s heartbreaking. Before the comparison, Su Shi complained about the “ruthless (无情的)” moon. However, he soon realized that no one had an easy ride, just like the moon may not always be bright. That’s why the poet said “此事古难全”。 49. How does the writer start the text? A. By raising questions. B. By giving an example. C. By listing numbers. D. By offering a fact. 50. Which line of the poem expresses the meaning of “此事古难全”? A. Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again. B. The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane. C. There has been nothing perfect since the olden days. D. So let us wish that man will live long as he can! 51. In which case did Su Shi write this poem? A. His country was at war. B. He hadn’t seen his brother for seven years. C. His family went through a hard time. D. He was sent to a far-away place as an official. 52. What does the poem mainly tell us? A. Stay positive about life. B. Be confident in yourself. C. Be brave to face difficulties. D. Keep a close relationship with your family. 【答案】49. D 50. C 51. B 52. Many kids use them. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every ten kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise. Do you know how we hear? There are cells (细胞) inside the ears that help us hear. We can’t see them with our eyes. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark said. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a scientist at the University of Texas at Dallas. She studies noises and ears. Sound cannot be seen, but it can make the hair cells move back and forth. Think of the wind in the leaves. Loud noises can damage (损伤) these cells. And once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back. Sometimes there’s tinnitus (耳鸣). “It’s like someone is playing a note on the flute (长笛) for a long time,” Clark says. It shows we’re losing hearing. Tinnitus is not only harmful to our ears, but it can make us feel uneasy. That’s why it’s necessary to protect our ears. How can we protect our ears? We’d better keep the volume low when we use our headphones. We should be able to hear sounds around us. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from our headphones. Clark suggests if someone else can hear what you’re listening to when you’ re wearing your headphones, you should keep the volume at about half level to protect your ears. 53. What is the main problem with using headphones?(不超过15个词) ________________ 54. What do the hair cells in our ears do when sound reaches them?(不超过5个词) ________________ 55. Dear Mr White, To be honest, I hated you when I first met you. I hated having to stand up straight, and I hated the way you made me wear my uniform right. What I hated most was that you wouldn’t accept my homework unless it was my best. We had lots of arguments. Sometimes I even shouted at you but you never lost your temper (发脾气). B If you ask people from different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post office?”, you will get different answers. B. We can search the map from our mobile. C. We can ask the police for help. D. We can ask the people in Greece for help. C September 1st is the perfect day to pick up a pen and paper and write a letter to someone because it’s World Letter Writing Day. It could be a friend or relative who lives miles away, or someone you have lost touch with over time. Of course, you can read some famous letters. Whatever you do, please know that letter writing is still worthwhile. 42. Why is letter writing not so popular now? A. It’s so hard to write letters. B. Letters are no longer needed. C. The wind can turn the fans, which produce electricity. He then connected the fans to wires (电线). The boy said his first two tries failed, and that it took him a while to develop a working system. He was happy to create something to help reduce his family’s worries. “I hope to achieve my dream of becoming a scientist like Newton and creating an invention that will benefit not only the people of the Gaza Strip but the whole world,” Al-Attar said. 46. E The story about Prelude to Water Melody (《水调歌头》) dates back to the Mid-Autumn Festival in 1076. 53.
