On a sunny Tuesday, David, a 58-year-old history teacher, was grading papers when his left hand went numb. The world was turned upside down. Hours later, from a hospital bed, he discovered a terrifying silence in his mind. He could understand everything said to him, but when he tried to reply, only nonsense sounds came out. He was diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder caused by a stroke (中风).
Before the stroke, David’s life was built around words. He loved telling stories, debating with students, and reading novels aloud to his children. Now, he felt locked inside his own head, a prisoner of silence. Standard speech therapy felt slow and frustrating. He knew the words were in there somewhere, as if a tornado had swept through the library.
His breakthrough came not from a doctor, but from a hobby. Before his illness, David enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. One afternoon, his daughter left a simple crossword on the kitchen table. Out of habit, he picked up a pencil. To his amazement, he could slowly fill in some blanks. The clues activated a different path in his brain.
He became a “word detective.” His notebooks were filled with crossword puzzles, word searches, and lists of synonyms. He used a large whiteboard at home to map out ideas like a detective solving a case. Instead of trying to speak a full sentence, he would write key nouns and verbs on the board, point to them, and piece his thoughts together. This “detective board,” as he called it, became his new voice.
David’s confidence grew. He started a blog, typing out his recovery journey with the help of a spelling-check app. He returned to visit his school, using his whiteboard to “talk” to his former students. “I am not broken,” he wrote during one visit. “I am just learning a new way to think.”
His recovery is ongoing. Some days are good; some words still hide. But David no longer feels lost. He has learned that communication is more than perfect speech — it’s the determination to connect.
4. What can be inferred about David before aphasia?
A. He felt cut off sometimes. B. He lived quite an active life.
C. He cared about his health. D. He worked as a therapist.
5. What became a turning point for David?
A. A special notebook. B. A speech therapy.
C. A doctor’s instruction. D. A crossword puzzle.
6. What role did David’s whiteboard play in his recovery?
A. A tool for tracking his progress. B. A schedule for his daily recovery.
C. A means of personal expression. D. A source of motivational support.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Speech Therapy Experiment: Challenges in Recovery
B. Aphasia Explained: Mystery Behind Brain’s Language
C. Voice Regained: One Man’s Fight Against Aphasia
D. Crossword Puzzles: Detecting silence in Human minds

For Liu Yifan, a young resident of Hangzhou, weekend getaways with her three-year-old corgi used to mean relying on cars or taxis. Now, an exciting new option has arrived: the high-speed rail. Thanks to a recently launched pet consignment service, longer adventures with her furry companion are now within reach.
Since April 7, selected trains connecting major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou have begun offering this special service. It allows qualified cats and dogs to travel alongside their owners, with staff providing care throughout the journey. Liu was among the first to give it a try, spending about 500 yuan on tickets for herself and her pet. “I chose a short trip first, to see how my dog would handle it,” she explained. She was impressed by the professional pet transport case, which comes with features like real-time video monitoring and an air circulation system.
This move reflects two significant trends in China: a rising pet population and the rapid growth of the “pet economy.” According to a recent industry report, the urban pet market was valued at over 300 billion yuan in 2024, with more than 120 million pets nationwide. “Increasing demand is pushing the transport sector to become more pet-friendly,” said Wu Yi, an associate professor at China Agricultural University.
Beyond practical convenience, Professor Wu also points out that better pet-friendly transport does more than satisfy owners — it signals growing societal attention to animal welfare. These efforts not only encourage people to care more for pets but also help pet-related businesses grow gradually.
For many young people like Liu, pets are valued family members. This new railway service not only makes travel easier but also represents a warmer, more inclusive attitude toward our four-legged friends. As more pet-friendly options emerge, hitting the rails with a beloved companion is becoming a smoother and more joyful journey for everyone involved.
8. Why did Liu Yifan take a short trip on the high-speed rail with her corgi?
A. To see whether her dog could adapt.
B. To reach a pet-friendly destination.
C. To get the qualification for her pet.
D. To find a pet-friendly travel route.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The causes for Liu’s travel.
B. The reasons for this service.
C. The benefits of animal care.
D. The trends of the “pet economy”
10. What does the underlined word “emerge” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Grow familiar. B. Appear stable.
C. Stay sustainable. D. Become available.
11. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. Pet owners are interested in short-distance travel.
B. All pets can travel along with their owners now.
C. Improved pet transport boosts pet-related economy.
D. Pet travel by high-speed rail is convenient to everyone.
D
Artificial intelligence now allows for the cloning of a person’s voice with frightening accuracy (准确). This technology once just a thing of science fiction, is now being used by criminals in a new form called “voicejacking.” Using just a short audio clip (音频片段) — sometimes from a social media video or a recorded phone call — scammers (骗子) can clone a person’s voice and use it to trick family members, friends, or colleagues.
Voice cloning works by training an AI model on samples of someone’s speech. The system learns unique characteristics like pitch, rhythm, and accent. Once the model is built, it can make new sentences in that person’s voice, even if they never said them. This has led to a rise in “grandparent scams,” where a scammer clones a grandchild’s voice and calls an elderly person claiming to be in trouble and needing money urgently.
In one recent case in Canada an elderly woman received a call from someone sounding exactly like her grandson. He said he had been in a car accident and needed $3,500 for repairs. The woman, trusting the familiar voice, sent the money before realizing it was a scam. Police later explained that the scammer had used a video from the grandson’s Instagram account to clone his voice.
Experts suggest several ways to protect against voicejacking. One key step is to be careful about what you share online. Avoid posting voice recordings or videos that could be used to clone your voice. Another is to establish a “safe word” or a personal question that only your family members know, to check identity during unexpected calls. Finally, if you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the person back on a known number to confirm their story.
While voice cloning technology also has positive uses — such as helping people who have lost their voice to speak again — its misuse causes serious risks. Public awareness and careful online behavior are the first lines of defense.
12. What is “voicejacking” according to this text?
A. Running a special scam using clone voices. B. Recording personal voices for clone research.
C. Sharing audio clips on social media illegally. D. Stealing audio files from personal accounts.
13. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
A. How criminals employ cloned voices for scams. B. How AI models make everyone’s voice unique.
C. How voice cloning influences grandparents. D. How people make new sentences in their voices.
14. How does the author develop this text?
A. By analyzing causes and effects. B. By describing a process step by step.
C. By stating a problem and giving solutions. D. By comparing advantages and disadvantages.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards voice cloning?
A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Negative. D. Unclear.

Learning to Love Your Body: A Guide for Teens
Spring brings new energy, making it a perfect time to reflect on how we view ourselves. ____16____
Respect your body. Start by listening to its needs. Ask yourself: Am I getting enough sleep? Could I be more active? Am I eating well? If you feel worried about your body, talk to someone you trust. ____17____ Also, try to limit time spent mindlessly scrolling through social media, as it often makes us compare ourselves unfairly. When you notice negative thoughts, ask what advice you would give a friend in the same situation—and try to follow it yourself.
____18____ It’s easy to think, “I’ll be happy when…” — when I lose weight, fit into certain clothes, or look a certain way. But this thinking traps us in waiting instead of living. Instead, focus on the present and allow yourself to be happy now. True happiness comes from accepting and valuing yourself as you are today, not in some distant future.
Practise self-kindness. Self-confidence and happiness begin with self-acceptance. Just as you wouldn’t judge others harshly, avoid being too hard on yourself. Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d show a friend. Small actions — like wearing clothes that make you feel good, taking time to relax, or enjoying a walk — are ways to thank your body. ____19____ Over time, these acts help build real confidence.
Remember, you are not alone. Studies show that most people — teens and adults — struggle with body image at times. Many feel pressured by unrealistic beauty standards. ____20____ What matters most is how you feel inside. By being kind to yourself, you can learn to see your own worth and live more happily every day.
A. Live in the present, for it’s all you truly have.
B. However, your worth is not defined by your appearance.
C. Build body confidence through a gradual weight-loss journey.
D. Here is some expert advice on appreciating and loving your body.
E. Sharing your feelings can reduce stress and help you find solutions.
F. These habits show care for yourself and reinforce that you are valuable.
G. For example regular exercise can greatly improve your mood and energy.

On a cool autumn afternoon, thirteen-year-old Ben was walking home from school through the deserted park, a shortcut he often took to save time. The wind carried a sharp chill and the scent of decaying leaves, making him quicken his steps and pull his thin jacket tighter. As he passed a weathered wooden bench, a flash of dark leather against the brown leaves caught his eye.
Curious, he bent down and picked it up—a well-worn, brown wallet. He opened it. Inside was a driver’s license featuring an old man with gentle eyes and a kind smile. Behind it, to Ben’ s astonishment, was a sizeable pile of hundred-dollar bills. Ben’ s heart started beating faster. He had never seen so much money in one place. With this money, he could buy the shiny blue mountain bike he had been saving up for. It could also pay for the school trip his mother couldn’t afford. The possibilities these crisp bills represented were overwhelmingly tempting.
He looked back at the license photo, studying the man’s face. The address listed was on Maple Street, just a few blocks beyond his own home. A profound internal struggle seized him. The money felt heavy in his hand. Yet, the man’s kind smile seemed to gaze directly at him, “What if this is his rent money? What if he’s sick and needs it for medicine?” Ben stood completely frozen on the path, holding the wallet tightly. He knew he was facing an important choice.

C A means of personal expression. D. A source of motivational support.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Speech Therapy Experiment: Challenges in Recovery
B. Aphasia Explained: Mystery Behind Brain’s Language
C. Voice Regained: One Man’s Fight Against Aphasia
D Crossword Puzzles: Detecting silence in Human minds
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. C

The clues activated a different path in his brain.(一天下午,他的女儿在厨房的桌子上留下了一道简单的填字游戏题。
He started a blog, typing out his recovery journey with the help of a spelling-check app. He returned to visit his school, using his whiteboard to “talk” to his former students. “I am not broken,” he wrote during one visit. “I am just learning a new way to think.”(大卫的自信心逐渐增强。他开设了一个博客,借助拼写检查应用程序记录了自己的康复历程。他重返母校,用白板与昔日的学生交流。“我并没有被摧毁,”他在一次访问中写道,“我只是在学习一种新的思考方式。”)”可知,大卫的白板在他康复的过程中成为了他的一种个人表达方式。故选C。

C Stay sustainable. D. Become available.
11. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. Pet owners are interested in short-distance travel.
B. All pets can travel along with their owners now.

Artificial intelligence now allows for the cloning of a person’s voice with frightening accuracy (准确). This technology, once just a thing of science fiction, is now being used by criminals in a new form called “voicejacking.” Using just a short audio clip (音频片段) — sometimes from a social media video or a recorded phone call — scammers (骗子) can clone a person’s voice and use it to trick family members, friends, or colleagues.
In one recent case in Canada, an elderly woman received a call from someone sounding exactly like her grandson.

G. For example, regular exercise can greatly improve your mood and energy.

【18题详解】
下文“It’s easy to think, “I’ll be happy when…” — when I lose weight, fit into certain clothes, or look a certain way. But this thinking traps us in waiting instead of living. 【20题详解】
上文“Many feel pressured by unrealistic beauty standards.( 许多人因不切实际的审美标准而感到压力。)” B项“However, your worth is not defined by your appearance.( 然而,你的价值并非由外表定义。)”

Paragraph 2: The old man who opened the door was Mr. Jenkins. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Ben put the wallet in his backpack and started walking home, his mind full of confused thoughts. The blue mountain bike he’d dreamed of flashed in his mind nonstop, and the school trip he’d begged his mom for lingered too. But each time, the old man’s gentle smile on the license pushed those thoughts away. He thought about how scared he’d be if he lost his mom’s wallet, and how desperate the old man must feel now. His steps slowed more and more, until he finally stopped. Clenching his backpack strap, he turned around firmly and walked toward Maple Street.
The old man who opened the door was Mr. Jenkins. He was the nice old man who watered the flowers on the street every morning and once helped Ben pick up his fallen books. His eyes were filled with worry, which turned to great relief the second he saw Ben. Ben handed over the wallet shyly and told him about finding it in the park. Mr. Jenkins held the wallet tightly and thanked Ben again and again, even trying to give him some money as a reward. Ben shook his head and ran off. As he walked home, he felt lighter than ever—no bike or trip could compare to the warm joy in his heart.
