Afghanistan has its own version of the famous British comedy actor Charlie Chaplin.
His name is Karim Asir. He wears make-up and clothes to look like Charlie Chaplin in his movies. Asir also uses similar physical movements. He performs on the streets and at events in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul.
Afghanistan has dealt with many years of war and widespread destruction brought by attacks. The 25-year-old actor says his goal is to use humour to help take people's minds off the difficulties they face every day. "It is very simple. I want to give Afghans a reason to smile," he said.
Charlie Chaplin rose to fame during the silent film age of the 1920s. His movies became popular around the world. When young Asir and his family escaped to Iran in 1996, he watched Chaplin's movies on television and became fond of the actor and the characters he played. One of the characters impressed Asir most was a funny-looking man known as the Little Tramp. This character had no money and was always getting into trouble. The creative method he used to get out of trouble was always being humorous.
After returning to Afghanistan, Asir started wearing makeup and recreating Chaplin's characters. He performs in public parks, homes for needy youth, as well as private parties and international aid agency events.
"I want to give my people a chance to forget their problems such as war, conflicts, and insecurity," he said.
To do this, he keeps smiling while performing around the city and meeting with fans, but Asir says that inside, he cannot help but feel fearful about possible attacks.
"I am afraid of getting attacked, but these issues cannot stop me from being Charlie Chaplin," he said.
36. What does Asir want to do by using humour?
A. To make himself look like Chaplin.
B. To make people laugh and be happy.
C. To earn money and support his family.
D. To encourage people to face their difficulties.

B. Asir wanted to be an actor when he was a child.
C. Asir began to perform after returning from Iran.
D. Asir played the Little Tramp and became popular.
38. What did Asir concern about while performing?

D. People might feel afraid of being out in public.
39. What is the best title for this article?

How to Master Anxiety with Humour and Laughter
Anxious people very often take themselves and their difficulties too seriously. Having a good laugh is a great way to lighten up. (40) ____________________ It gets your heart and lungs functioning fast and relaxes your diaphragm—the layer of muscle between your lungs and stomach, which, when you're anxious, spends a lot of time being hard and tense.
Besides getting you to laugh for a moment, good jokes also help break through black-and-white thinking and open you up to different expectations. When you hear or read a funny story or joke, you are already expecting the unexpected. (41) ____________________ Momentarily, at least, you have changed your mindset.
(42) ____________________ Note them down so that you can look at them to help break you out of anxious thinking at a later day. Remembering funny experiences from the past is especially helpful because, very often, they weren't the least bit funny at the time. Maybe you locked yourself out of your home with no money or clothes on. It is a good reminder that even disasters aren't as extreme as they seem at the time—they can be laughed about when we view them in another way.
On average, happy children laugh over 300 times a day but adults less than 20. (43) ____________________ If you have been sad or unhappy, try watching a comedy or reading a book that makes you laugh. Or go for a walk and keep an eye out for something that will at least make you smile—the actions of dogs playing in the park, for instance, or something a young child says. (44) ____________________
A. It is also a good way to have fun.
B. You can get much more fun than usual from a joke book.
C. So, set yourself the pleasant task of laughing at least five times a day.
D. It can either be a development you can't predict or a clever punch line.
E. Remind yourself of the 10 funniest things that have ever happened to you.
F. More than that, it is an excellent way of reducing the stress your body goes through.
G. After all, looking out for the funnier side of life will offer you benefits more than just amusement.

For College Student Comedians, Laughter Coming with Learning
At a comedy night at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, members of the school's Stand-up Comedy Club bring lots of laughter to their classmates. They give funny speeches, tell jokes and make humorous body movements. These college student comedians may feel unsure of themselves at first, but the experience is highly enjoyable. Their humor entertains and helps relieve the stress of their young, busy audience.
Ariella Shua joined the club last year. She says she has become a better observer of what is going on around her. She says she does not go anywhere without bringing something on which she can take notes.
"Whenever I just have a thought in my head that seems like, 'Oh, this is strange,' or when I see something or overhear someone saying something in the library, I just write it down," Shua explained. "Later, when I'm trying to write my own set, I look through it to see if there is anything that I can use."
Every school wants its students to perform as best as they can in their studies, but some colleges and universities also urge their students to explore their abilities and develop interests beyond their field of study. Joining an on-campus club is a good way to do that.
Nicholas Scandura, the president of the comedy club, finds that writing is one of the many skills he has developed since joining the club. "Writing jokes is really fun," he said. "It takes a lot of critical thinking."
The club gives its members a sense of community. When they meet, they share funny experiences, tell jokes and laugh. Over the past ten years, stand-up comedy clubs have become common on college campuses in America. He said now everyone wants to do it because the culture of stand-up has gotten a lot of media attention and become more popular.
Last year, Harry Kuperstein joined the club and discovered it was a natural fit. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world. Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he will need as a medical doctor. "When talking to patients as a doctor, I think that having jokes ready to go might help smooth these interactions and make you a better public speaker," he said.
45. According to the passage, what is the contribution of the student comedians at Johns Hopkins University?
46. Why does Ariella Shua try to take notes wherever she goes?
47. What kind of benefit has Nicholas Scandura got from the comedy club?
48. How will the club experience benefit Harry Kuperstein's future career?

54. Recently, our classmates have been discussing the topic: who play a more important role in helping patients to fight against diseases, medical doctors or clown doctors? Different students have different opinions.
Some students think that medical doctors play a more important role. They think with professional training, medical doctors are experts on medical treatment. They know how to use diagnostic medical devices, and they can make choices of treatments according to the diagnostic results. They can help patients know their condition and receive effective treatments as soon as possible.
Other students think that clown doctors play a more important role because they can bring happiness to patients and relieve their pain with humour by telling funny stories and jokes or giving amusing performances. Scientific studies show that laughter produces chemicals to make people feel better and it may serve as part of the psychological treatments to help patients recover soon.
In my opinion, while medical doctors know professional treatments, they are not good at giving amusing performances, which are the advantages clown doctors have. Only by cooperation can they help patients to recover as quickly as possible.
