Reflection: The Bridge Between Learning and Growth
Completing a unit of study is not just about finishing exercises and passing a test. The final, and perhaps most important, step is reflection. Reflection is the process of looking back on what you have learned and how it applies to you.
For Unit 5, "Play by the rules?", reflection might involve asking yourself:
How have my views on rules changed? Did I only see them as limits before? Do I now see their role in creating fairness?
What was the most surprising or interesting idea I encountered? Was it the story of Jack and the penalty? The discussion about the "spirit of the rule"?
How can I use this learning in my own life? Can I be more sporting in
PE class? Can I be more honest in a game with friends? Can I think more carefully before I judge someone for breaking a minor rule?
What questions do I still have? Reflection doesn't mean you have all the answers. It's okay to be left with questions. Those questions can guide future learning.
By taking time to reflect, you move information from short-term memory to long-term understanding. You connect new ideas to your own experiences and values. This turns knowledge into wisdom. It helps you grow not just as a student, but as a person who interacts with the world's many written and unwritten rules.

My Unit 5 Reflection Journal
Date: June 10th
Topic: My personal growth through learning about rules
What I Learned:
I used to think the person who followed every rule perfectly was the "good" one. This unit taught me it's more complex. I learned about the "spirit of the law" versus the "letter of the law." Sometimes, sticking strictly to the words can lead to an unfair outcome. The true purpose of rules is to guide us towards fairness, safety, and respect.
The story about the football player who missed the penalty on purpose was powerful. It showed me that sportsmanship and integrity are values above just winning. Winning without them feels empty.
How I Have Changed:
In PE class: Last week, during a relay race, I saw a classmate from the other team drop the baton. My first instinct was to keep running and win. But I remembered this unit. I paused for a second to let them pick it up fairly. We still lost the race, but I felt good about it.
In group work: I now listen more to why someone might want to do things differently, even if there's a "standard way" (a rule). I try to find a solution that feels fair to everyone.
My Goal:
My goal is to not just be a rule-follower, but a thoughtful rule-user and rule-advocate. If I see a rule that causes more harm than good, I want to have the courage and skills to suggest a change politely, like we practiced in class.
This unit didn't just teach me about rules in games; it taught me about rules for life.
1. What two concepts about rules did the writer learn?
2. What did the story about the football player teach the writer?
3. What did the writer do differently in a recent PE class?
4. How has the writer's behavior changed in group work?
5. What does the writer want to be, not just a rule-follower?
